The triceratops and teleporting to the roof is his own magic, he uses his magic to easily incapacitate almost all of the guards, and he drank the fire breathing potion knowing what it was, in the show a lot of it seemed like dumb luck.

@@SoyDrinker They're all way more powerful on the stream at this point. They were more powerful episode one of the stream then the show. When they began the stream they were level 9 adventurers, where in DnD that's some significant power. Campaigns that start at level one usually finish around 10-11 (big generalization) but at around level 7 your starting to feel pretty strong. Also Vox Machina was stacked with magic items that Matt bestowed upon them.

Not exactly how it happened in the game but it perfectly captures how the Scanbo scene was basically Scanlan failing upwards and I just love it. 👌 Made me look at my newly-minted bard character in a whole new light.

Kinda... I like the original better. He didn't succeed by luck, but by being the right amount of cocky, smart and versatile. Also, they nerfed his powers really hard in the animated show, at this point he was a magic powerhouse already.

@@albertchristian1 I dont like it so far tbh. Look at Keyleth - they didnt nerf her at all. Strong area of effect spells, shapeshifting, some off-healer abilities, skywrites, vines, light, she has everything she used. Scanlan literally has illusions and hand, rest is some potions or scrolls. Polymorph isnt his, no healing words, no inspirations, no DD, he didnt show his persuasion skills at all so far. In CR he was in control there, in VM he was lucky to survive. And then next thing is he goes back to being useless due to zombie biting him.

My party stole a cannon from a sewer maze that belongs to a gang that is spread throughout the entire kingdom. Now they’re trying to commission someone to make a cannon cart. They’re level three. It was the second session. The first session all my players were in attendance. I wanted to kill them.

On the way to the manor house one of the players (as a child savant) decides to try and draw a d*ck on the face of one of the others whilst they're asleep. Two nat 20 equivalents later and I have to spend the entire session trying to work out how NPCs too polite/scared to say anything will react to an interrogator with a dong on his face, FML!

i loved how they animated Scanbo, but they did make interesting alterations. Scanlan was inside the house when he drank the potion of fire breathing and that happened first. he defeated Vedmire by "Scanlan's hand" (they can't use the term "Bigby's hand" because Wotc haven't allowed them to use copyright material - yes, i know that's crazy) and lightning bolt, but Bigby's hand didn't force Vedmire off the roof and gently let Scanlan down, providing him with the coolest possible exit. it was awesome and different, but i'm not sure it was as good as the way Sam improvised it. the impact in TLOVM was also slightly diminished by the choice to intercut Scanbo with what the rest of VM were doing in Whitestone, although cinematically that makes perfect sense. part of the joy of Scanbo on stream was how the sequence built with a series of crazy choices and lucky rolls. however i did love how in TLOVM they provided more obvious motivation for Scanlan to attack the house single handed by the other members of VM saying "oh, he's useless, it's far too dangerous for him to provide the distraction alone"

the way the episode is done is also a good buildup for scanlan's arc in the cheoma conclave. he is treated as a joke and even see himself as one but wants to prove himself for both himself and the rest. he even telle vedmire "i know i'm a joke". in critical role sam originally didn't plan for scanlan to be a serious character untill kailee showed up, in the legend of vox machina they very nuch plan on making him a serious character from the start and build on that.

I must say i watched the entirety of the Legends of Vox machine season 1 and its a real masterpiece. Its probably one of the best if not the best animated series I've ever seen, the high's the lows, the banter in between and filled with captivating action and excellent story. The hilarious nat 1 leading to splendid moments such as having them talk about cursed doors etc. I really loved it.

This was likely a deliberate choice from Sam himself since he always played Scanlan as a "failing upward" kinda character. Since he was specifically a player in this instance, he was probably making the moment more badass than his character would've had. Essentially, *Sam* was the one being badass while *Scanlan* likely was going by the seat of his pants. It's an interesting translation between D&D session to scripted show that we've never really seen before.

It's kind of a reversal of the more common situation where a player is in over their head, not being able to think and act as clearly and decisively as their character would in some situations, because it is hard to play someone more intelligent, trained and perceptive than oneself without a script.

You don’t get to be compared to Rambo when your success was 95% fluke. The reality of the situation is scanlan in the campaign was rolling with his own skillset, with powerful spells he had used many times. At any moment he could dimension door to guaranteed safety, but he stayed the course until the mission was done, pulling out all the stops to do so, hence the naming of the scene. That may be “by the seat of the pants” to some degree - in Sam’s perception or anyone else’s but it’s a fundamentally different scenario than the raid in the show. Sure it was a zany sequence of events in the campaign, but I have problems with the scene’s setup being so cockamamie when it didn’t really need to be even with Scanlan’s lesser power level.

another thing to mention is that this is the early campaign 1, as in they had just come from years playing pathfinder and were figuring out 5e. Sam chose to play a bard because Liam told him it was "the worst class", which anyone who plays d&d can tell you is not remotely true for its version of the bard class. the power jump was a pretty surprise for them all

It's definitely a big moment, absolutely top 3, but he has plenty of more time to shine. ...well, depends on how they adapt the CC and Big V. If they try to cram all of CC into one season, it'll definitely suffer. And his biggest moment might not even come up if they cut TD in his entirety.

No way. Sam was flying by the seat of his pants when they played all those years ago. He had no plan, just clever spells at opportunistic moments and some convenient potions. That’s what made it awesome at the time: no plan, no strategy, no backup, just a smart-ass gnome who gave zero fucks and managed to get extremely lucky

One of my favorite subtle things about the animated series version is Scanlan seeing the triceratops head in the Duke's trophy room before polymorphing into one. The clip didn't show this, but I remember Matt and Sam discussing whether Scanlan would have ever seen a triceratops before (because he wouldn't have been able to turn into one if he hadn't) in the stream (Matt was a lot harder on metagaming back then)
