I think this moment with Lex comes down to a twisted psychological web of misogyny, elitism, narcissism, fatphobia, and megalomania (spurred to ridiculous levels by his kryptonite serum poisoning). In his mind, us fatties should feel nothing but gratitude at receiving the, to put it delicately, "romantic" attentions of Lex Luthor, the pinnacle of human excellence (in his mind). As fatties, we're expected to be desperate for and grateful of any sexual interest shown us at all. Certainly Lex never doubts that. Loeb can't write. Let him rehash old stories, retell stories that have already been told and he does okay repeating them. That's why Long Halloween worked so well, It was basically just Batman giving you a tour of his world, introducing readers to his rogues, with the "mystery" of Holiday stappled on to it. Or how Superman for All Seasons was a rehash of Byrne's Man of Steel. But when he tried to create his OWN stories, that's when you notice he has no clue what he's doing, and characters start acting very out of character. I mostly avoid anything that Loeb writes because of that.
@BrandonVout Жыл бұрын
@@somethingclever4297 'Ultimates 3' and 'Ultimatum' are the most infamous examples. Both missed the point of the previous series, focused on shock value over substance, and the latter did irreparable damage to Marvel's Ultimate Universe as a whole (admittedly, it was supposed to lead to a reboot but that was scrapped at the last minute, leaving many characters being gruesomely killed off for nothing). Before his son's death, his "bad" stories were more divisive than universally hated. I'd say his Supergirl stories in Superman/Batman encapsulate what I mean by that. They're fine stories but have some uncomfortable elements (that would haunt Post-Crisis Kara for years after he left) that, once removed, lead to a great adaptation mentioned in the video.

My initial reaction was there isn't much to say because DC abandoned her only a few months after creating her to be the new Supergirl, with only a couple appearances since. Then again, Sasha has made much more out of much less. Cir-El existed in that weird, post-'Many Happy Returns' period where they had just retired Linda Danvers and realized there was a strong desire amongst readers to see Kara come back. They took that information and tried one final time to create another non-Kryptonian Supergirl (this was at least attempt number 4 if you count the Superman/Predator crossover that built up a non-Kryptonian Kara but went nowhere). DC attempts to replace Kara deserve their own series.

Luthor using the Presidency as the ultimate attack and defense method is genius. Superman would never willingly attack the President, he'd lose forever if he did so. Luthor should have been President in BvS. Waller is such a strong character. Having a government agent trying to overlord the super humans is just a logical thing to do. Waller is also a great foil to superheroes by being authoritarian. Why do I like the ship Luthor/Waller? It really doesn't need to happen, but maybe explored a bit.

Wow, never thought I'd ever feel sorry for Waller. If that was anyone other than the US President doing that, she'd have three Suicide Squads out to kill them in minutes.

* I loved the "Future Superman" issue. I totally forgot it was from this first arc. * This scene works a lot better in the adaptation. * I love that you've covered a few adaptations now. Even if only certain aspects. I hope that you continue to cover more of the movies and such going forward.

Would love to see more of a deep dive into Lex's time as President! Unfortunately, Jeph Loeb was given the task of ending the storyline, and botched it in predictably hammy manner. Given that Lex was an evil President and Superman is, y'know...*a reporter*, how much more satisfying would it have been if it were the words of Clark Kent that did what the fists of Superman couldn't? Hell, have him work with Lois on an expose, so that "Lane & Kent" become the DC equivalent of "Woodward and Bernstein"! Of course, this is a comic book, but they could still have had Luthor throw on the mech suit and Supes get all punchy AFTER he's impeached/resigns...smh at the wasted opportunities...

Superman was losing his powers, and having therapy sessions with I-Ching to figure out why. There's a scene where he comes upon a burning tenement. He's walking because he can't fly any more. The fireman sees him and says,"Thank God you're here, Superman! The whole building is about to go up in flames!" Superman runs in without hesitation, even though he has almost no powers left. The thought balloons reveal he's thinking about how he could die right there, but he runs in anyway. There's a full page panel with him running out with a woman under one arm and her two children under the other. He's covered in those awesome Curt Swan bruises. That's the moment I realized who Superman really was beneath the powers and the costume. The only thing is... that page I'm referencing doesn't exist. I built it out of my childhood memories; assembled from various illustrations in the comic itself. It's in my mind as clear as day though as a prisitine artifact of my imagination, my younger self. When I finally found the comic, decades into my adulthood, I was flabbergasted that the page didn't exist. The story is in Superman #240.

I love your organization and structured analysis of this topic. I definitely agree with you that these Superman/Batman stories were a series of fun arcs that worked to capture the dynamic of the World's Finest as their relationship had been depicted over the years. It showed how close they were while still having some differing views on crime fighting and served to compare and contrast these iconic characters rather than just putting them in one extreme or the other (which most writers in previous eras tended to do): they always admired one another or they were ready to kill each other. I think comics up until this period definitely worked to incorporate sensational moments because it was just a compelling visual to insert into a panel while telling a story. It was like the way splash pages were more prolific before the rise of web comics and having to consider the constraints of the online platform when viewing comics. The comic book format just naturally lends itself to quick moments of shock to elicit a reaction or emotion from the reader without bothering to dig deeper into how that moment contributed to the overall plot.
