The thing about Lucy and Desi was, they made history together, and they lived to work. Like most professionals and groundbreakers, that’s hard to give up, especially as you age, because you feel there’s nothing left if you can’t work. But all hail Lucy and Desi. They created an empire, and the world is a better place for it.

Lucie Arnaz blamed the lowering of her mother's voice to the high pitch Lucille used as Lucy Ricardo. It's also interesting to note that Lucille and Vivian Vance were offered the roles of Mame Dennis and Vera Charles when Rosalind Russell left the straight version on the show to do the movie. They turned the offer down which in my opinion would have been the perfect time for Lucy to have played Mame.

It is the standard received judgement that Lucy is abominable in Mame. I had seen the movie once, upon release (I was a teenage Lucy fan) and originally agreed with this opinion. I avoided re-watching it ever since. But recently I viewed it again, and now I believe Lucy’s performance is due for a re-assessment. Toward something more positive. She makes rather interesting choices. She’s a sophisticated Mame. There are clever line readings and witty “takes”, especially in the scenes with the Upsons. She’s a pro who certainly did not deserve the pile-on of cruel reviews in 1974.

Lucy was terribly miscast. She in fact miscast herself. She’d seen Angela’s stage performance and bought the rights to the film version of the movie musical with CBS. Then sat in it for 8 years. George Cukor was meant to direct and may have done great things but had to back out after Lucy’s skiing accident. The whole thing is Lucille Ball-sey indeed. She was just too old and after 27 years playing “herself” on television her MAME just didn’t play. Rosalind Russell created the role in the play and her subsequent film was stellar. Angela created the musical role with Gerry Herman who wrote the lyrics for and around her voice. This video is a great delve into Lucy’s persona. 👍🏻🔔Sunscribed!

This is a very good mini-documentary. But let's be fair. Lucille Ball was handicapped by more than a broken leg; Paul Zindel's terrible screenplay for "Mame" did the property no favors. And if Lucy hadn't broken her leg, she'd have danced up a storm. The voice? Okay, but she was on TV every week so everybody knew what she sounded like. And Rosalind Russell's close-ups in "Auntie Mame," which Pauline Kael also hated (calling it "grisly" and "self-congratulatory"), aren't exactly in razor-sharp focus, either. Even Marilyn Monroe was getting gauze in her last films. People forget, or don't know, how widely anticipated this movie was. Everybody loved the idea of Lucy as Mame (except original Broadway star Angela Lansbury) at the beginning, and the film broke box office records in its first weeks until the reviews and bad word of mouth ultimately killed it. It's actually more interesting as a cinematic train wreck; it could have lapsed into a more efficient mediocrity, and critics weren't likely to be kind to a glamorous musical in the realism-oriented '70s anyway. That caftan Lucille Ball wears in the "Here's Lucy" episode plugging the movie makes her look huge.

Everything Lucy did was pure honey to me. I lap it up! (Even with the gravely voice.) I enjoyed Mame, but Auntie Mame was so flawless that the musical couldn’t quite compete. Rosalind Ross- talk about a star. Loving you highlighting tough, old broads! My favorite archetype!

In her early movie career, Lucy could be a fine actress in a variety of roles. It's too bad she turned into a fossil and parody of herself toward the end (that's a risk of becoming a legend). Not even Stone Pillow could turn things around. I sure wish Angela Lansbury had done the movie version of Mame.

I left a comment about “Mame” on your “Life with Lucy” video without checking that you covered it here, I apologize for that. I should have been aware that someone with your knowledge and likely mutual affection for Bea Arthur wouldn’t leave out this unfortunate film. Btw, Doris Day had a similar doppelgänger storyline on her always format changing sitcom “The Doris Day Show”.

It did really looks like Warner Bros chose her to play MAME, because of her general popularity. After being caught up in the business of creating this movie, having her singing voice dubbed would have eliminated Academy Award possibilities, so I tend to believe that possibility was pressure to do her own singing..........As I've seen it written, "proving once and for all, that she shouldn't have". Who knows how good a movie shall be, before it's made? Although I'm a major fan of Lucille Ball, I seldom view MAME and like to ignore it. She looked great & I even adore some of the "ugly" photos claimed to make her look bad. Your video made me realize she was the same age I am now & it certainly takes special effort for a person to look their best with age. Having loved YOURS, MINE AND OURS so much, MAME was a major disappointment to me. She promoted it as a "family picture" & being a very nave kid, I found it to be adult enough to embarrass me while next to my folks (who I persuaded to bring me). I remember going along with the HERE'S LUCY episode, as that show had become a pleasant habit. . The MAME letdown brought out my 14 year old sympathy for Ball and coaxed her in to writing me one of the most endearing letters. I had carved & mailed her an Academy Award in shop class that seemed to touch her heart.

What a cruel and often incorrect documentary. Let's start with her aged appearance: She spent 23 years under heavy make up and hot studio lights prior to doing Mame. She also did most of her own stunts throughout her entire career often getting injured but "the show went on". She didn't get plastic surgery and continuous nips and tucks. Her singing: A couple of songs weren't that bad but I agree that dubbing would have helped in the overall picture. Physical ability: Only the opening number " It's Today" did her dancing look awkward i.e. being lifted up and carried down a lengthy hallway Acting: There was no Lucy Ricardo, Carmichael, or Carter in her performance, SHE WAS MAME ! As for Angela Lansbury not getting the role: Numerous Broadway shows replaced the lead(s) when the movie version came out. Often because if you had seen the stage production what is the point of seeing the same cast on film? Instead of pointing out the great parts of her performance, it's become the "in thing" to ridicule her and don't forget to drag her personal life in with an extra large helping of Tabloid Trash.

Thank you for your comment. The video is not necessarily a condemnation of her career, nor her performance in Mame. I address flaws in her performance as they are directly referenced in reviews or addressed in the corresponding Here's Lucy episode. I adore Ball with my whole heart so reading such awful things written about her at the time is heartbreaking. I do refer to her dancing in the "Mame" musical number as joyous, and it makes me smile.

Why do gay men (I'm one, btw) put the strangest things in quotes. "The show went on," "in thing." I see this all the time on boards. It's no big deal, but I'm curious. Nobody else does it.
@Alan-yn9fk

@@akrenwinkle A gay thing? When quoting titles, expressions or other phrases from what the lingo was at the time, you use quotation marks so as not to confuse it with today's terminology. I also remember when the term gay meant happy. Are you? I don't share your lifestyle nor do I condemn it. But please don't turn the use of proper english and grammar into a gay issue. Just for you I didn't use any quotation marks.

@@Alan-yn9fk Putting "random" words in "quotes" does not qualify as "proper" English. Nobody else does that on these "boards" except gay men like us, but I "resist" it. How do I know about you? The point of using a performer in a movie version of a stage production where they originated the role is for two reasons. (A) Not everyone in the world can have the opportunity see a Broadway show, unless they live in or near NYC or visit NYC and are able to get tickets, and that is just a small minority of the people who live in the US and other parts of the world. (B) Having the performer who originates the role on Broadway creates a permanent record of their performance, allowing those who were not able to see the stage version enjoy the original performance, as well as for future generations to come. There have been many movies based on Broadway shows where original cast members are used, Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand, How To Succeed in Business with Robert Morse and the non-musical version of Mame with Rosalind Russell, to name a few, all of which had outstanding performances. Would you want to see a movie version of Funny Girl with Ruth Buzzi as Fanny Brice? Angela Lansbury won a Tony award for her performance in Mame, she had made a lot of movies prior to Mame and became a beloved icon after making more movies, her TV show and working with Disney. It would be amazing to be able to see her performance as Mame captured on film, and if Lucy had been smarter and not so egocentric, she would have cast Angela Lansbury in the movie version, since she had bought the rights.
