Looks like a LGA 775 based system. If you are very lucky you can install a Core 2 Duo, which is not only faster but also consumes less power. Then you can upgrade the memory to 2GB and install a low profile graphics card like the GT210 to get support for newer drivers. After this and a hard drive upgrade (maybe to something like 250GB) it would be ready to be used as a Windows 10 office pc.

I'm baffled on how you get so many fee shipping deals on ebay for these pc, or are these local pick up auctions you win? It's far more likely I find these free or dirt cheap on my local craigs than on Ebay US. US shipping rates kill so many potentially good deals. That's why I've switched from Ebay to the app Mercari. Mercari used to be much better than it is now, but they still offer discounted shipping rates based solely on weight, not box dimensions or distance traveled. They do this for USPS or Fed Ex. Their rates were lower a month or 2 ago until they raised them. But it's still cheaper, especially for heavier items.

Cuzeg Spiked I would suggest CloudReady OS home edition 32bit, as I've gotten it to run on my old ACER Aspire ZG5 with only 1.5GB of ram(max it can take), so this machine with at least 2GB of RAM, and more powerful CPU would not do too bad, it's biggest bottle neck would be the HDD as Chrome/Chromium OS loves to use HDD Swap space hard when it runs out of system RAM, and on a slow HDD it can really hurt performance.
@CommodoreFan646 жыл бұрын
Cuzeg Spiked Just make sure when you do the install to burn the ISO using Chrome's recovery tool, and to use a USB 2.0 flash drive of 8GB or 16GB that's non Sandisk(for whatever reason Neverware's had issues with Sandisk drives, and I've had it happen on official Chrome OS recovery images as well for Chromebooks/Chromebits), and when you install don't link a Google account to the Live USB just log in as a guest add a network either wired, or wireless, then install, and sign into your Google account after the install is finished, and if you want faster updates go into the about Chromium in the settings, and switch to DEV channel, but Neverware says if you really need the computer to work use stable, or Beta channels, as their build does not have powerwash like a normal Chromebook/Chromebiit/Chromebox, and you will need to do a full Live USB install erasing the HDD/SSD storage to get it back if it goes belly up do to unknown glitches. Also this could be some of the older hardware I was using on the 64bit version, but I could not get a 512MB EVGA Nvidia 8800GS GPU to boot on Cloudready on an ASUS board with an AMD Athlon II X2, 4GB of DDR2 800Mhz ram, and a Seagate 7200RPM 250GB HDD, as it would go into a boot loop till I pulled the GPU, and allowed it to boot off the motherboard's onboard N-Force VGA graphics as this was a build I had done sometime back for a family member with not much money that I was trying to keep going for a while longer, so I'm actually in the process of sourcing them a cheap, and cheerful Lenovo laptop to use with Cloudready instead.

Not a bad choice, but I think CloudReady OS would be even better as it's open source Chromium with an easy installer, and update feature to make it a daily computer for basic task, but I would suggest at least 2 GB of RAM no matter what he does with it.
@SuperGojira20016 жыл бұрын
Hm, Chromium I think would be too heavy for a Pentium 4. Honestly the minimum nowadays for web browsing is at least a Core 2 Duo and 2GB of ram.
@CommodoreFan646 жыл бұрын
I have the 32bit version running fairly well on my old ACER Aspire ZG5 with an Intel Celeron & 1.5GB of RAM(max the system can take as 512MB is soldered onto the mobo with only one ram slot). the biggest flaw is the slow HDD(don't feel like taking the system in to bits to upgrade that thing), as Chrome/Chromium OS likes to really use swap space when it runs out of RAM, but otherwise it's the only OS I've ran on that machine where I can watch KZbin videos in 720p without the system melting down, and locking up, but yes I would suggest him bumping the ram to 2GB minimum, and maybe a cheap SSD. I also have the 64bit version of the OS on my work computer with an Athlon II X3, 8GB of DDR2 800Mhz ram, and an AMD R7 240 2GB GPU, and I can't recall the RAM usage every going above 3.5GB of RAM even with 20 tabs open across 2 1080p monitors with 2 of the tabs running 1080p 60hz video content(did it as a test).
@SuperGojira20016 жыл бұрын
Might have to check out CouldReady OS then, sounds pretty cool!
@CommodoreFan646 жыл бұрын
SuperGojira2001 It's not bad for a daily use OS beyond gaming, just make sure you use an 8GB or 16GB USB 2.0 flash drive, and when the installer ask you to sign in with your google account, don't choose the guest option then install. Also to note some GPU's might not work like my work system will boot with an R7 240, but not an R7 250, and another system I was refurbishing for a family member would not boot with a 512mb Nvidia 8800GS, but would on the internal NForce chipset with an AMD Athlon II X2 chip.

EvilTurkeySlices for a system like this you need something like Neverware's Cloud Ready OS home Edition 32bit which is Chromium OS with an easy installer, and updater in a free package. while sluggish I have it running on my old ACER Aspire ZG5 netbook with 1.5GB or ram(max it can take), but with the 64 bit version on my work computer with an old AMD Athlon II X3, 8GB of DDR2 800mhz ram, and an AMD R7 240 2GB GPU, a 250GB Segate HDD, with dual 22in 1080p 60hz monitors, it just screams once it's past the boot stage, barely ever gets hot, or pegs the CPU usage out even running 2 1080p 60hz videos at the same time. Gaming is more or less a no go, but as a basic office work computer that cost me almost nothing I've truly impressed with CloudReady OS. But I will throw note I got AMD R7 240 GPU because it would not boot with the EVGA 512MB Nvidia 8800GS I had in my parts bin, and it's a software issue not hardware as the card does fine in Linux Mint XFCE, and on the forums Neverware says Nvidia, and AMD GPU support is hit or miss.

Hmmm... yes, I remember the Optiplex 280. And the 270 and 260 for that matter. The biggest problems with all these machines was the fact that they used crap caps which used to eventually swell up, taking the system out without much warning (Dell knew about it and extended the warranty to cover the fault, though they would get a little shitty about it when you reported it on occasion - I suspect they got a few too many reports for their liking!) If you get one of these, it's something to watch for. The PSUs were also a bit flaky on occasion - the PSU on the full size machine was nearer to a normal form but was still not quite up to using a standard unit, and the optical drive on those desktop factor machines would occasionally fail where the placing of a CRT on the case caused the connector to pop out - the case lid wasn't quite as strong as it looked! On the upside, I ran an Optiplex 270 (an older variant that wasn't as happy running SATA but did still entertain the use of PS/2 keyboards and mice... meece... mouses) at work for many untroubled years (I got lucky!) before the site went to Windows 7 and all our Optiplexen went bye bye.

This can actually be the prime machine for a SFF sleeper: the power supply is actually a standard SFF size, and the motherboard seem to me like an extended ITX form factor. Get rid of it’s current guts, use a dremmel tool to cut open the I/O shield area, and now you are ready to put in a SFF machine. B350 ITX board + Ryzen 5 + that Radeon Pro WX 2100 you bought or a GTX 1050 Ti + 512GB NVMe SSD + 2TB HDD + 450W SFF power supply. The hyperthreaded CPU can run 1080p vedios provided if it is paired with 945G MCH, and run games up to 20072-8 era, give it pair of 2x2 gigs ram in dual channel mode, win7 ultimate 32 bit, 160-320 GB HDD, a SSD for OS (optional but speeds up virtual ram capacity) and you are good to go... PS- I have a system similar to this with 3ghz p4 ht...

At 3:15 it says that Adobe Photoshop CS6 can only run on Windows 7 or later. That is actually incorrect, Adobe Photoshop CS6 was the last version to support XP, so it should run fine.

I love those old Dells, I wanna get hold of a slightly older version of one of those myself as a sorta retro console PC and pop it under the TV. Think it was the GX150 I was looking at though a couple others had the same design.

I still use a machine very similar to this, using WinXP Home. I have a few bits of older software that I find useful but for some reason won't run under Win8/10. Some of this software has no modern equivalent because the companies that sold it went out of business. Some of it is stuff that is perfectly acceptable for my needs and I don't have any particular desire to purchase the modern equivalent. My rig is remarkably spry for its age, especially after I threw a few bucks for an upgrade from 1 to 4 gb of memory. Of course, as is pointed out in the video, a lot of more modern stuff won't run on this machine, but that's why I have a Win10 box sitting right next to it; both connected to my monitor via a KVM. Amazing to think that old XP box, as 'limited' and 'obsolete' as it is, has enough data processing and storage capability to run MULTIPLE Apollo space missions at once, and I have less than $30 invested in it.

You could probably fit an install of Tiny7 on this beast? You would just have to troubleshoot Tiny7 internet connections, but once you did that, you would have a much updated machine that would meet your needs even more so. I plan to search your other videos to find out the final resolution of your laptop's missing SSD that a "really nice buyer" tried to steal from you. (cough - cough on the "really nice buyer" tag) Thank You for creating and sharing your videos with us. Praise The Lord and Godspeed to you all - Psalm 127:3-5!!

I had a Dimension 8400 (3.4 GHz P4 650 Prescott 2M) back in early 2005 until 2010. It got me through high school and the first two years of college.

I didn't even have to buy my GX260. I just found it laying on the stairs of our apartment building. It works like a charm and after I put in 1gb of ram instead of the original 256, and it goes like a rocket. Unfo not even a low profile fx5200 fits in it. It has a 1.8 P4 and a 20gb HDD.

I have an SFF optiplex 780 or three (from the peak of the BTX days) possibly on the way, and I was planning on dremelling up one of the cases so I could install a standard ITX form factor board in it, From the looks of this the board is mostly standard mATX/ITX form factor, perhaps you could cut out the IO panel and do what l'm planning to do with one of those 780s. Would be an interesting project.

"...built with reliability and longevity in mind..." I used to work on those all the time, I'm not sure about the 280 but the 270 was notorious for having bad capacitors on the motherboard, I had dozens of them reduced to door stops because of it. What I'd do personally with it? Well unless you want to keep it XP to run old games (not necessarily a bad idea) I'd throw Ubuntu Linux on there, it runs much better on older hardware than other O/S and you can use the machine for browsing, bit torrents etc with an operating system that's still supported with updates, not to mention there's tons and tons of free software for it.

eBay is abundant with very cheap Radeon HD 3450 cards that are low profile. The only downside is they generally have the DMS59 connection. Get one of those with an adapter for a total of around $10 with free shipping though, and this turns into a much more suitable Windows XP Retro Gaming PC!

Oh, hey, I've got one of those sitting in the corner of my room. Mine's the mid-tower version, though, so it has a bit more room to work with and a slightly stronger PSU. This one also came with a Radeon x300, which was apparently one of the build-to-order options. The system still works quite well, though the number of things you can do with it is dwindling.

These were really good for dead power supplies and exploding capacitors. Far too much crammed into a tiny box, they just overheat and die. Spent many years running around replacing these in the office as they died one by one.

Dell Optiplex GX280 was a popular PC that we sold in the computer shop I worked at in 2011. I would cram 2GB of RAM and Install Windows XP Pro (what they typically came with) or Install Windows 7 32bit. These PCs can handle Windows 7 but it will use the Microsoft Basic Display Driver as the display chipset isn't compatible with Windows 7. This can be remedied by installing a low profile powerless PCI-E graphics card for about $40. Good little computers for browsing the internet and some light gaming.

the ps2 had 6mb of video memory and it had almost the same graphics and resolution as this 8mb thingy. one thing i dont understand is how my laptop that can run vice city and underground 1 at about 1024x768 med to high settings 30-40 fps struggles with hl1 a lot (30 fps if i stare at the ground and turning on the torch is a big no-no)

Maybe you have the wrong render. i don't know which one you're using but try setting it to different things, my suspicion is that its in software mode and for weaker cpus thats a HUGE no-no try setting it to D3D or Opengl

Hi! I have one of these model Dell computers too. But every time I turn it on, all it does is flash a yellow light on the power button and nothing comes on the screen. Do you know the solution to this cause?

just a random guess .... check it has ram/cpu and that it's seated correctly.

oh well it was a long shot :) ... you could always try getting another similar model and swap the psu to test to see if it's the motherboard. (PS. just had a google sounds like you have a dodgy PSU)

If it's socket 775, the board holds 4 gb of ram (which should have it, since usually the ddr2 was used in 775 socket plates), we could do something with it, and if it brings pci x16, for about 45-60 dollars more You would have a PC for gaming (The type of gaming depends on which components can be updated and how good they are today).
