...and to add: some people are afraid to close the flue a little but there's a reason they are adjustable..main thing is to keep the chimney properly maintained/cleaned..and yes: there are still chimney sweep services available in most metro areas and bedroom communities/suburbs..find a good one and use them. *;-)*

i lived in the high desert for a decade - one with some serious winters..and i learned, with the help of the locals, is that the key to keeping a fire going in a fireplace and/or a wood stove, for at least *most* of the night is: use dry, dense wood or old, dry, dense wood [legal wood, of course, not protected old growth]. that + keep the glass or metal doors or screen closed and the flue/vent open enough to slow the burn rate down, *after* the fire is consistently burning *well.* ...and never, *ever* close the flue until all combustibles are completely burned out, completely extinguished - for safety/breathing reasons..if in doubt?: just leave the flue open or in an emergency, toss a bit of water over it, too and open all doors and windows in the house...hope that helps someone. *:-)* p.s. ...some people are afraid to close the flue a little but there is a reason they are adjustable - and not just permanently wide open! main thing is to keep the chimney clean, have it properly maintained on a regular basis. and yes: chimney sweeps services still exist - find and use them! *;-)*
