The thicc slithery boi on the ground is a cottonmouth, venomous but not particularly aggressive. The tree boi is a rat snake, non-venmous.

As a Bentonville resident, I'm trying to get better at IDing cottonmouths as you can't always see their face stripe. The posturing helps but can be faked. Any other clues?

That was a Northern Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) on the ground and a Western Ratsnake (Pantherophis obsoletus) in the tree. Despite the Cottonmouth being venomous it wants nothing to do with you, and they are very calm snakes. Not something to worry about at all if you aren't messing with it.

Snakes, they're out and about! It's Springtime in the Napa Valley, I rode Moore Creek one day and Skyline the next and saw rattlesnakes in the trail both days. Got a bonus at Moore Creek when a large male coyote crossed right in front of me on the way back to the van. I agree with Sara, the first snake you see it takes a moment before you realize what it is that you're seeing then, after that, everything looks like a snake!

I know the type of trails you like to ride Brian. If you did not get the chance to go to Devil's Den to ride the new trails while you were here, then that's a flat out shame, because I think you would have loved them. Combination of flow, amazing scenery, some optional tech lines, but no real jumps or anything like that minus one or two, and some rollers you can launch off of. The rock work...is absolutely INSANELY beautiful there, and it WILL be a go to "can't miss" destination for people traveling here, with it only an hour from Bentonville. People are going to be BLOWN AWAY by that trail.

I'm going to guess that the snake in the tree was a King Snake, and that it had likely had an encounter with that Cottonmouth. King Snakes will squeeze venomous snakes and kill them, which might also explain why that Cottonmouth wasn't moving much. It could have also been that it was cold, and it had just come out for some sun to warm up (they're cold blooded), but that was an ODD place for a Cottonmouth. They are usually VERY near water, and that was well up above the creek. If anything, I would have expected there to be a Copperhead where the Cottonmouth was located. That was weird.
