I had a friend whose father's was a local sheriff and they worked all the concerts, etc. He would have someone meet us at a back door (used for maintenance or whatever) and let us in. No passes, but once we were back stage everything was cool. Everyone just thought we knew someone important. We saw so many bands (like U2, Police, Ramones, etc) from stage side and back stage. It was a dream at the time..

As someone who works in security, this is not hard to believe. One thing that most people don't realize, is the fine line that security has to walk between using heavy scrutiny, and being careful not to give anyone a hard time who is actually supposed to be there. I know it sounds stupid, but some people will get very personally offended if you even question for a moment whether they should be there or not. For example, making them wait while you obtain further verification. If this person happens to be a powerful person, your ass may be on the line, even though all you were doing was your job. It can be a tough spot to be in, and people who get pissed off and assume that security should automatically know who they are, end up undermining their own security.

I remember this one time I worked security for GDC--huge game development convention. I was guarding something like a side party room that about 200 people were trying to get in. It was was my first time volunteering, and I wasn't all that familiar with the organization. This one guy, I guess a pretty well known guy to everyone there but me, wanted to walk passed me without being on the list. I asked him who he was. He was polite about it, but everyone around me just stared at me like a slow motion car crash, horrified that I didn't know who he was and dared to ask him. I looked at one my co-workers like, "Well?" and no one would say anything. Finally, I just said, "Ok," and let him through. Good thing I did, but still, why even have security if anyone can just say, "Oh, I'm not on the list, but I'm supposed to be here"?
