Dear Iyah, I must say this reminds me of my mother's reaction when my husband and I got together. There were varying reasons, that I didn't understand until later, why she reacted the way that she did. Nonetheless, it hurt me very deeply. What bothered me most was precious time that could have been shared was gone, lost. She was all I had, my only sister was deceased, and my mother and I were always so very close. What I am about to say, I say most humbly. Like you, and Rafal, my husband and I were a very strikingly handsome couple. Everywhere we went we drew attention. Men envied him, and women were jealous. Over all his family embraced me, but a few of his sister's (older, married multiple times), were very nasty. A dear friend of mind said to me once, that sometimes mothers can be very envious of their daughter's, and asked if I thought that could be it. And, at the time I said no. My mother was (still is at 90) very beautiful, she had a handsome husband, beautiful healthy children, a good life overall. I just couldn't imagine it, and she always wanted the best for me. It was true to some extent. And, I will just say that women are their own worst enemies, and can be very vicious and spiteful toward one another. I knew this at an early age, and have only a few dear life long women friends. So, here are a few tips: Keep your circle of women in your life very small, and make sure you are of a like mind, and presence. Most important, you are a woman now, not your mother's little girl. Protect what you have with Rafal, for what you have is sacred. And, trust me when I say - there will be people that will try to destroy what you and he have. I guarantee it! You belong to him now! Your place is always with him. Always. Make beautiful the home that he provides for you, and any children you may be blessed with. Be very careful what you share with others. Iyah, I don't know, sometimes us mothers been down those roads, sometimes we see things before it happens, do make your own decisions BUT also listen to what your mother has to say,her wisdom. Always remember, she loves you more than anything... even when you're wrong, she'll be the only one standing right there by your side when everyone else is gone. She'll be telling the world about your accomplishments and how good of a girl you have always been. And quess what, this is a cold world (dog eat dog)... anything that can go wrong will go wrong and it's going to happen, your mom will be the first person come to mind..She will always have your back. Love her while she is still alive. She is the best friend you will ever have. Don't let anyone tell you different or interfere with that. Give her time to adjust to this new situation, she will get there. She only wants the best for you. Don't forget, you will always be her baby no matter what.

With all due respect, to be honest, I see why Iyah’s mom is upset. I may be wrong (they may be saving money for kids college and stuff) but, judging from the venue, it’s obvious that Rafael doesn’t have much money. It’s enough to provide so that Iyah doesn’t have to work now but marrying an older man is a sacrifice- most likely he will die before you. He is getting the benefits of your youth and beauty years, he gets to be young again through you and you should be compensated for it. My mother reacted pretty much the same way when I married my Algerian husband (I’m English)now 30 years later and blessed with 5 children, it couldn’t be more different….my mother is in the final stages of Alzheimer’s, my husband and I are her full time carers, she absolutely adores him, time has shown her what I always knew to be true of him, that he is the most wonderful, caring genuine man and we are beyond blessed to have him in our life’s. My son is getting married in February, we're not excited at all! Because her family, is horribly rude to our beliefs! We believe in God, they don't, we don't drink or smoke they do! There using my son, to get her away from the toxic X boyfriend! That's not a reason to be married! Her family is reckless, and has no respect for each other! The Mom swears like she got out of prison,they have no class! My son is going along with it , because he just wants to get married! He thinks he's getting old,at 27. The Mom is cheating on the Dad for 20 years,so my son is eye candy 🍭 for the Mom. The family is TOXIC, there all alcoholic's ,my family dosen't believe you have to drink to have fun! If I say anything to her parents,my son will walk away from us! He needs help, he needs to realize life isn't a JOKE, he's still to immature,at this age! It's a huge mess! And there dissing our family,by changing the wedding to be in Hawaii, so grandparents are not able to come, she's disrespectful to our family! I wasn't raised to be inconsiderate toward others.

Dont worry you guys just remember its your day and anyone who acts out you dont have to allow it and must address it. I have that type of family also who acted out before the wedding day so I did something about it. I called each and every one of them and personally (nice tone) uninvited them; including brothers, sister, and Mom. They knew I would not allow it and they tried me anyway. They tried to trash me but it backfired. People told them they should be ashamed. They apologized to me. I had the best time on my day without them and then I accepted their apologizes. Just dont play into negativity, stand up to it. You will gain respect trust me. Make sure everyone know IT'S YALL'S DAY. Congrats again from Maywood IL.
