I had to download Professor Balakrishnan's lectures on Quantum Mechanics and Classical Physics - just a superb lecturer and communicator. And it's incredible that he delivers his lectures off the cuff and without notes. Seamless. I havent been lucky enough in Australia to be in a class room with a teacher and communicator as brilliant as Prof Balakrishnan.

I have tried a lot in my life to debunk pseudo science and it is not easy. I believed in some too before doing quantum physics when the realisation struck me there are things beyond human comprehension which somehow maths can predict and explain.. At that point I realised I don't need god to explain everything supernatural. Maths can do it too. Very soon I started question all pseudo science and religion and god etc. One solution to remove pseudo science is probably to introduce quantum physics at school level and show students the efficacy of maths and science in explaining beautiful phenomenon. I think they will be far less susceptible to pseudo science in future. 99% look at science as a way to make engines, fly aircrafts but not as a pursuit to unravel natural phenomenon. If that is inculcated at young age maybe we can solve this issue..
@osculocentric
@osculocentric 5 жыл бұрын
I would say one way to remove pseudo science is to make them understand the importance of science. People do not understand how much science has impacted their lives and how it had made their lives so peaceful. From medicines to phones, all has been gifts from science, however we as scientists have never come forward to make people understand the importance of it, and how people take it for granted. Secondly, I feel that common public do not understand the process of science, i.e. peer review etc... I feel it is necessary to show this to general public and compare with other methods of gaining knowledge.
@Achrononmaster
@Achrononmaster 3 жыл бұрын
You do not need "god" to explain anything because appeal to authority is no explanation. You "need" God to create something, without which there is nothing. It's a big difference. This does not tell us what "God" _is,_ which by any reasonable account is an absolute unknowable. I get a kick out of every materialist who thinks a quantum fluctuation is the source of all creation. They have no idea.

Every person even though well educate thinks that what is not achievable by him/her is not achieved by anyone else. Prof. Balki also sadly falls in the same league. Iam pretty sure he has not read any book on Indian Astronomy as well as Astrology as well as Silpa Sastra. Without reading the same as a scientist, how can he comment on the same?

The speech is good, however our institutes (even IITs) are filled with people who believe in Pseudo-Sciences. I can give lots of examples. We even have Homeopathic doctors hired by IITs, or have clubs which support organization such as Art of Living which sell stuff claiming to have magical properties. We need to introspect and include organizations like Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti...into such educational institutes, to include the narrative of rationality.
@Pranav_Bhamidipati
@Pranav_Bhamidipati 4 жыл бұрын
No club should be discouraged from existing unless it is accessory to crime and other illegal affairs. That's unconstitutional in the sense that it violates a fundamental right and is against the concept of freedom and liberty. Believing in pseudo-science is a personal choice and in my opinion, intervention must happen only when it harms the society at large. So, please do not condemn peaceful organisations of pseudo-science believers.
@chetanwa666
@chetanwa666 4 жыл бұрын
@@Pranav_Bhamidipati Well these organizations come to our institutes and ridicule us, our culture of scientific reasoning. Look at the videos of Sadguru on youtube, it is filled with hatred for students who have asked genuine questions, using words like "slammed", "smashed", etc.... There is article on Sri Sri on how he fooled the kids (from iit kanpur) with his oil claiming how his oil when applied topically gives instant strength , and uses a test of Applied Kinesiology (pseudoscience). One vial (30 ml) of it sells for 25 euros. Spreading pseudo science is violence in itself. Selling pills claiming it to be curing coronavirus is a crime against whole humanity. It burns my heart to see that these top tier institutes cant catch the lies of these charlatans and criminals, what will common public do. I would suggest you to start a Rationality club in your institute, just see the hate you will get, compared to an "art of living" club.
@Pranav_Bhamidipati
@Pranav_Bhamidipati 4 жыл бұрын
@@chetanwa666 This reply got longer than I intended. So, please bear with me and patiently read to the end. While I understand your frustration and agony over insults or insensitive comments made by these people, I cannot support the banning of these organizations from campus because there are other people who would not have been offended by it as much as you. Some might even positively embrace it in light of constructive criticism and the institute cannot support one's whims over others'. The best you could do in this scenario is to stay away from their gatherings and meetings. Coming to your observation about Sadhguru's videos and the hate-filled verbs on them, I feel it arises from the "Bhakts" who are fanatic about him and feel vindicated when Sadhguru gives a sensible reply to (apparently) rude questions from these so-called "science literate intellectuals". It doesn't necessarily reflect Sadhguru's attitude towards them-just his fanatic followers' (who manage his social media presence and upload to the KZbin channel). Coming to foolery and trickery, that's the audience's gullibility. I'm sure Sri Sri would not have done it in a way that would leave him open to litigation and liability. So, no point whining about that. We just have to educate people to make rational decisions with careful analysis of the evidence presented. I have the same to say about selling "coronavirus pills". They will always find a way to do publicity that would not leave them liable for the efficacy of their product. Consumers must be responsible and literate. Talking about my institute, it's so ironic that a few months ago, in January I guess(I don't remember correctly), Sri Sri gave a talk by the invitation of the campus Art of Living chapter. He made some comments about us and I paraphrase "You people, on the one hand, claim to be the most brilliant scientific minds in the country, while on the other hand, criticise the ancient practices calling them pseudoscience and strike them off right off the board without even making an attempt to look into the evidence presented. What kind of scientist has a narrow mind? You are not worthy of calling yourselves scientists as long as you are so narrow-minded". It was met with a lot of criticism from the student body to the effect that a group of students drafted and signed a petition addressed to the director of our institute asking for the immediate ban of Sri Sri's entry into the institute and to subsequently ban all pseudo-scientific clubs/organizations that were prevalent on the campus (some of them were very harmless mental peace, yoga and meditation clubs). Of course, I sent them a mail highlighting similar points as in my first reply - tolerance, democracy, yadda yadda... In the end, nothing mattered because our administration did not respond to the petition in any manner. So, indeed, the pseudo-scientific clubs in our institute faced a lot of criticism. About the Rationality club, well, I don't think we need one since we are an institute of science first and anything next (we already have many clubs dealing with rational, scientific disciplines) and I am 100% positive that if any new club was set up, it would not be ridiculed by anybody since we are all intelligible adults who know how to respect each other's personal preferences and keep them out of our professional lives. By the way, if you were curious, my institute is a modest little organization called the Indian Institute of Science with a tiny ~400-acre main campus situated in North Bangalore.
@chetanwa666
@chetanwa666 4 жыл бұрын
@@Pranav_Bhamidipati Well I do understand the "Harm Principle" by John Stuart Mill, regarding the freedom of speech, I have never mentioned banning the organization, but certainly the ones using violent language should be banned. Other than that I hope you are not that gullible to believe that hundreds of channels on KZbin are made up by his genuine fans.They are certainly his PR team. My problem is that the first line of defense against quackery has to be these "elite" institutes, but what we see is even the director at their feet. They are called for launching of rockets. I bet he cant even derive Tsiolkovsky equation with his divine knowledge. Yet have an opinion on everything under the sun. No "science literate intellectual" asked sadguru any offending questions. If he finds questions offensive then he should stay in his ashram. Also I didn't find much resistance, expect in a few universities like NALSAR . I find the universities studying humanities understand the meaning of Science more than the scientists themselves. Well I feel you are wrong in saying a Rationality or a club where like minded and genuinely curious people meet is not needed. Well I have also been a religious person believing in quackery at one point. I have spoken to a few profs who have won National awards and they cant even differentiate between Science and Scientific Temper, on the other hand our Constitution mentions in Article 51 A that it is a fundamental duty of every Indian citizen to inculcate "Scientific Temper".
