A lot of western Dragon Ball fans don't realize just how influential Akira Toriyama's first successful manga, Dr. Slump was throughout Asia. Not only was Jackie Chan a fan, but without Jackie Chan's films, Dragon Ball wouldn't even exist.

Might even rewatch this on Netflix this weekend in honor of Akira Toriyama. I used to translate for Jackie Chan and i learned how to read chinese thru reading dragon ball. So its like a full circle. And just to be more specific, i translated the audio commentary on the Hong Kong dvd release of "The Myth" and "Rob-B-Hood". Got the gig with Jackie's full approval after i offered to help out on The Myth for free.

If you look at Akira Toriyama's 'prototype' for Dragon Ball which is the two chapter manga Dragon Boy that was published a year earlier, the main character look a lot like kid Goku with Jacky Chan's hair. Which means that indirectly Goku was actually inspired by Jacky Chan. So yeah, these two guys were fans of each other.

I remember catching this sequence on HBO or somewhere when I was a pre-teen on vacation somewhere in South Carolina I think, not knowing who Arale was, and barely knowing who Jackie Chan was at the time... must have been around 1994. I had the same thought until I rediscovered it again on DVD after buying a ton of Hong Kong films around 2007. At that point I was more familiar with Dr. Slump since I had been living in Japan since 2005... but it's a shame that so many people in the West have no exposure to Toriyama's earlier work (or some of Jackie's non-Hollywood films).

There are some blu-ray releases of it here in Asia (I'm in Japan), so this is taken from a rip of one of those. I'm pretty sure you can get it in North America & UK these days in better quality too... especially with Arrow Video, 88 Films, Shout Factory and even Criterion Collection putting out so many great hong kong film blu-ray releases these past couple years.

i think jackei chans influence is overrated in the case of tpriyamas work. bruce lee comes first, then the shaw brothers, after that jackie chan cuz he wasnt well known until mid-to-late 70s

Jackie Chan was absolutely HUGE in Japan during the late 70's and 80's - which was exactly when Toriyama was creating Dragon Ball. I definitely do see some Shaw Brothers influence as well, but he's stated publicly that he was a big fan of Jackie Chan films. I see absolutely no influence from Bruce Lee in Toriyama's work. He's all about gags and comedy mixed with his action, just like Jackie.

​@@TOKYOTOYBANZAI incorrect. its very well known that the name dragon ball came partly from enter the dragon - a 1973 bruce lee film. also, bruce lee appears as a kickboxer in the budokai episodes, vs goku and krilin in separate matches. toriyama more than once mentioned bruce lee in interviews regarding inspiration for dragon ball throughout the series. dont forget that toriyama was born in 1955. bruce was at his peak in the early 70s (toriyama was around 18). when it comes to the first major kung fu movie influence, its definitely bruce lee first. jackie chan wasnt well known until mid to late 70s with the drunken master as a frontman.

Of course he was a fan of Bruce Lee as well, anyone into Hong Kong cinema was. But Jackie's movies made more of a stylistic impact on Toriyama's work. Again, it all comes down to the style of Jackie's movies - which are much more comedic, adventure filled, and training-sequence heavy. Toriyama directly references Drunken Master as his inspiration for Dragon Ball training scenes. I understand that Bruce Lee made the biggest impact on Hong Kong cinema internationally back in the 60's & 70's - but it was the Jackie Chan era of films and birth of and release of those on home video (VHS) in the early-mid 80's that influenced Toriyama the most while he was creating Dragon Ball. It's not even an argument. It's a fact.

I based those off of Bruce Lee." also, dragon ball z's fights are extremely fast. jackie chans fights are never about speed or straight-to-the-point hits, bruce lee's is.
