I used these new style treated posts on my hen/duck run and within 5 years 2/3 of them had rotted at the base, while creosote posts my gran had fenced part of the land with, lasted 40 years and now 55 years later there is still a handful still standing

You want Richard to mix the old oil 50 50 with diesel this allows it to soak into the wood better, poor man's creosote. They only really need to be treated about 6 Inches above ground level, the rotting point is where air meets constant dampness at ground level above or below that usually lasts ok. I was also taught to only hammer the staples fully home at the straining points the rest just slightly loose to allow the wire to move with differing temperatures.

McVeigh Parker are selling "Plastic" fence posts. They also sell the Steel "T" posts. However they are not cheap. Luckily I live in the South East and untreated chestnut lasts (Some of mine are 25 years old and still good. My local woodman sells they at less than £2.50 each.

Working hard as usual Richard good stuff. some fencing here in Canada is metal posts with wood post strainers. Someone will introduce a new product that will cost much more of course so hoarding some posts is a very good idea. :) :)

Can you get split chestnut stakes any more? They were produced from coppiced chestnut woodland in Sussex and we had them delivered in rail trucks using them ourselves and selling a lot to neighbouring farmers. They lasted for years and were produced from regrowth of the coppiced woodland
@paulf25292 жыл бұрын
Still produced, find a small estate sawmill, the posts always look a bit odd as the bark falls off and they go grey but they stay good for years. Other plus point is you don't ruin them if you cut the top down or notch for a strainer so no need to splash creosote onto cut ends.

Richard I can hire five strand barbed wire fence installed with all material included, for $1.50(US) per foot or $4.90 (US) per meter. So your 200 meters would have cost around $950 (US) 780 (pound sterling). So I repair my fences but I usually hire new fence installed by a fencing contractor. The last time I figured out my cost of materials for building the fence myself, the contractor was only about 15% higher with the labor included. He is buying post and wire by the truck load. So his cost is way less than mine.

It’s always annoying how stakes rot off where they meet the air, yet the rest of the stake is pretty good. I have been wondering about Charing that area of the stake with a blowtorch like the Japanese do, to see if that makes any difference 🤔

Isn't there fencing grants available for farmland you have just acquired in England? We have some fencing grants in Scotland but it seems to be more easily available for new farmland acquired or young farmers compared to farmers that have owned the land for many years

It’s too bad they can’t figure out how to make affordable recycled plastic and wood composite stakes. They would be durable and last forever. 👍👍😁 Good luck with your fencing.

Yeah.. fencing can get expensive really quick. I do fencing on a horsefarm.. all electrified fencing.. And about treatment of stakes. I think it also had to do with how long they dip em for. The longer they dipped the deeper the treatment goes. These days they go the proces quicker i guess.

I put in a 5 inch top treated post in 3 feet than two 4 inch top 7 foot post in two foot. than a 2x6 from the top of the corner to the bottom of the brace than to the top of that brace to the bottom of the bottom second brace post. But I usually put 4 wires on a post pulled pretty tight with a stretcher. In canada we've had that cresoak stuff banned for a while. Dad used to soak his own out of a barrel. we have those pressure treated post here and they seem to last I got 30 year old post in the ground that are holding up. I don't know maybe its the amount of moisture or the fact that for half the year we are froze up pretty hard here. I will say the reason why it got banned in canada was a personal safety issue. Or least thats what I was told by dad.
@leonkingston40342 жыл бұрын
Same as farmer p, can't understand if you're spending good money on good materials why not spend a bit more and get a contractor to put the fence up properly. Shortly it makes sense, get the wire properly tight and it should last for years!!🤔🤔
@lancepearson40352 жыл бұрын
Guess the cost of not fencing = 20 years of frustration with cows getting out could help with the pain of the cost. Anyway well done you reusing good recycled material and totally agree with you re the nutty rules the stupid bureaucrats invent without considering the consequences
