155,King of battle!!! My step fathers dad was not part of death march but was in hiding in the mountains with a few other American soldiers and Philippine soldiers or brave citizens without military training and he told my step father all the time how brave and hard as nails they were they are the only reason he and fellow American soldiers survived and how even back then the Philippine people were soft spoken and were deadly quick and brave when fighting the Japanese, I never met him but yep dad said he only talked about it when really old and only time he ever cried when remembering how vicious the Japanese were to Philippine people but they never betrayed the Americans hiding places and no americans would of lived if not for the tougness and bravery of the philapino people,I really appreciate this episode and can't wait till I'm there,Thanks

Your comment brought a tear to my eye. I either saw in a documentary or read somewhere that many Filipinos were killed when caught delivering aid or trying to give water or food to those on the Bataan Death March. & yes there were many non formal military as well as actual Philippine military who fought & died. It disturbs me when some history (to me) seems to disregard that & attribute all military endeavors of WW2 to the Americans (who were indeed very brave & made many sacrifices including many their very lives, & I am a proud American), but so many for most of my life seem to have no knowledge at all of Phil-USA history. Except those like your step grandfather…God rest his soul….

My lolo survived the Death March because he knew how to cook and a Japanese officer made him his house cook. He learned Nihonggo too. Once he was freed, he went home to Panay Island and led the guerillas against the Japanese and retired as Captain when the war ended. He then continued law school and finished his degree.

Happy Good Friday from NYC in the USA. As I suffered through another 45 degree (F) and drizzly evening in Manhattan, I was so glad to stumble upon your Blog! The appreciative and happy folks in the Philippines always warm my heart. I truly enjoyed your informative narrative regarding an important and pivotal piece of both American and Philippine history. My grandfathers' were both part of "The Greatest Generation" that fought and protected the United States during World War 2. Sadly, since it has now been more than 80 years, most of those heroic individuals are no longer with us. Once again, excellent work! You really seem natural at doing that and your enthusiasm and passion are very apparent! Looking forward to your next video.

A lot of Foreigners doesn't know is that Bataan was the Dumaguete of the 70s and 80s when the President of the Philippines opened the Economic zone in Mariveles. There was once a hotel called Kamaya Point Hotel which was owned by a company called Landoil. That hotel was a hub for foreigners for meet-up. That hotel and the surrounding land is now a well known Maritime Academy. Besides the Economic Zones, Bataan is also one of the biggest Electricity distributor to its neighbouring provinces and it includes Manila. TThat is why Bataan is one of the more expensive province to live in due to its high employment. My dad was there when Slazenger Britain opened a factory there and he stayed for 6 years.

If you're coming back to Manila from Bataan, there is a ferry boat service from Bataan - SM MOA. One is in Mariveles and one in Orion, both are towns in Bataan. It's a lot more comfortable trip than going on a bus esp as the Holy Week break winds down. The NLEX traffic will be horrendous. I think the fare for the ferry is under P500. Awesome episode, as always, Mike.

"Kuya" is used to address an older male relative or friend (especially one's own brother), and means "brother".
