VCPI changed my rig and perspective on gear forever. I used to wonder how guys would go out with vintage/traditional single coil pickups and manage to gig until I realized most of my noise was coming from my pedalboard, not the pickups. Watched that video, then re-watched it. I was underpowering pedals, not isolating my wah, it was a mess. Thanks lads for the great content!

24:55 Mick, Neil Degrass Tyson's counter to your argument would be that space exploration brings about so much innovation and new technologies that it is worth it. He argues that stimulating young minds to wonder about that stuff is important in order to get more engineers, scientists and such to fix tomorrow's problems.

Patrick Fitzgerald I do not believe that to be true. Regardless of where the argument comes from, though, it's food for thought. It might be a foolishly roundabout way to solve current problems. Though in an era of flat earthers where science is loosing ground in certain corners, I'd agree we need more critical thinkers and scientists.

I thought the the black hole being so far away was what made it so impressive that they were able to take a picture of it. Whenever the news reports new developments in physics or outer space, I usually find the articles boring because I don't know enough about science to understand the significance of the new discovery, but I still thought it was pretty amazing that people were able to photograph something so far away. Anyway, good video, as usual. I always enjoy watching. Keep up the great work!

When I was in a little band at the age of 19 we were a jam band. Whenever we "played" it was jamming but nothing like Mick describes. We would each take turns adding to a story we would know or makeup on the spot. Once we had a theme we would jam/play and usually we did pretty well. But that was us, everyone's different, and that was in the 70's so... I like it when you guys get carried away with a great tone or sound.

Just on old computers - I used to teach young kids in some pretty hard up areas, so I taught myself to bring old pc's and macs (even 10 year plus) back to life with free linux and google software. Gave them to students so they would have something at home to get online with. There are organisations that do the same. Worth a look online to see if there's one in your area before you chuck an old PC or Mac in the bin. (not having a go btw Mick, I'm sure yours were bloody ancient and wouldn't even connect to the net.)

The last two pedals in my guitar board are stereo, the tc electronic Mimiq doubler and Arena reverb. The Mimiq is fed mono from a tc electronic Spark booster, and outputs stereo to the Arena. If I am only using one amp, I simply plug in one output cable on the Arena, the last pedal in my signal chain, and it gives me the summed mono output to send to my amp.

Totally agree on inductive interference avoidance. 90° crossings are the way. Unbalanced signal cables feeding high gain circuits crossing AC mains being likeliest culprits If you Have to coil up excess cable length it is well to know that nice tidy regular coils are COILS and therefore have inductance, they can pick up interference and also radiate interference. Doubling the cable up before coiling gives each turn an opposing turn which should cancel out the coil effect. Similarly random “spaghetti” arrangement also largely avoids the effect. I noticed it with PA Speaker cables. My rig's Mid and Highs (of a 4-way rig) were noticeably stronger with random bundling of excess length. Coils would also be affecting the damping factor 'n stuff of the Bass and Subs but that's harder to discern with the ears. I love the pedal base 180° flipping tip. I've been ripping the rubber bases off all this time.

One last word from the Duke of Daisy, I use wall warts to keep my 7-amp rig atomised, e.g. I have a two amp wet-dry rig in town right now, and can seperate my two bass amps for another player. Recently encountered a shortage of mains outlets and for the very first time chained up five low amperage Boss pedals to conserve there. I chose to not include any digital processor pedals &c. so no worries, but the upshot was that I have been inspired to get a Boss tuner as well.

My old DOD chorus (the andy one) does a different thing for stereo. It's the same signal, but filtered in different ways so that one output is more trebly and the other has the full frequency range. About the velcro on the rubber, another not invasive way is to cut two long strips and screw them to the corners. Works for me

7:39.about tap tempo: though its pretty obvious when an echo is out of time and can be a hindrance, the best way (for me) is to have an echo around 300 ms but LOW in the mix, only becoming opvious in pauzes.Hence you don't get ruled by the echo time b can use it when you need it...

Also - "...there is still no tuner made that makes me sound in tune". I found this, particularly when I used to use my N4 (with its Buzz Feiten offset nut). The best compromise I found was to tune every string to the 5th fret. Even though all my guitars had perfect intonation as set up, the variation in my picking velocity and fretting-hand pressure when live-adrenaline kicked in made a mockery of that, but tuning at the 5th actually fixed most of those problems on every guitar I've got. Of course, the other guitarist in my band had a Les Paul, so that wrecked it all anyway. At least I could sanctimoniously roll my eyes at him once I got it sorted at my end, though.

Thanks for answering my question about tap tempo vs Echosex style solutions. I don't have "delay" in my chain now, but I'm realizing when I hear others play it, I'm more moved by delay that acts a bit like reverb or even as a short time thickener, or just anything that adds feeling. I suppose I'm less interested in using delay to elevate a riff into something like a "streets have no name'" vibe.. I'd prefer my fingers do that :). I guess I didn't know the right question, then you guys asked the right question, and now I think I know what I want in a delay (i.e. EchoSex set and forget reverb-like delay with light modulation, the modulation I think prevents the repeats from competing with my dry signal too much, in addition to darkening the repeats a little).

On the Power: I'm guessing the crazy 1A @ 12V of the Elektron Analog Drive is the main reason it's not on many boards. I've bought it anyways because it is available for a great discount and it does sound amazing (and I love MIDI). At least their included power supply is isolated but from what I've seen there is no pedal supply that will do 2A @ 12V which is what would be needed to replace it.

Hey Dan and Mick, Bas here! I'm actually a drummer from The Netherlands, but that doesn't stop me from binge watching your show! First of all, thanks for all the amazing, invaluable stuff you guys are teaching, please keep up the fantastic work! Secondly, I have a specific question regarding pedal order and amp choice in a band setting, because we are struggling to optimise our band sound and since we are all staunched viewers of the show, we think you might have a word of wisdom to guide us: We currently have 3 guitar players, one has a strat-like guitar with the pedals in the following order: Polytune 3, D&M Drive (boost first), EP Booster (18v), Cali76 (18v), Lehle 1@3, Empress Echosystem, Neunaber Immerse mk2 (all powered by a Strymon Zuma) into a W/D/W-set up with a Vox AC15 (wet) , Fender Bassbreaker (wet) and a Pro Junior (dry). We are considering swapping the Pro Junior for a Blues Junior and go AC15 (wet)/ Bassbreaker (dry)/ Blues Junior (wet). Guitar player 2 has a Les Paul, a Marshall combo and a Tube Screamer, Bogner LaGrange. We are thinking about a decent Marshall/The Sheriff 44/Twin Reverb silverface ourselves instead of the combo. Guitar player 3 has a Tele and PRS with a Kemper. Ow and we still have a Boss CE-1 lying around... What do you guys suggest if we want to make sure that they supplement each other as good as possible? We are searching for amazing and hopefully not-anywhere-near-unobtanium set-ups (although it already seems a little late for that...) which sound killer for rock music in the style of Biffy. We don't mind swapping pedals with one another or exchanging them if need be. Do you have any tips whatsoever for us? Greetings from my bandmates, me and our robbed bank accounts! :)

Power supply wise I've had a Voodoo Labs PP2+ for well over 10 years and never had any issues, the only reason I upgraded to the Visual Sounds CS12 was because I wanted the higher voltage outputs to power larger digital pedals... right now the CS12 powers my HX Effects, 6 stomps, a wah and a Decibel 11 bypass looper with no problems
@StringsOfCrossroads
@StringsOfCrossroads 5 жыл бұрын
Marc Grainger wow! That’s interesting as I have a Hx effects and I hate the included power supply. I was under the impression it required 3000mA and that most multi power supplies would provide a maximum of only 500mA, but you appear to not have a problem! I might look into that! Thanks for the tip!
@MarcG28
@MarcG28 5 жыл бұрын
@@StringsOfCrossroads the CS12 works fine ONCE it's one of the newer ones... the first batch had an issue, but, Visual Sounds will send you a new or or upgrade your power supply if you send them the old one.... the HX Effects only really needs just over 1 amp to work and the way the CS12 is designed is that as long as the TOTAL mA rating isn't surpassed the unit will supply the needed amount to the respective output regardless of the rating written on it... the owner of Visual sounds confirmed this on a video, basically said the ratings were there for compliance requirements.
@StringsOfCrossroads
@StringsOfCrossroads 5 жыл бұрын
Marc Grainger thanks for the reply. That’s really helpful info! Must admit I had only really looked at the rating on the supplied hx effects which was at 3000mA and figured I was stuffed to find an alternative so I actually have an extension lead under my board along with another power supply so I try keep the board power neat and compact. But it’s still a pain as that stupid adapter line 6 provide keeps falling out!

I cannot believe that in almost 30 years of using Boss pedals, I have never heard you can flip the bottom plate over. OTOH, I have also never had an issue with Velcro sticking to the rubber, on the few occasions I've used Velcro on a Boss pedal, though I've never tried it with Dual Lock. I've been using three Boss BCB-3 pedal boxes for my Boss pedals for at least 20 years, so it's really never been an issue, though. Currently, my bass board is 100% Boss, and my guitar board is 0% Boss.

I think I’ve watched every episode. Love what you guys do! Could you guys consider doing an episode on pedals that provide functionality but not tone? For example “Radial Engineering” has an entire line of pedals that are very functional and don’t provide audio coloring like the ABY bones switcher or the headlight. Or review some of the other switchers that are available. Dan’s products are amazing and probably the nicest with the most features. And we know he has a bunch of accessory pedals that provide functionality without tone shaping. But there’s also a number of smaller and cheaper channel switchers etc. it might actually be a nice way to promote your products Dan.

I had to work hard to find the Lehle p-split and Dan's Humdinger is about the only other one that I have seen on the market. That there's a product that more folks should know about.

I wired up a summing switch for my board for mono situations. Good idea? Bad idea? It was real quirky for a bit.

You can have the quietest (no hum) rig ever and if there is a neon beer light on the stage (and you're not allowed to turn it off) you just gotta suffer it. But remember only you can really hear it (because your standing nearest to your speaker) and that's only between songs anyway.

I need a fork lift pallet for all my pedals to fit onto. My missus says i’m missing the point, so i’m going to buy a Champ and single pickup Danelectro as that has to be the answer. That’ll learn her!

Regarding the fatigue of the SIS cables, I asked EA about this as I wanted to see if it would be ok to use one as a patch cable between a floor mounted wah and my pedal board and they said it would be absolutely fine. I've been using one that way for a couple of months and it's OK so far.....

I always thought that this is something someone inside boss has done on pourpose, please if you have some insider ask for it, the flipping cover trick works i think for 100% boss pedals, you can do the same also with the crybaby to not ruin the label. Probably the ts9 not the 808 or viceversa, i cannot remember. But i think it worth the try with every pedal. Another trick if you want is to use pieces of bicycles chains, it's a figure 8 and with 2 you can screw the pedal in the board and forget about velcro.

Mick you are way to critical of your playing. Some of my favorite jams are with you and Pete on Guitar Paradiso. My favorite is "Can Gretsch Guitars Do That?" They still have not been able to properly replace you on Anderton's TV. Pete and your playing complemented each other perfectly.

I love Pete like a brother. And a lot of that was fun, but something changed in me where I just lost all appetite for playing. Trying to find it again obviously, but at the moment it's gone. Scary shit!

Do a show on pedal redundancy management. That is, when your board is too cluttered, what pedals can be considered redundant, and when push comes to shove, what gets eliminated? Now, do the same thing for switching. What is the smallest smart switching scheme there is?

Regarding the mono/stereo thing. I currently have my guitar going into the mono input of my Hall Of Fame and a mic going into the stereo input. I have two cables coming out of the HOF into the mono and stereo inputs of my Boss Looper, and then just one cable coming out of my looper's mono output into my amp (I only have one viable amp/cab at the moment, so I can't actually do a proper stereo set up). It seems to work okay and I get reverb on the guitar and mic. Is this okay? P.S. it's not for gigging, it's just for practice and experimental recording.

So, when I was reading the show description (yeah, I’m that guy, but Mick really does a great job doing them) I noticed you said you would answer questions even if the question wasn’t about the show. Just a thought, maybe on VCQ do a small segment at the end, “off the subject” segment to answer a question of the week that has nothing to do with the previous video. Would love to hear answers to things that have nothing to do with the video but ask a unique question. Again, just a thought, love the show and keep it up.

Question about power supply - I have it right yet on some effects I have a humming sound. Same power with different pedals (same specs) don't produce it. All pedal with different power don't make it at all. Power or pedal problem?
