Hey Yuta! Question, you listed insults and I noticed you used the word baka. However, I'm curious about the difference in implication between baka and aho. From what I understand, baka is just calling someone stupid/idiot and aho seems to be similar to using "retard"? Maybe you could make a video explaining that and some other words with similar meanings? Great video though! Loved the correct usage of the fuck word. :)

It's done in some languages with tone of voice and some politeness increasing words. I'm sure you've heard someone say, in a cheery voice, "Would you kindly go fuck yourself, please?" It's not actually polite, but it's a lot more polite than saying "go fuck yourself" and I think the effect is the same in Japanese

I mean " you a bad bitch" isn't mean but "you a bitch" is mean. Kinda the same thing like "you the shit" is not mean but "you are shit" is mean and grammy and tone is very important, like i mention in the shit sentences one word can change the meaning.

Politely swearing is something in all languages. You can diss someone insanely without ever actually using any harsh words depending on how you construct your sentence+the context. If you are speaking to someone of authority very casually and in a dismissive tone intentionally, that’s incredibly insulting even if you never say anything substantially mean.

In English it's also possible to swear politely with no swear words, as well as use swear words in polite context. It all comes down to the fact that Japanese people aren't as tough as Westerners or even Russians, who use words like "hui", "pizda", "yebat" or "blyat" all the time. I called a Japanese woman "bakayaro" once, she got literally heart-wounded, only by hearing that word, and now, she doesn't even accept my apologies for calling her so. You can call a woman in Japanese as 「整理付き」and in English as "period spitter", which would in both cases not be derived from foul language, but be offensive to women nontheless.

Swearwords reflect cultural taboo's. Probably why there are so many sexual swearwords in English is the historical influence of christianity. I think its the same with most European cultures.

@ArdanArianis

I don't think that it is a product of Christianity, but more of a result of Victorian mores. In the Middle Ages, where religion and politics were intertwined, they would use lots of sexual and crassy words without any problem. Swearwords were in fact associated with religious profanity, as using God's name in a disrespectful manner (like, "I swear upon God's cunt that..."). Shadiversity made an excelent video talking about swearing in medieval Europe (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXLWqqx4priEac0).

'Fuck' in particular is offensive because it originally referred to violent rape, or raping a woman for the purpose of causing damage/attacking her. It was viewed as the lowest, most offensive act, because this form of rape was not to satisfy an urge, or to procreate, but purely to cause the deepest damage possible to a woman. And honestly, knowing the actual meaning, I'm shocked that people are so casual about using it today. Worthless society we have nowadays.
@cedar5616

@@jerotoro2021 "Fuck" DOESN'T mean that anymore, though, so what exactly is the problem? This is a false equivalence. If I found out tomorrow, for example, that the English word "and" has its roots in genocide, that wouldn't make me think the use of "and" reflects a moral failing of people today.

in German the relationship to swear words changes a lot from region to region. I'm from Vienna and nobody will take you seriously if you don't think of some creative swear words. When you just spout the standard "Scheiss", "Shit", "Gefickt" people won't think too much of it and forget all about it the next day. If you wanna leave an impression you gotta "Herst G'schissena dane Muda hot bei mia den Klodeckel unten g'lassen" I think people will remember that ;D Also you gotta end every sentence with "Oida" ^^

Quite interesting as always. In Bulgarian the word baba (with a shorter "a" at the end) means old woman or grandmother and it is not offensive at all. People would call their grandmother baba. Also I like that there are some similarities between Bulgarian and Japanese like we also rarely use "you" in our sentences. In Bulgarian you don't need to have a subject in your sentence. In English you have to say "It is raining", whereas in Bulgarian the correct way of saying the same thing would be just "Raining". In a lot of cases saying "you" can sound like you are singling out the person or are being more aggressive. Although it is not considered rude or offensive. We also have a normal and polite way of speaking although it is not as intense as in Japanese. The Bulgarian polite speak usually involves just using the plural form of "you" instead of the single. So you speak to a single person but you address them as though you were speaking to multiple people. It is usually used when speaking to your boss, teacher, doctor or just a stranger / person that you don't really know yet. Sometimes people ask each other if it is ok to speak "in you" (meaning the single form of you). So they are asking if they can drop the polite speak and talk normally. A very interesting topic I think.
@Mathias-bz2kr
@Mathias-bz2kr 3 жыл бұрын
In Danish, in theory, we use plural form as a polite way to adress someone. "de" stead of "du" But it is only rarely used on paper, and you sound like an oldtimer it isn't used commonly.

@papgaming5091
@papgaming5091 3 жыл бұрын
@@CaramidaDeCasa I see how it can be offensive. In Bulgaria if you call a younger woman baba, it would be like you are calling her old and would be rude. But if the woman (no matter the age) has a grandchild she is technically a grandmother so she is a baba and shouldn't be offended. It depends on the woman though. Some are happy to be called that because they are proud that they have a grandchild and it makes others feel old so they don't like it. If the woman is younger it is usually played as a joke.

I've noticed that in Japanese swearing, there's a lot of stuff going on with insulting comparisons. Unlike in my native language - which is Polish - calling people monkeys or dogs seems to be somehow a viable way of insulting. Also, I haven't seen Japanese insult related to sexual organs. That's so polite... here in The Netherlands we use deceases as curse words a tradition probably derived from Jiddisch due to a large Jewish population in the old days. Jiddisch is one of the few other languages that use deceases as curse words. Wishing each other cancer, typhoid and tuberculosis, etc. or calling each other (parts of) genitalia or racist animal referrals is very popular when it gets heated. On the softer side your got the crazy, ugly, etc. and the nicer animal referrals.
