Younger people may not know this song, but it was a monster hit around 1970. The singer, Roberta Flack, gave us a style and cadence that was new and mesmerizing, and the lyrics were truly beautiful. What is so crazy is that 11 year old Angelina casually covers this iconic song in her own way. Yes, it’s Roberta Flack’s masterpiece, and like always Angelina pays genuine respect to the original, but she has the musicality and confidence to do it her own way-and it’s just beautiful and touching. Why am I surprised? Bohemian Rhapsody, California Dreamin, I’d Rather Go Blind, Yellow Brick Road… Untouchable, iconic songs that we now love all over again in a new way.

That guy is Egil Clausen, who played for her after NGT until she moved to LA. Here, as in many of her cover songs, you see her reading the lyrics on her ipad....sometimes on her lap and sometimes just off screen. In interviews with Egil Clausen (Oslo) and Iven Mendez (LA) they both said the sessions were never preplanned. They meet and discuss songs that one or the other like, choose one and then record it. The guitarist takes a few minutes to familiarize himself with the chords and Angelina downloads the lyrics. Most uploads are from their first take of the song, sometimes the second. Both interviews were conducted by Alan Papier and can be found on his KZbin channel. Angelina determines the speed and tempo of the songs and the guitarists follow her lead. Think about that for a minute....she produces all those spectacular and highly emotional songs that touch our hearts on the first or second time with the musician. The more I learn about this young genius, the more I respect and admire her.

The guitarist is not her father, but rather Egil Claussen, her regular guitarist in Norway from when she was 7-12. In an interview on Alan Papier's YT channel, he said these recording sessions are totally unplanned. They go back & forth with "Do you know this song, or that song." When they come up with one they both agree on, he reviews the cords while she looks up the lyrics on her i-pad & grandma Mery gets the videocam ready. Angelina says "Just follow me" & this is what you get, raw, unadulterated, pure, live music. He said it's almost always only 1 take, all the way through & it's magic. If there is a 2nd take, it's because he made a mistake. All of her home videos with him are the same, as are the ones with Ivan Mendez in LA, when she was 12 until she signed with Republic Records at 14. Who does that??? Angelina makes up these arrangements as she feels them, on the fly. WTF!!! As you said, this is an 11 yo kid! I've never seen anything like it before. Nice reaction & just keep them coming.

Great reaction, I appreciate your honest analysis of this extraordinary young artist. Angelina has over 150 covers and other videos that she has recorded between the ages of 6 and 15 which is her current age. She won Norway's Got Talent at the age of 8 and has already established herself as an accomplished jazz artist. Her preferred genre is Jazz but she has done covers of about every genre you can name. What you will find in Angelina is a vocalist who doesn't do vocal gymnastics, she simply and beautifully interprets the story and meaning of the song and pours her soul into every performance. Angelina has sung all over the world for Nobel Laureates, heads of state, music icons, and other dignitaries. She has performed everywhere from small weddings of a few people to London's O2 stadium, and Seoul South Korea with 40,000 people. She performs at jazz festivals, conferences, and charity benefits. At the age of 15, she is a seasoned performer with 8 years of recording and performing. Many of her live performances when she was 10, 11, and 12 years old blow away even the original adult performers of the songs she sings. She is definitely worth your time to experience and get to know. She has covered Sinatra, Elvis, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Queen, Miley Cyrus, Patsy Cline, James Brown, Lana Del Rey, Norma Jones, Adele, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Screamin Jay Hawkins, and many more.

Nick, you are right on with regard to her skills and her voice control. But one important thing to add. During her recent concert she played with world-renowned legendary musicians. One of them said to her that he thinks she is the best talent to come along in decades. He said there are a lot of good singers out there and she is one of them. But there is something that sets her apart from most and that is her ability to tell a story. He said you are a storyteller and only a few singers reach that level. That's what makes you special. The guitarist is Egil Clausen, not sure I have the spelling exactly correct. He played with her for dozens of songs during her earlier career.

One of the aspects of Angelina that most reactors miss or at least they don't mention or don't catch is that in almost all her videos she's singing and reading the lyrics from her phone or paper and still interprets, conveys and communicates the emotions of every note and lyric while reading them. It kind of amazes me how she can be *so* friggin' good, and yet *not* be a perfectionist. This video is a prime illustration of that. As other commenters have already pointed out, both Egil, the guitarist here, and Ivan, the guitarist on "Stay" (for example), have said that these "live at home" covers are often quite spontaneous one-take affairs, with a second or third take usually only necessary if the guitarist messes up. Here, both Angelina _and_ Egil made mistakes (she accidentally jumped around between verses, repeating some lines and omitting others; he accidentally "muffled" a note that was supposed to ring out cleanly), but she decided to just "let it go" and not try to do additional takes until everything was perfect. Many of her videos where she's playing instruments are similarly imperfect. And almost all of those are cases where she could have done any number of takes, and/or practiced the songs as much as she wanted, to make them perfect. But she chose not to. That says a lot about her priorities. (When it comes to her singing, I can kind of understand it. Here, for example, she could easily say, "So what if I made mistakes? I still killed it." When it comes to her guitar and piano playing, though, it's very different. To put it bluntly, she is nowhere near as good an instrumentalist as she is a vocalist. But I have to admit, she seems to have gotten a lot better in the last couple of years. To what extent that's because she's actually gotten better, as opposed to simply being more careful about what she posts, I can't say for sure. But I suspect it's mainly due to actual improvement. Check out the totally effortless guitar playing on her "Killing Me Softly" TikTok, for example. [Coincidentally, another Roberta Flack song.])

Egil is Norwegian and has been playing for her since she was 6 or 7. Here they are in his studio. Notice that she was reading the lyrics and could still put that much emotion into the song. Most of the time they do this is in one take, according to two of her guitarists.

Great reaction Nick! Angelina admitted in an interview during her recent Christmas concert that no one in her family has any musical inclinations (although I believe her sister Juliette is becoming quite a talented dancer). As many have indicated, her guitarist is Egil Clausen (from Norway - I believe it is pronounced Egg-EEL). During her Christmas concert interview just over a week ago, she was asked if she had any plans to perform with Egil again, and she excitedly said yes... she hopes when she resumes touring that he will do some dates with her and even record a cover or two with him. This past year, Alan Papier (a super fan/reactor who has done many videos specifically about Angelina) brilliantly had the wonderful idea of interviewing two of her Angelina’s guitarists. Egil from Norway and Ivan Mendez, who she performed many covers with in LA. Both of these interviews are VERY fascinating and are the source of much of the information commenters share with the reactors. If you can find the time to view them they are well worth it (not as a reaction, but on your own “free” [🙄] time). I’ve left the link to the Egil Claussen interview below. Like all Norwegians he is very fluent in English. I hope you get a chance to watch it - I think you’ll enjoy it immensely. 😉👍 m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmbaiKuhasuMgJI

The guitarist says they don’t do a practice run through.

A lot of the videos with Angelina and Egil are done at his studio. He went on a world tour with her as well. Alan Papier has an interview with him. There's a video before this where Alan talks about the interview, then shows the unedited interview. He also interviews Ivan Mendez in another video. Here is the one with Egil kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKCXgYOtfdFjbc0

Not her Dad. This is a Norwegian guitarist she worked with her last year in Norway. You said the same thing about Ivan Mendez, the guitarist she worked with in LA. I think you'd like the interview with Ivan Mendez. Look up "The Angelina Jordan Story- Ivan Mendez Interview (LA guitarist)". You might be interested to note that all those videos were made in 1 or 2 takes.

Honor to Roberta Flack who took this song and made it a moving masterpiece. In my opinion unattainable. Perhaps Angelina is the only singer who will be able to equalize it in a few years.

I've never listened to this carefully until now where you are pointing out some things that she's doing. Do you think that she does her runs spontaneously or with some planning? I have always been curious about that. I like to believe that they just come naturally without any thought. With her extensive history of listening to many jazz songs and artists I think a lot of the runs are improvised on the run. Anyone else ever wonder about this? It's masterful however she does them. You noticed something I have seen her do many times as she communicates with her guitarist using her eyes I have heard other reactors say she is ahead of the beat or behind the beat when singing with her new pianist or with a orchestra and do you think it's because she is use to set the beat ,as a singer I would enjoy hearing your thoughts on this
