This is a story about a Baker, and the Bikers who wanted to buy his Bunker. Let's explore the mysteries of the Diefenbunker.
Credits music is "Don't Look for me Now" by Neha Sin. (open.spotify.com/artist/0J5KI...)
Many thanks to the Diefenbunker staff who let us film there instead of telling us to leave.
Other songs used are (in order): Long Road, Absolutely Nothing, Stranger Danger, and Empire Seasons from the KZbin Audio Library.

Howdy everyone, thanks for watching. This was an in-between project I came up with in late 2019, and had to delay for...obvious reasons. Moving forward you can expect maybe one or two short casual videos without a ton of fancy animation to tide things over until my next big 3-part doc. That monster project is well underway and I'm very excited about it. It's longer than Schön...by a significant margin. This month has been a pretty exciting one, I've been doing KZbin for 7-8ish years now and yet I've doubled my subscriber count just in January 2022 alone. I am extremely grateful and all I ask is that you be patient, learning Blender on the fly is difficult lmao

I don't think you need to split it into three parts next time. Mega length videos do quite well nowadays! Dan Olson's video "The Problem with NFTs" as well as Quinton Reviews' "The Failure of Victorious" are two examples of recent monster length videos that I love.
@BobbyBroccoli

That is true! But for me I need that breather in between videos. They are quite effort intensive. But also, I've specifically written the story to be paced in 3 parts. At least for the next project 3-parts is ideal

The verified fact is that the former owner of the bunker *claims* that the Hells Angels offered to buy the bunker for a huge sum of money. He then used that claim to scare the government to buy it back for almost as much. Perhaps that claim deserves some scepticism.

that seems like too much of a conspiracy to me, the owner could probably have offered prof that Hells Angels were interested in it, and I find it hard the government would have not even asked for that when we are talking about a million-dollar purchase

@@yurineri2227 We are talking about the same government that made these nearly pointless bunkers in the first place, right? There was no "proof" mentioned in any of the news reports. If he had "proof" he'd go to the government; instead he went to the media and instigated a FUD based panic buy back. There is no "conspiracy" when only one person is in on it; that is just a scam.

In late 90s and due to disarmament talks ( START & START II ) US government made several nuclear silo sites redundant and subsequently sold off these properties. I dont know what would have made this specific sale so much different? If the government did buy back this bunker, there must be more to the story than Hells Angels trying to buy a building ( after all it is still just a building albeit it having the building underground rather than up above ground ) .

Imagine wasting millions of dollars to... demolish a bunker that could've been repurposed into something useful. If they really didn't want the hells angels to own it, they could've just refused to sell it to them, or rezone it to be a commercial operation, or many many other options besides paying to destroy history.

Fun fact there's a Diefenbunker in my hometown in BC! When I was an undergrad I was told it was constructed because Diefenbaker was pals with a local official (can't recall who, probably the mayor) and would visit regularly... except if you google it, they started to build building the bunker is underneath before Diefenbaker was elected which raises the question of who came first: the diefenbunker or the diefenbaker. Just goes to show how cold war secrecy can generate generations of rumors!

The Bunkers were never built to take a direct hit. In the old days, Soviet guidance systems were poor and likely unable to target a Bunker and hit it. They could survive reasonable near-misses and protect against fallout. I've worked at several of these bunker installations including CARP from the '70s to the late '80s. Great video BTW.

I grew up near Red Deer and when I saw this title I was like, yeah that doesn't sound far off (love that it was in my backyard haha). Honestly the Hells Angels were a pretty normal part of life in the area, I can't say I ever met a member but you'd see them on the highways and stuff. The town I lived in was a favourite vacation site for them and you could often tell when they were in town because there were helicopters circling. Also side note but apparently there was another bunker for government officials under my old college which was also in the Red Deer area. I heard rumors that they used it for student housing at one point but I'm not sure about that one...
