It's easy to figure out bucket angle when you use a shovel before a bucket

That's why I stand by the statement that you need to spend the first part of your career on the end of a shovel. You pick up a lot of valuable knowledge when working that shovel.

I agree with your sentiment that everyone should start out in the ditch before they start running the machines, but based on the lack of logic in your "High Horsey" statement, the amount of time you've actually spent on a shovel seems to be questionable. As means of qualifying myself as an expert ditch troll, I'd like to point out, as an investment in my personal work tools, I was the only guy on any site that owned their own shovel. Everyone else (most guys were a fair bit smaller than me) just grabbed whatever was close by and started digging. I had to have a custom made, extra heavy duty spade shovel designed for a guy my size because I always had take it easy on regular spades so that I didn't break the handles all the time and it really slowed me down. So those of us with actual real "Goon Spoon" hours know that a shovel digs completely differently than a hoe bucket. Shovels are stomped into the ground at basically 80 degrees to the surface and then levered out of the ground to lift the dirt out. People who try to run an excavator the way a shovel taught them to dig, tend to engage the ground at an 80 degree bucket angle and accomplish very little but burning extra fuel. It's not very often you use a spade shovel to flatten out the bottom of a hole but admittedly the operation both have in common is low angle chipping of the ground, but again, that's not a common or intended use of a spade shovel. The handle angle on a spade shovel is intended for "stomp, pry, throw" use, you have to bend over the whole time to use it to flatten or chisel a flat surface. Just sayin...

@reganmorben9248 while all what you said is true but my time on a shovel I used a box shovel more than a spade for doing fine grade around edges before they put me in the operator's seat

@@FlameofUdun9 I agree all the way around. My rental car got a flat tire and they took it back to the shop and fixed her up for me. Super nice people. It's like being at camp for grown ups. And then there is raising the bear....
