I showed my husband this episode (who is not musical)as evidence of why I need to have so many different guitars ! 😁😊 different pickups, yes, but also different body types, wood types, maple cap, no maple cap, 250k pot 500k pot endless variables that keep my GAS for guitars going! You can’t just have one single coil and one p90 and one humbucker guitar, you have to have at least 20!!

P90's are not all created equal, so try a few out to see which ones you like. I have a P90 in my Les Paul Jr, which is a dog ear with AlNiCo slugs, while my PRS has soapbar P90's which sound completely different. Cheers

Just bought my first guitar with p90s and it's honestly a revolution for me. I love the clarity I get from them. Every note comes out of the chord and the drive just blossoms out of them in such an organic feeling way. They've inspired me hugely and I've had to basically adjust everything about how I play to get the most out of them. I can feel myself improving. Great video guys thanks

The big thing for me about P-90’s is bottom string clarity. Compared to humbuckers the lower notes just separate much better!

I found this show fascinating. Thank you. I think Dan nailed the difference between Mick's Les Paul Standard 1959 (Humbucker) Reissue and Simon's Les Paul 1960 Special (P90) Reissue when he says at 34:19, "There's a body behind that edge with that guitar that you don't get with this [1960 L.P. Special Reissue P90]". And, to me, that is a wonderful way to describe the difference, generally, between Humbuckers and P90s. I would go one further (and I am coming out of the closet here), and say that pickups and pots and where and how one plays are the main influences in accounting for differences in the sound of different guitars - more than tone woods, centre blocks, bridges, and construction of the guitar in other ways. (I feel ex-communication coming soon).

I know your comment is from four years ago but I wholeheartedly agree that it really comes down to a player's dynamics and just the overall way the essential electrical components play off each other. A few of my friends who play seemingly were unaware that the volume and tone controls are also extremely valuable in getting certain tones as well as significantly more control over ones playing.

Great show guys. Whilst I love the twang of my telecaster the sound I always anchored after was the raucous power of a P90 guitar. I have a couple of P-90 equipped guitars. Pride of place among them is my Custom Shop VOS re-issue 57 LP Junior. Without doubt a true rock and roll guitar. In terms of sound P-90’s definitely give you the best of both worlds. The added fatness over a single coil with the added richness & clarity that a humbucker lacks.

My favorite all time pickup. I had been shying away a bit from them typically because of the hum generated. Any gig venue with so-so power and it can really hum at times to an annoying level. This morning, however, I was going for an Andy Summers type tone for a recording I was doing. Normally you would think tele all day. Grabbed my Les Paul Junior with a Duncan Antiquity in it and "BOOM" nailed it. Super versatile. Well done my friends.

Yeah, the sound of that Casino can be heard all over The Beatles "Revolver" album. Amazing tone. I have a set of P-90 'Buckers in my souped-up Epiphone SG and they certainly have that full compressed attack you guys talked about, but there's no hum (unless I coil-split them). When I got the guitar, I played a little of Gilmour's "5AM" through my Bassbreaker and it sounded pretty authentic to my ears. Less honk but plenty of fat "bite and bark" Great video, as always.

I’m starting to wonder if people from the south of England are the only people who don’t give a shit about where they come from. For the first time EVER I'm not aligned with Mick (gulp!). I really, really like the Sonic Research Strobe tuner. Wayyy better than the Polytune or TU-x, IMO. However I have let people use my 'board to tune their guitars and they get totally confused by it, even really young guys. I find the Sonic Research to be more consistent too, especially as a chromatic with alternate tunings, in particular Eb where my old Poly used to drive me nuts! It has to be a left/right brain thing, but that doesn't really explain why I hate anything with millions of buttons. Give me a knob to twist any day of the week! Great video guys, and the ES-335 is beautiful.

Crikey. It's amazing how dull the PRS P-90s sound vs the upgrade you installed later. Your upgrade was a hugely good decision. I think my LP Special's P-90s have the perfect match of hotness and dynamic range. It pushes the front end of the amp quite a bit, but then when you lay back and really approach the guitar with delicacy, you get an incredible range of expression. P-90s are my favourite pickup. God help me if I succumb to that teasing wench of a Murphy Labs '56 Gold Top at a shop here in Tokyo. The wife will lose it. 😂

Hey Dan and Mick!! Brilliant show and thank you... I've a plug of some of my favorite pickups. Lindy Fralin makes Strat/Tele pickups called Steel Pole. They're like a regular Strat/Tele pickup had a baby with a P90. They come in two flavors. A 50% blend of the two, or 75% percent leaning towards the p90 tone profile. If you haven't heard them, I highly recommend them. Keep up the good work. Cheers!

I had an SG like that, although the neck PU was a Sidewinder version of the P90. It was actually horrible! there was such a disparity in output and tone between the PUs that I virtually had to set up the amp EQ for one or the other - whenever one sounded good, the other sounded horrible. There was no nice variation in tone just from switching pickup. Both could be reasonable in isolation, but not together. I ended up swapping both out for some Bare Knuckle P90s.

I have a Yamaha 611 HFM, loaded with a Seymour Duncan SP90 in the neck, and a Seymour Duncan Custom 5 humbucker, tapped, in the bridge. It is a great guitar! Quite a tonal range. I also have a Fender Telecaster Scorpion that I loaded with a single Seymour Duncan bridge P-Rail. That is a really cool setup, too. I got the optional switch plate from Seymour Duncan as well, that will allow for humbucker series, humbucker parallel, P90 alone and rail single coil alone. I am wondering about a super strat setup with P-rails top and bottom, and a stacked humbucker center?
@williamsmothers8830
@williamsmothers8830 6 жыл бұрын
Bearly Legal while similar, coil tapping and coil splitting are not identical. Coil splitting, as you know, removes one of the windings on a humbucker from the circuit. Coil tapping, on the other hand, means running an extra lead (or leads) from various points on the winding of any pickup. This will reduce the pickup impedance, depending on where the tap is placed, thereby reducing the output of the pickup and changing it's magnetic, electrical and tonal characteristics. I believe we can consider splitting to be a form of tapping.

for a metal band i’m in, I’ve played EMGs, humbuckers. Then went for single coils. Now will try the next tour with a P90 equipped guitar. It’s going to get noisy as hell in various dive bars and outdoor venues, but the tone,.....it is just to die for. That top end and honkiness just sounds amazing!

I have three guitars with P90s, all neck pickups,and two are paired with a Humbucker. I love all three but those two are really nice because of the combination of the pickups, which is one of my favorites. The two with the Humbucker: a G&L Fallout, it's a JB in the bridge that can be tapped, and a Reverend Double Agent OG with one of their own in the bridge and of course their bass contour. The third is a G&L Bluesboy 90 and it's paired with a Tele bridge. This is a very nice guitar as well, not too spanky and a nice alternative to the Tele neck. The P90s always sound clear and dynamic to me, never muddy. In fact, the Reverend's has a lot of top end for a P90, quite nice. Enjoyed this discussion and demonstration a lot.

Ah, cheers mate, sounds were happening this week, and when it’s happening I bring forth the rock, but if it’s not I play like a poo with fingers, fingers of poo. But when it is happening it’s my favourite thing in the world, which is why I’ve spent much of my life chasing good tone :)

It’s a bit of a coincidence that I’m going to be swapping out my EMG’s for P90 sized humbuckers soon. Can’t wait to find out what it will sound like.

I traded for an 02 Les Paul junior about a year ago, previous owner upgraded the electronics and put a tone pros bridge on it and it sounds incredible! P90s are a must for the arsenal!

The main thing you didn't touch here, imo, is fuzz! A p90 KILLS humbuckers when you go through something like a sun face. There is also the Gibson p100 pickup which looks just like a p90 on the outside but is actually a stacked humbucker. It doesn't sound like a p90. It's too anemic for bridge, but I personally think they are just perfect for neck position if you enjoy playing with a cleaner, blues or funk tone. Kind of bell or piano like response. Gibson stopped making these because the internet really hated them (for not being p90s). Most underrated pick up ever.

After watching this show for over +5 years, only today did I just realize that there's actually a guy (in this case, Simon) behind the camera the whole time on a lot of these. I know that they've referenced someone, but I always figured that it was for whoever was working post (to clarify - production, not the mail) not who was ACTUALLY HOLDING THE DAMN CAMERA. Thanks for all you do, Simon. And thanks to D&M for this helpful episode. I'm in the market for a new guitar (thinking 2021 SG??) and weighing my options between a P90 vs. Humbuggie model. Always like consulting my two favorite gear gurus before making a decision!

Indeed! Simon is there for most of the stuff we do and we’re lucky to have him! We’ve been flying solo a bit more just recently, with Katherine behind the cam and me (Mick here) doing all the post because of availability and, to be frank, trying to watch costs. But hey, it gets out there one way or the other!

Hey Mick! Thanks for the reply. While I’d honestly watch you guys shwang about even if it was recorded on an old Nokia, the high production quality is never lost on me! I just always like to recognize the heroes behind the scenes! Again, many thanks for all you and the crew do - and especially for continually fueling my GAS and pilgrimage of TONE! Cheers from drizzly ol’ (not-at-all in the middle of a heatwave-induced smoky hellscape) Seattle, WA!

@@goswo Awesome! What did you pick up? I’ve been looking for a while now, but keep getting caught in the P90 vs. Humb vs. gold foil cycle. I play mainly single-coils at the moment (s-type through tweed Deluxe clone), but would like something with a little more bottom end and compression for overdriven slide stuff. I was also just introduced to gold foil pickups, so I’ve even further from an answer haha

MrKeefelm exactly, I don't normally focus on the playing too much because of what you said, and that means Mick and Dan are doing it well, allowing us to listen to the pedals. Mick stating at the ent that now he wants to play confirms they are holding back for the video, taking one for the team!

I had a 60's tribute SG with P90's that I recently sold and bought a Strat. The one thing I really loved about that guitar that is when I bent the strings it almost sounded like a wah as the string moved across the magnets of the pups.
