This is how you flesh out your characters! You give the perfect, can’t-ever-do-any-wrong prince and you give him a terrible moment of weakness that can destroy his entire life, and you take the pírate once hellbent on revenge to advise the prince not to seek revenge. These are perfect arcs.

Of all the individual moments, in the whole series, out of all the characters... I never imagined that Charming would be the one to have the scene that hit so close to home and completely broke me. “... he resisted temptation.” “And it didn’t work! He still died.” “I thought he didn’t fight for us but he did.” “He fought with everything he had... and it wasn’t enough.” “So what if being “Prince Charming” isn’t enough? And I start losing and it keeps going and I lose everything that matters to me?!” “Your father wanted to look you in the eye... do you want to be able to look back?” that destroyed me, hitting insecurities I didn’t even know I had. So yeah, out of the individual scenes (not overall arches)... this is the most powerful for me. It wins. I can’t believe it. 💔

This is one of my very favorite scenes of the whole series and is one of several reasons this episode is one of my favorites. I love the vulnerability David shows. I love how Hook risks himself (David did have a knife and Hook was risking their relationship to some degree) to save David from darkening his soul and living with the repercussions of killing George. I love seeing two men who are friends open up and bond especially after their history. The writing (Charming afraid that he is going to lose all he loves and Hook’s speech about being able to look his father in the eye) and the acting are incredibly powerful. Over three years later and this scene makes me tear up.
@laxxla3 жыл бұрын
Also, the fact that it's Killian, of all people, he's having this moment with makes it all the more powerful. The one person who can truly understand what David is saying and going through. Because it's exactly what happened to HIM, and he doesn't want David to go down that same road.
@NickyHelp3 жыл бұрын
Except The difference is that David never murder anyone’s father and kin out of revenge or out of evil. They are not the same.
@samanthablakeney71533 жыл бұрын
@@NickyHelp True. David was on the edge of going down a dark path. Hook has made many bad choices in response to the bad things that happened to him (his brother’s death turned him to piracy and Milah’s death turned him to seek revenge at all costs). David has had bad things happen, like his Mother’s brutal murder. On the occasion of his learning of George’s involvement in his father’s death, there was a turning point that, had Hook not intervened, he may very well have turned down a dark path. They are very different in their responses, but because of his experiences, Hook did not want David to kill George and darken his soul.
@samanthablakeney71533 жыл бұрын
@@laxxla Looking back on your comment, what thing that happens to David is exactly what happened to Killian? Killian killed his own father. I assume you mean Rumple killing Milah?
@laxxla3 жыл бұрын
@@samanthablakeney7153 I mean that Killian was originally a hero, but he started to spiral after his brother died, and that continued through the loss of Milah. Killian did lose everyone that mattered to him, and knows what it did to HIM, therefore he knows what could happen to David under similar circumstances. He also knows from experience that using the wrong methods to try to hold on to what he does have, or to get revenge, is going to end badly for David. Killian didn't have anyone to pull him back from the edge, but he can do it for David now.

Imagine if Emma had been the one to stop him. I mean, we all know that no matter how angry or protective David is, he could never hurt anyone in front of her.
@katelyntaylor73843 ай бұрын
I don't think it would have carried the same weight. As quite a few people pointed out above, they took Hook, who started the show hellbent on revenge, and had him be the voice against vengeance. It shows how far the character and their camraderie have come. Besides, the entire investigation into who killed David's father, he was purposely going behind Emma's back and keeping her in the dark. David initially sought out Hook because he wanted a pirate okay with breaking rules and in favor of revenge. He got what he needed in a friend talking him down from something he'd regret, someone he trusted enough to be vulnerable with about his weaknesses, someone he could break down in front of, and someone who could help him pick up the pieces. As good as a Daddy Charming moment would be, where he wouldn't kill someone in front of Emma, he also wouldn't have that moment of catharsis.

I know this scene is supposed to really show off how the scars of his childhood and past are still quite fresh for David (Prince Charming) But I love it for a different reason entirely. I love it because when we first met Hook he was selfish, heartless revenge driven using everyone and anyone to get what he wants and couldn't care less who died or got hurt in the process not to mention he didn't care about his own soul let alone anyone else's but in this scene he does everything he can to break through to David to make him see that he is a good man and he would regret this action if he went through with it. It shows how far Hook/Killian has come in such a short span of time and that he is a different person, a different man, a man worthy of Emma which is why it breaks my heart that he spirals into self loathing and such when he learns that he killed David's father.

King George ordered the execution with malice and was never repentant. He ordered the murder of the man he knew to be the biological father of his adopted son. Thirty years years (or 50+ years thinking of the curse) later he was not sorry and was taunting David with the information. Hook was a pirate and thief 30+ years ago. He murdered people who stood in the way of his getting treasure. He has turned his whole life around because of the love of Emma. He was genuinely sorry for what he did. I think it was also easier for David to forgive Hook since he already dealt with the information that he had been murdered. Though I think David would still have forgiven him, it would have been interesting if David had just found out Hook killed his dad right before this scene. That scene would have had Killian sobbing and begging forgiveness. I am glad we got this scene instead because it gave us an awesome acting moment for Josh. Hook has had many dramatic scenes.
@brittanywetherill4723 жыл бұрын
Its not impossible. Its just very very difficult. It requires a lifetime of learning how to care for people who don't deserve it, and working to see good inside of people that seem nothing but bad. Charming had to live all the years he did, do all the brave, kind, difficult things he did, to get to the point where he can see the change in Hook, and forgive. Charming made it look easy, because he has years of experience. Forgiveness is never impossible, LOVE is never impossible. Its just difficult. And worth it.
@NickyHelp3 жыл бұрын
@@brittanywetherill472 Forgiveness is impossible. In reality, murdering your loved ones is unforgivable. It is impossible to forgive King George or other villains like Cora for what she did to Snow and all. Charming hasn't seen everything in his father's killer. The thing is Hook's still a liar and reverts several times. Murderers and assassins don't live forever. Whenever a potential revival comes, that loose end of the murder of Robert will get it's ending, along with other loose ends including the murder of Bae.
@brittanywetherill4723 жыл бұрын
@@NickyHelp Forgiveness is not impossible. Historically proven, is possible. It has been done before, and can be done again. In this particular case, Hook falls into bad habits of lieing, but he never "reverts." He never sees another person's life as just an obstacle in his way. I don't think he even kills anyone past this point, even in self defense (I could be wrong). Becoming a new person is not abut flipping a switch, it is about growth, and failing, and trying again, and in general aiming to be better tomorrow than you were yesterday. Of course we see him fail several times. If he didn't, it wouldn't be real change. I have the feeling you have never seen someone truly change, truly want to be better, that people have hurt you, apologized, and continued to do the same hurtful things. My heart goes out to you. I have been there too. The whole world is not like that. The whole human race is not like that. We all have it in us to want to be better and to work for it. We all have it in us to allow others to do so. We all have it in us to let go of what hurts us and heal. You are right, in that you have to watch those who have hurt you, because thy may not be honest, they may hurt you again. It is also possible for them to keep their word, to try to be better. I hope you find someone who does that for you someday, and you get to see it for yourself. It is one of the most powerful examples of love I know.

That story is still a loose end without an ending. And that’s avenging his father. No villain murders the parents of real heroes and lives. But it can happen in a revival. The only reason it didn’t get it’s ending sooner is because the show got cancelled (for now), all because of the bad writing and bad narrative of the two liars and fools. And you wonder why shows like Epic and Gaston weird never came to pass. For one thing, nobody is going to watch a show where a villain gets away with sins like that.

@@editsbytori That's a lie. King George never hired Hook. Did you not watch the episode properly? King George ordered two different men to kill Robert. But when they were about to, they were interrupted and slayed by Hook and his crew, who had come to Pleasure island for the loot in the Cart that Robert was tied too. Robert though he was saved, but Hook sees him as a witness to his crimes. Robert begs him to spare his life and that his family needs him, but Hook gloated and slashed him through the heart not willing to leave any witnesses and gloated "Dead Men Tell No Tales." Hook had done that himself and was never hired. Loose end and unfinished story without an end. And with that, he left Charming under a lie about his dad and he lied to the former four year old all his life. Go and rewatch.
