Super helpful video! Have a tiny project and have a garage full of adhesives, paints, primers and whatnot from my countless other DIY projects, and was really hoping to avoid buying yet another specialty product! 100 % Zinsser BIN Primer Sealer & Stain Killer, shellac base "brush or roller on,",,,, the smell of money " that's what I used to tell my clients back in the day.

I'm a retired painter and I've always used Peel Stop for any paper exposed repair larger than say a thumb print. Always applied it by brush and brushed really well in. It seems to penetrate the paper layers and lock the edges of the repair down. The only problems I ever had were when I didn't use it.

Ive been using wood glue for decades. super cheap. no blistering. Dries fast.

Try having someone who is very new or never done drywall work to the brown paper repairs with each product and see how much fails. If they know nothing, show them how to properly prep it then stand back and just let them do the others and then see what works. Thanks for the videos.

As a retired biologist repairing drywall with very little experience, I am extremely impressed by your instinctive understanding of statistics, in that you don't give in to drawing conclusions about rare events from small sample sizes.

Thank you for putting this together. I just want to acknowledge something that you are doing that is far to rare in the trades. HUMILITY and OBJECTIVITY. I’m all for bravado but fora lot of us, it’s all you got. I see a lot of people in the trades riding one long wave of good luck and they think it’s their superior skill. Never acknowledging that they could do it better, nor are they even remotely curious if they can improve. When they do get called out, they are a blame ninja. What a great example to be setting and living, especially at your experience level.

I've used Tight Bond glue watered down a bit. So far, so good.

I always use either Zinsser Low Odor Primer or Titebond III. Always work.

If you want to spend money, Zinnzer BIN is always the way to go - NEVER FAILS. But I ALWAYS use TiteBond II Wood Glue (blue label). A quick smear with your fingers and you can mud in 15 min later. If you have a lot, do yourself a favor and put on some cheap disposable gloves. You're welcome!

Have you tried the strait-flex perfect 90 for inside corners? Have you tried using it with the 3m 61 adhesive? This works really well for me. Expensive, but it works. I am a diy and do drywall infrequently. I have learned a lot from your channel.

Ive found sanding with a vibrating sander to remove peeling paper, then priming with BRUSHED ON Zinsser BIN shellac or Zinsser oil primer works almost without exception. Cant think of a time this didnt work in 35 years.

Great video. I am finishing my basement and accidently nicked off top white paper on new drywall when installing trim. Most of nicked areas will be hidden by casing ultimately. Would you recommend priming and mudding those spots that show brown paper or would the application of PVA drywall primer be sufficient?

This video is sooo helpful! We recently purchased our home (built in 1954) and I removed wallpaper from the living room. The drywall has darker brown paper, like terra cotta color. Do you know what kind of drywall this could be?

Drywall paper will yellow and turn almost brown overtime if it hasn’t been painted or primed

We finally found out that the walls are actually plaster and before wallpapering (over 25 years ago), looks like they covered the walls with "lining paper" and a layer of some sort of thinned-down "paint/solution" before applying the wallpaper. There are some large open spots of the brown paper (where the thin paint pulled away) that I plan to pretreat (before mudding) as you instructed in your videos. Hoping this will work 🤞 Your videos are the best, I am learning so much!

Approx 15 spots 100% success with oil base kilz original (black can) I believe you have water base there. But this also smells.

I have seen several of your videos on how to fix torn paper on drywall. However, I am working on a older house where the entire drywall paper is brown. They had wall tile and when I pulled it off the original drywall is in perfect condition but it is solid brown and needs the joints taped and bedded. My question is will joint compound stick to this or is there some kind of preparation needed first?

Often old Drywall will turn brown just from aging and if it’s still the outer layer of paper that just has turned brown, you can just finish it like new drywall but it would be best to put a stain blocking primer over it before you do anything

Nothing beats shellac it penetrates the paper extremely well because it's alcohol-based it gets into the pores where other heavier base sealers cannot in a tight area put a fan in the window before you start and you'll hardly smell it plus it dries in 30 minutes and then the smell is gone because it's such a fast drying product when I put on shellac with a Wooster four or six inch mini roller microfiber because the microfiber holds a lot of material and doesn't splatter you can use the roller to push it into the bad spots with ease the roller is very fast versing a brush after the shellac dries in 30 minutes I coat it with the first coat of mud so the smell is gone oh last comment because it is alcohol-based it doesn't lift the paper at all and will penetrate through thin layers even if you don't get a perfect preparation

Just paint the brown paper with white paint. That way you won't have any problem with the brown paper bubbling or peeling because even if it fails, it's white paper that's failing, not brown.

That 3M spray is cyanoacrylate -- isn't that SuperGlue? You rub it around the paper with your fingers...?!?

Yeah I'm old school and I really don't worry about things like getting a little spray adhesive on my fingers so I just rub it in. Then I rub my fingers together afterwards and it comes off so no big deal
