The players didn't put the jerseys down on Devine's desk, but a couple of players did go into Devine's office and requested that Rudy suit up. Apparently, Devine wasn't resistant, but embraced the idea as well as one of the assistant's in the room. There were people in the crowd supposedly chanting Rudy, but it wasn't the entire stadium, and he did make the sack and they did carry him off the field. I believe Joe Cool. Montana has no reason to hype the Rudy story or to disparage it. All Joe did is give everyone a little reality check. and remind everyone that as always with sports movies there is a handful of script doctors punching up the script in order to make it as feel good as a feel good film could be to maximize box office success over the Christmas holidays. Mission accomplished, and Rudy should just be happy that he is a small footnote in a storied football team's long history.

@jamesmckenzie7049 I have seen other videos of Notre Dame players from that team speaking about the Rudy movie. According to them, only half of the things that appeared in the movie were actually true. I can't blame Joe at all as long as he's telling the truth. Yes, Rudy they say he worked hard just like many other players. He got into the game on the last play and got the sack and they carried him off the field. Hollywood's portrayal of Rudy as a hero is not true. According to his teammates, the crowd did not chant his name and nobody gave him their jersey. It did not appear real to me as I watched that film as Hollywood movies based on a real story are often only half true.

@jamesmckenzie7049 I'm not sure what tone or content we would expect. For my part, Montana simply said what I've known from many other sources. What isn't being said here is that the depiction of players laying their jerseys on Devine's desk because Rudy didn't get scheduled, then the crowd shame-chanting a reluctant Devine into letting him play, well, that's the REAL mean spirited thing. None of that is accurate, and Devine (RIP) felt betrayed by the film for having painted him that way. He always backed Rudy, and never wavered, and that's a fact. I'd be more inclined to wink at the inaccuracies if they didn't smear a true ND legend in the process--Dan Devine.

Let me fill in some other details for you......Michael Ohr from the movie "Blindside" Didn't just start playing football in high school, Pitcher Jim Morris from the movie "The Rookie" didn't just walk in to an open pitching practice, or throw a ball past a highway speed sign. Vince Pappale from the movie "Invincible" only recorded 9 reception yards in two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also wasn't a walk on, he was invited. And last but not least folks.....Rubin "Hurricane" Carter did actually murder 3 people in a bar. A simple google search will confirm all these facts. Like every single biographical movie takes creative license for dramatic effect. Joe didn't have to be a dick about it. It made it worse because the media took his quote out of context, to remove all things complimentary and still do to this day, to make it sound even more dickish than it was. But Rudy getting where he got from where he was and Joe getting where he got from where he was are both incredible stories even without the dramatic license. Joe was such a snob about it though. The biggest "Hollywood Treatment" in the movie Rudy was not what was embellished but what was left out. OK, Great movie, insprational story about persevering and continuing to follow your dream against insurmountable odds. But, movie added things that just weren't true. As a 1977 Notre Dame grad, I was not only at the 1975 game but on campus 4 years living the Notre Dame experience. OK.... What was left out was that although he was undersized and lacking major college talent, Rudy was a 27 year old man in that 1975 game. He was born in 1948 and joined the Navy and worked in a powerplant years before Holy Cross JC then Notre Dame. The movie would lose some of its message if Rudy was shown as a mature man instead of naive kid as effectively portrayed by Sean Astin. Hollywood juggling the facts and outright eliminating a crucial one.

Nah, he’s just telling the truth. Hollywood will elaborate and lie to spin a hero. There’s already enough fakeness going around, why are you blaming Joe as a narcissist for calling out movie producers?

BOO HOO (*SNIFFLE, SNIFFLE)! Of all the storylines dyslexia (RUDY), doesn't compare to autism (RAIN MAN)! Many people with dyslexia go on to live a great life, just like people with color blindness, or many other deformities! Hard to top autism unless coupled with other afflictions! Joe Montana doesn't SUGAR-COAT!! Neither should anyone!

It was a movie, not a documentary. Brians Song also had some liberties. When Joe reflects on the truth it might hurt. Get over it. Still a great story that is somewhat true. What us true is that Rudy got a sack and has the highest sack per play average in ncaa history

Rudy seems not to be a likable guy who if full of himself & embellished his story to make himself look good. I’m sure 95% of the movie was made up which led to an inspirational & successful movie

Hollywood makes me sick! They will do ANTHING the have to to make a story more exciting including lying and making up false situations in order to “sell more tickets”! I don’t know about you but, I feel as though they have NO RESPECT for the general public and have to lie in order to make more money! Hearing how they embellished the movie “The Blind Side” really pisses me off! If a story isn’t good enough to STAND ON IT’S OWN MERITS, then don’t tell the story or make the movie! It’s called HONESTY Hollywood!

No class from Joe. So sad he’s just bitter because he’s not the greatest QB. Lighten up Joe it’s a game you weren’t that great.

Spoken to a numerous example of players during the 70’s-90’s…. Little Joe was always looking for recognition. A “works hard” normal showed him up during a national match… One has been three times accused of sexual assault. One quietly relives their moment in history….. I wonder who is the most noble…….

How could’ve stayed silent on this shit 🤣 for one it’s a movie of course they’re gonna make it more theatrical fuck Joe

Im pretty sure most people already knew that stuff even before Joe said it. Cuz it had been talked about by other players before that. But still, Joe is a dick lol. Rudy is the man

It's a movie. Of course they are going to embellish some things. Rudy still worked his butt off for the team, but it'd be a pretty boring movie if it was just him studying and showing up to practice everyday. Even the real Rudy has come out and said the movie embellished facts. It's a fun movie, everyone relax. I don't see why Joe doesn't just show some class and say the same thing. "It's a movie that took some liberties, but Rudy is a great guy and the movie was great." It's really that simple. He seems kind of petty talking about it the way he does.

Maybe you guys live in fantasy and joe lives in reality. Typical media, looking for an angle. Make a living on stirring the pot. If u don’t like the answer, maybe u shud not ask the question.

These commentators wish they could be as committed as Rudy or as gifted as Montana. But they aren’t so they sit and blab all day and stir up controversy.

Rudy, as a movie, was okayish. Watched it once. That was enough.
@basketcas3717 Жыл бұрын
I've read several stories citing montana as being a dick for more than one reason. Obviously, one of those reasons is him trashing the movie Rudy. Yeah, it's Hollywood. we know it's likely exaggerated. That's what they do. When he said the teammates that carried Rudy off the field as a joke instead of celebrating with him was messed up. Especially when another teammate that played with Rudy said that they were genuinely happy for Rudy because he was so excited to play. Idk just that and reading other stories about him is upsetting because you think he'd have more class.
@negtype13 Жыл бұрын
Did you not listen to what he ACTUALLY said?? He clearly stated, "I WON'T say it was a joke but playing around." He also said, "He worked his butt off to get there and do the things he did!" Telling it straight is NOT "trashing/being petty" people. Then again, it's even more perpetuated by the guys here making the same misconception and you'd think THEY'D pay better attention as they have their own show. Talk about over-sensitive.
