The Spatial Delivery "Sample & Hold" mode re-creates the Oberheim VCF sound which can be heard to great effect on Frank Zappa's "Ship Ahoy", and FZ's solo on "Inca Roads" is maybe the definitive use of an envelope filter. The full Inca Roads solo is from the live album "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 2 - the Helsinki Concert" - an edited version appeared on the studio album "One Size Fits All".

Grateful Dead were the greatest American band! toured for 30 years non stop. wrote hundreds of timeless songs with themes of life, love, everything about the human experience. they are the ultimate melting pot of American genres in one group. Grateful Deads recordings should all be in the Library of Congress. The Jerry Garcia Band shows too. then Jerry died that was the real end of the 60s and true 'Freedom' in the United States. now everyone is living the life of surfs, except our overlords are companies and banking conglomerates.

I love using the Qtron on my bass, but like you mentioned, either the lows are really low or the highs are really high, but you cant move around the neck without losing something. So, I use an overdrive pedal with the gain off for a clean boost.
@AlbertoMartinezDelRio7 жыл бұрын
With te Qtron+ the Boost knob in Normal mode passes input signal through the filter at its original level. Boost mode increases the signal gain to the filter according to the Gain control setting.

Mark Basinski Can’t Believe you mentioned Ship Ahoy!!!! One of all my time favorites since I discovered back when I was 19 yrs old ( now 35 ) I was blown away upon first hearing it. At the time I had no clue how he got that sound. I figured it was some sort of fixed wah pedal through a filter. I have to watch the section of the video where they use the extended step feature on the EQD Spatial Delivery. Awesome comment! I also know FZ used the Roland Space Echo as well as the Son of Kong EQ & Boost and the ever so awesome and gnarly Dan Armstrong Green Ringer. If you have any other knowledge on Frank’s effects I would love to hear about it! Thanks!
@mgbasinski4 жыл бұрын
@@jordandangelo180 Cool! Glad to know there is somebody else out there that digs that amazing solo. There are some You Tube videos out there of Dweezil Zappa talking about his effects rig and also about Frank's, and I apologize, I do'n't recall exactly how to find it, but there was one where Dweezil did talk specifically about the envelope filter gear Frank used for Ship Ahoy (if I recall correctly, back then, it was a bunch of rack mount units)

Great stuff as always! I have one of Mike Beigel’s Tru-Trons as well as an original Mu-Tron III. The Tru is very close sonically to the Mu, in the same way as the Hartman flanger is close to the original Electric Mistress. About 95% there, minus some quirks baked into the particular components available when the originals were made. The Tru lets you split the gain into two parts, letting you drive the preamp into breakup without smashing the filter stage too hard (though you can do that too if you want!). It’s good stuff.

Great show as always. One thing: You missed Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. The MuTron was a key component of his sound. Check out China Cat Sunflower, and Shakedown Street, to name a couple of songs. The MuTron needs a strong signal, which prompted Garcia to invent the on-board effects loop for installation into his guitars. I have an Alembic with that same type of system. One throw of a switch and the guitar signal goes straight to the amp bypassing all the effects. When engaged a full strength signal hits the effects. However the volume knob on the guitar only controls the level hitting the amp and does nothing to the signal hitting the effects. This makes using an envelope filter very consistent. I started with a Boss Auto-Wah, then MuTron, then Q-Tron, then 3Leaf Audio, now a the new Mu-FX Micro-Tron III. The 3Leaf is an excellent pedal that tracks very well. The new Mu-FX nails the Garcia sound, is much smaller than the original, and uses a 9V power supply. Saving up for a G2. Hopefully Christmas. Your virtual battery has made a HUGE difference in my Fulltone Germanium 69 Fuzz from the 90s.

Regarding the absence of Jerry Garcia, as we all know, the dead were a live band, not a studio album band. They toured Europe in the early 70s and then in 1990. That was the last time, so it makes sense that Jerry wasn't on mick and dan's radar. I imagine that back in 1990, mick was playing the solo from forever man over and over again and dan might have been working on the intro to thunderstruck.

The lamp on the Q-tron is supposed to flash to show how much the envelope is filtering, I believe. It's not a warning lamp. Also, the counter-intuitively labeled "Gain" control doesn't really do what you would imagine gain does, unless the "Boost" is on. Otherwise it is actually what would normally be called the "sensitivity" control. ...says the guy commenting on a three year old video. - -;

Dan - I have a question about the Mysterious Ways (U2) filter. I bought an original 90’s era Korg A3 - and The line 6 Helix has an emulation of the Filter from that box. (They call it a mysterious filter). The Reason I’m directing this question at you is to get your opinion of what is scientifically (or mathematically, or electronically...lol) happening with that particular filter. I’ve taken the Helix and the Korg and played with just the filter alone (taking out the delay, verb, phaser and distortion that are in the patch). Have a listen to the song and hear that the filter is immediately spiking and collapsing and then shortly after there’s a low-end whoosh. The best way I could TYPE the sound is “Chow-Wooof” The interesting part is that the “Woof” doesn’t happen unless you hold the note or chord. So you get the classic “chow”-sound if your doing staccato licks, but the moment you hold - the second filter comes in. I think it’s one of the most interesting uses of an envelope filter in a song by far. (Personal opinion of course.). So - the questions - 1.Do you know of any other pedals that behave this way, or is this unique? 2. Can you posture a guess at what’s happening in that sound? I’ve never been able to duplicate it with anything other than the Korg. (Which the Edge famously used the default preset 76 on that unit for that song.) The helix can get close - but you cant control the length of time between Chow and Woosh, so it’s not exact...anyway - wonderful as always.

The Q-tron + doesn’t boost the output if you set it up correctly. Or it can. It’s down to getting the gain and peak set correctly. Yes Mick you should have read the manual. Attempting to demonstrate stuff without bothering to read the manual is not a good thing. And the Q-tron+ was developed mostly by Mike Beigel - who designed the Mutron - and he says he fixed some things in the Mutron he wasn’t happy about.
