What an awesome episode to watch! Darlene has been such an inspiration in my own life. I grew up singing her songs in church, leading them as a worship leader, and then teaching how to play them here on KZbin :). I loved hearing the mention of Delirious? - they have been extremely influential in my life as well. As a regular viewer of TPS (and owner of a GigRig G3S), this was so cool to see on the show. We are pretty big fans of church/worship guitar tone :). Dan - I also wanted to say thank you for including a link to our website in the description of this video. So glad that you spent the time on listening and attending to the purpose of the music in church. Many times there is an obsession with getting the right tone or effect, but knowing how and when to use it is of primary importance. Having led music for the last 22 years I have seen so many musicians lose sight of that. For church guitarists (acoustic or electric). I recommend first dialing in your “always on” tone and play for a few weeks with only that. Then think of all other pedals as “expression pedals” each one helps you express something different, think of your reverb as peaceful, and find the setting that best reflects that, then try to find the joy setting. Well done! Thank you so much.

Dan!!!! Oh my. You were already awesome but you’re Darlene’s bro… that’s a new level. Seriously though… I grew up in church and also grew up loving blues and Clapton and Skynyrd etc. Every male in my family is a minister but I just wanted to play the Clapton type music or sound in church. Her style of music opened up that door. But what she said at min 27 is the #1 issue still. On all the worship guitar channels everyone tries to play the exact sound and even talk about how they don’t have the same guitar or amp as they used in the track. I’m always saying to use what you got and play what you feel. Doing that is the blues of worship… yes while supporting the purpose as she described. So awesome. So thankful you did this episode. So cool!

This was fascinating and enchanting. Thanks Dan! My love of music was forged in Church in the least rock and roll way possible - as a Choirboy! However, once the early 90s kicked in and writers like Graham Kendrick and others started introducing guitar into worship music, I got the opportunity to play my guitar in a few worship bands. My best memory of that time was hearing my humble Tanglewood electro-acoustic guitar through every speaker on every pillar of Rochester Cathedral. Church music in many forms still moves me, and without the foundation of choral singing and understanding harmony, I don't think I'd have the ear and instinct I do now.

Oh wow! Darlene Zschech is your sister?! Growing up in the old AOG churches in Adelaide in the '80s and '90s, Darlene was a massive part of the movement that led to young guitarists like me actually finding a place in church bands. Playing at a Youth Alive rally was, up until that point, the absolute highlight of my musical journey. My faith journey took a different path later, and I'm quite cynical about how contrived and directed worship music is, but I can appreciate amazing musicianship and will be forever grateful for people like Darlene, Steve Grace, Geoff Bullock, and numerous others who gave me the conviction to keep doing what I was doing in those formative years.
