Thompson lost every round. He fought like he just wanted to survive and not get hurt. Klitschko was patient and got his Knockout.

The discipline, skill and power of Klitschko, the way he measures and calculates through the fight, are superb. Interesting to compare his stance, relying on measuring distance and reflexes, with Usyk who is more mobile with lateral movement, and just a few moments where Klitschko switched to hooks around the head, when I think Usyk would have got through the gap between Thomson’s guard and hit him straight down the pipe. Also Klitschko was a very cautious fighter which is no criticism, because hitting whilst not getting hit is key, but I think that’s what cost him the Fury & Joshua fights. He finally went after Fury in the last round but it was too late, and he had Joshua on a slab after R6 but held back to play the long game (apparently on the advice of his brother!) But looking back now, comparing their legacies, Klitschko was champ for 11 years and neither Fury nor Joshua have been able to match it.

Thompson looked like he didn't want to be there and was scared of making Klitschko angry by hitting him. Anyone who gets in the ring is a brave man but it has to be all or nothing in the ring, if not the other guy will probably knock you out anyway. I guess he was just looking for a pay check.

Display of skill and power by WK vs a capable and skilled opponent in Tony Thompson, who at the time was the top American heavyweight. Unfortunately the fights vs WK took something out of him. But he managed to have two significant wins on his resume after this fight, by defeating Odlanier Solis and David Price, who at the time was considered by many to be the next dominant heavyweight. Price's career could have been much different hadn't he fought Thompson.

He beat a 39 year Klitschko without his trainer in his corner going through a lot of personal issues and then after 4 years or something he returns and beats Wilder who's best win is Luiz Ortiz. He now retires at 33 with half the fights Klitschko has. How can he call himself the best ever if he doesn't even want to fight AJ or Usyk? If he wants that honour he needs to be unified champion and defend his belts at least 10 times and clean up the heavyweight division like the Klitschko's did. His statistics simply aren't good enough. Look at Klitschko or a guy like Joe Louis, they have 23 and 25 consecutive title defenses and Klitschko has 27 title defenses in total. Fury has a total of 2 defenses. Wlad held the belts for 12 years in total and went undefeated with those belts for a decade. Fury has gone undefeated with that single belt for 2 years. Look at how long Whyte had to wait for his title shot. 3 years ffs. They just constantly trash talk each other. In the previous era champions would have multiple fights in a year and the best would fight the best. Now everyone is picked carefully to suit the champion. There were only 4 truly good fights in the last 5 years. AJ vs Klitschko was epic and the Fury/Wilder trilogy was quite entertaining, but otherwise no real fighting.
