I used to play in a band (in my former life as a drummer) with a guy who had a 100 watt Hi Watt. It was magical. Sounded as big as God. Most of the sound guys in the smaller to mid-sized clubs we were playing hated it. We were generally criticized for being entirely too loud (our bass player had the big Ampeg SVT rig with the 8 x 10 cab, a mid-driven turbo rat for his clean tone into a quite-driven Muff for his dirty tone). I'll never forget the tones that guy used to pull out of that Hi Watt, though. Simply astounding.
@mathewrileymusic4 жыл бұрын
how on earth did you play clubs that size with those amps? what were the master volumes on? hahah it seems unthinkable..
@thenotsoguitarguy94294 жыл бұрын
@@mathewrileymusic - our local music scene largely consisted of clubs with ridiculous PA systems for their size and there were no local ordinances in those days to limit the noise floor in the bar district. As long as the sound guys could get the drums and vocals out over the amps without massive feedback issues, nobody really cared how loud it was. That was 15 or more years ago, now, though. I'm sure things have changed since then.

Sergio Rodrigues Bjorn or Mr. Gilmour himself. 🙂 Hey Mick and Dan, why don’t you ask Davey G to come on the show. 😉 As a side note, I think this show goes to show that almost every guitarist wants the same thing: to physically feel the power of a hugely powerful amplifier, be it Marshall, Boogie or Hiwatt - or anything else.

So after watching this I fired up my Hi-Tone (Hiwatt repro) 50 watter, with a Homebrew Germania 44 (OC44 germanium transistor) followed by a Magnetic Solar Bender via a Gibson SG Special. Holy bleepin’ bleep! I had to dial down the master volume a bit to keep the house from shaking, but what a sound! I’d never properly used the Germania in full-range boost/overdrive mode before ‘cuz it always drove amps into sounding overcompressed…but I’d never tried this with the Hi-Tone. No compression this time, just huge and loud. Even with the guitar vols at ~4 there’s a bit of crunch from the pedal along with an almost acoustic hi-fidelity from the guitar. Yow! Kick on the fuzz and the sound thickens and just sings. Turn up the guitar vols and it’s the closest thing to playing at stadium levels that I’ve ever experienced at a non-life-threatening volume. So cool! Thanks, guys, for pushing me to explore the possibilities of my own gear!

I'm wanting either their custom lowatt or the dg 50, do you think with the master volume I can get good overdriven tones without killing my family lol? I'm assuming I'll need some od pedals to make happen but would be nice if just the master volume can allow it.
@davidkieltyka93 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminfowler4513 The Hiwatt preamp circuit will crunch nicely at manageable volume if you turn up the channel volume pot and turn down the master. Try ~3:00 on the channel vol. With either a Lowatt or the Hi-Tone Gilmour you’d need to use an attenuator to run the master vol high enough that the power section compresses some. That’s where the amps really sing. Alternately set the master in the 10:00-11:00 range, if you can, and use a compressor pedal to kinda/sorta emulate the “turned up master” sound. Any medium gain soft clipping dirt pedal oughta be able to do much the same thing.

Mick at 35:34 totally hits the nail on the head, describes exactly my impression of the Colorsound circuit from watching this, and also totally pegs me on not meshing with fuzz/treble boosters as they've been too harsh/gnarly/frizzly compared to mild overdrive. From this video, the Colorsound circuit appeals to me way more than any distortion or fuzz tone I've ever heard. Must try one for myself. Thank you guys! Also, never censor your "lightbulb moments" as we're feeling what you're feeling! Sharing in gear joy is precisely why I watch every TPS even when it's tone and gear that I don't connect with.

Speaking of trying to find a way to use it these days at a lower volume. I see what has been my solution for few months now behind you in the video on your shelf. It’s the Fryette Power Station. I put mine through a Power Station and it helps tremendously to keep my sound at a much lower volume. It may not be completely transparent but I don’t feel I’m not losing much. Ah yes. The one that got away. The first pedal I bought, although it may have been the second, was a Colorsound Overdriver in 1974. Sold it in 1980 because I'd just got a '76 Marshall & thought that I didn't need pedals anymore. D'Oh! I used to run mine into a solid state 30 Watt amp with a 12” speaker, and the crazy volume thing used to happen in spades. Fortunately the amp used to have 4 inputs, so I’d run the guitar straight into one channel, run a cable out of that channel’s second input to Overdriver, then back into the second channel. Then I could get the clean and dirty volumes into the same County.

Hey, fellow TPS fans, this episode --like nearly all of them-- is a much more rewarding experience if you go to the trouble of listening through a nice pair of headphones. Those teeny computer speakers just don't do these tones justice. Also, surely, there must be some rich-arse out there who would be willing to loan these brilliant men a board of Pete Cornish pedals for a few weeks. For all the tens of thousands of gear videos featured on KZbin, there are relatively few that demonstrate ANY Cornish pedals (and desperately few of those have been produced since the early Gearmandude days) and I've not seen any, AT ALL, that truly do the kind of deep-dive exploration that Dan and Mick do on this channel. Come on, our wealthy, altruistic fellow guitar nerds... make with the pedals. :)

To offer a solution to the volume issue, try switching to a less efficient speaker. A 3dB reduction in speaker efficiency will “halve” the power of your amp without changing the headroom of your amp. 6dB will cut it in half again, etc.

The Page Hiwatt mod adds an extra gain stage, from an otherwise unused half of a 12AX7, along with an extra control, named “Balance” for some reason, to dial it in. Zero on the Balance knob is unity gain, and turning it up gradually adds in the extra stage. Kinda like having a bullt-in overdrive pedal. There was a footswitch to toggle it on & off too. BTW I’ve been on Gilmour’s barge too! Family connections. :) Also, the Townshend Hiwatts have a Vox Top Boost-based tone stack. You've just named my two most desired boost/drive pedals. Preparing to sell a bunch of others so I can get the Throbak and the Nobels. I thought about the Wampler Paisley Deluxe but the Nobels pedal they based one side on is not the ODR-1, right? Throbak are the bomb.
@martone68526 жыл бұрын
@@mattgilbert7347 Not sure what the paisley is based on, haven't tried one but it would be hard to beat the odr for rythem sounds. I put a ts9 after it for leads which makes your solo jump right out because the odr boosts the low mids and the ts9 mids are higher. I have the throbak next in the chain, it has less mids than both but seems the most amp like. I like it for rythem and then boost it with the ts9 for leads.

I totally agree with you Mick: to use guitar’s volume to control gain properly is the essence of expressiveness in guitar playing. Said that, I find that there’s a problem: good transistor based fuzz/overdrive pedals use to clean up pretty well, but that “clean” sound you get cannot replace a clean amp sound, almost never at all. So, if that sound can be quite useful in live situations, you won’t probably record a pure clean tone using this technic, ‘cause you’re losing body, punch, maybe it gets to bright etc etc... the real challenge is to design a gain pedal that cleans up in a way that could REALLY replace your amp’s clean channel, or maybe even sound better. I cannot say more, but right now I’m working exactly on that... As always, great job guys, thanks.

This rules!!! The DR103 is THE Big Star amp!!! Alex Chilton's tone on the Radio City LP is angelic, and it's all strat and the DR103.
@mattgilbert73476 жыл бұрын
You're kidding??? I thought he used Fenders! Thanks so much, I love Big Star. I always thought Radio City - that chiming, spangly, power-pop par excellence - was done with Fenders, VOX, treble booster etc. It was a DR103??!!!? Dude, You just blew my mind.

Matt Gilbert, watch Nothing Can Hurt Me if you get a chance. Fantastic documentary and they cover their hair-brained HIWATT purchase, plus his DR103 is just chillin' in the background in the Ardent interviews.

Fun fact - in 1995 on the "Man Called Destruction" Tour I spotted Alex smoking a cig out the back of the Metro in Sydney. It was late afternoon, soundcheck time I reckon. I resisted the urge to gush, left him in peace, and then came back later that evening for a ripping show. He oozed charisma. Every female in the theatre would have willingly had his babies for him that night. Srsly. At one point I turned around and every single lass in the place was utterly transfixed. He was a...well. The name said it all. RIP, Chris, Alex, Andy (is Jody Stephens still alive?)

He used a sparkly Tele that night for the two Big Star numbers, idk the amp but it sounded Fendery. "Baby Beside Me" and "In the Street". #1 stuff. Everything else was Alex Chilton solo. Loved it.

Oh I’d love to hear your thoughts on how 432hz feels to play at high volumes. I find it to be a pleasing sound and a refreshing change from standard (modern) tuning. Plus it loosens the strings a little...
@ThatPedalShow6 жыл бұрын
We both think we really like it. E flat sounds flabby but ace. Standard sounds standard. 432 sounds somewhere in between, but really sweet.

What great timing! Just got a HI-TONE HT50DG, almost the same as an old Hiwatt and - MAN, these are great amps - phenomenal! And the Powerboost is a killer pedal. Pitty the Buffalo Fx version was missing. They are typically the closest (as the TD-X is to the Tube Driver) - do a Tube Driver into Hi Watt Show please!
@mattgilbert73476 жыл бұрын
Buffalo FX is supposedly the most faithful. I also like the Vick Audio Overdriver, good option if you are on a budget. I use cheap one-knob Power Booster made by a mate in Aussie. The treble thing is there, the fuzziness, the snarl and agression and sheer volume are alll there, but there's no actual control over anything other than level. Kinda like the Coloursound one-knob fuzz (but sounds nothing like it, as I have a clone of one of those as well). Placed after a Muff or a si Fuzz? MAGIC.
@mattgilbert73476 жыл бұрын
They should get Bjorn on and just do 'em all. Bk, Chandler, Muff, Power Booster, EQs, Mods, Delays, etc etc. A 2 hour Gilmour special TPS episode.

Awesome video. I’ve been using a Colorsound Powerboost at the end of my drive chain for years into a 50 watt Hiwatt Custom DR504 and it sounds great. I also have a 1974 DR103. It’s pretty similar in tone. You can still purchase an exact reissue 18v nonmaster volume from Macaris in the U.K. as well as a 9v with a master. Try it on a 50 watt and you’ll still get the same sound your after. It’s absolutely killer. Also, Buffalo FX Powerbooster is a damn good clone as well. Try an Effectrode Tube Drive or BK Butler Tube Driver into the Powerboost. It’s a remarkable feeling.

Between the Fx power boost and try fi colordriver, which one do you think would be better for David Gilmour 70-75’ powerboost live tones?
