I ran a 8 valve swap for years, until the block cracked. Wish I did a 16 valve when I made that swap, I think the small amount of extra work would be worth it. Now I’m running a vw idi 1.6th, love the little diesel. Not fast at all, not nearly as much power as the 16v… fuel economy is great and the power it has is perfect for where is use it.

Let's see how long your build would last had terrible experienced with single cam 16v leaking motor oil and engine crack either the head or the block. Now I only kept the 1.6L 8v, great video explaining. Suzuki was not for speed. So far no one has done what I did on a Samurai garage build. Thanks for sharing experiences.

Hi friend! Sorry to hear you had some issues with your 16v, it sounds like the block cracking is a pretty common issue.. I did already have to replace my water pump about 8k miles in, but other than that it is running really good. I plan to put a lot of miles on it this summer so we will see how it goes!

Good video. I'm in the process of finishing my 16V swap and it the small details that take the longest. Like the power steering set-up with AC took a lot of tinkering around. How did you manage to fit the filter box? Did you remove the bracket that goes across from fender to grill?

There's a Brite Orange Samari that goes by couple times a day. I can hear it coming and it sounds like it's doing a Hundred, as it goes by at 50. Now I know why, my motorcycle has about the same HP.😂
@daneast Жыл бұрын
Is this what you meant by following the petroworks instructions? Doesn't seem like much detail. I saw or read somewhere that someone recommended mounting one of the engine mounts to the frame first, but I can't find the source and don't remember which side they said. "Lower entire assembly down into the engine bay. As the frame side mounts get closer to their mounting locations have your help start to align the frame mounts to the frame and start to install the original mount bolts into the frame. The rear passenger side frame mount bolt is hard to get past the mount so it is advisable to start this one first while there is no weight on the mounts. "
@samuraiszn Жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, I am pretty sure the quoted text there, was what I was referring to as instructions. Where it says, "The rear passenger side frame mount bolt is hard to get past the mount so it is advisable to start this one first while there is no weight on the mounts." I am pretty sure I started with the driver side frame mount and that was the part I struggled with. Once I went back and started with passenger side, it was much easier. Lack of instructions has been a very common thing I noticed across the board with support and parts. Usually, a quick phone call or a search across Facebook forums can help resolve most issues/struggles

Do you have power steering? I did a 1.6 16 valve swap several years ago. Now I am in the process of adding power steering. Looks like the filter box sits too deep and is going to interfere with the pump. Did you do anything in particular to accommodate the rather large filter box?
@samuraiszn Жыл бұрын
Hi Rob! That's a great observation. Power steering is definitely next on the list for me, and as you mentioned, yes, the factory 1.6L intake is definitely going to be in the way. There is a chance you could potentially hide it underneath, but it will likely be super tight.

Any thoughts on power/speed difference since making the swap? You sound quite undecided in the video as to whether you can feel any difference. Would love to know considering the time and cost of a swap. Thanks
@samuraiszn9 ай бұрын
Hey Elliot thanks for the comment. There is definitely a solid increase in power/speed/torque. Having fuel injection alone is a treat, not having to assist the car with cold starts etc. It definitely drives a lot more like a 'regular car', however, there are still a few times where I find myself looking for more... Like on long uphill freeway grades and what not. I did hit 90mph on a downhill with stock gearing tho, felt pretty good

@@samuraiszn Thanks for the reply. Just wondering what's left to make it smog legal? Sounds like you did everything needed - do you just need to to take it to a smog referee now? Where you based? @samuraiszn5 ай бұрын
There is a way to get it smog legal, you would need to have it signed off by the state ref. Petroworks in Fallbrook, CA knows all about that stuff and you would need to ask them for the answer because I did not go that route.

hello bro, have you grown tired of the g16b? if you had the chance, would you skip this and maybe get a more powerful unit or would you do the same again? I'm looking to swap and get a 16v or a m13a or a k20 but I am not sure on what to do
@samuraiszn2 ай бұрын
What up! I have not grown tired of it and I would do it again but it really just depends what you are after... The G16B feels like the motor that should have came in these cars, it is a fairly straight forward swap, and it allows you to stay up with traffic a lot better but it really isn't fast. I would call it OEM +, a nice factory style upgrade but still feels and drives like a suzuki and you still retain alot of your original parts. If you want to go fast, do burnouts and rip, go with a K20 or something with a little more than a G16B. I am sure it would feel like a different car if you did and if that is what you are after. There are other swaps and hybrid-style modifications you can do with suzuki stuff, but it all gets a little tricky. If you have more questions feel free to message me on Instagram @samurai.szn

I had terrible experience with Petroworks. Would like to ask you for the person that rebuilt your transmission, Petroworks ruined mine and it needs some work. My last question, do you know where to get an OBD1 scanner ?
@samuraiszn Жыл бұрын
Hey there sorry to hear that you didn't have the best experience with them. I got my transmission from a guy in LA who used to rebuild them but he unfortunately is not around anymore. I have been asking around to see who else rebuilds them and it sounds like our options are super limited.... For OBD1 scanner, I am not sure. Depending on your configuration you be able to make something work. On my setup I just jump two of the ports with a paperclip, then the CEL will flash a certain sequence, and the number of times it flashes will be the code that you'd then need to search on the internet
@jaimea2722 Жыл бұрын
@@samuraiszn Thanks bro. Will keep searching for the transmission. About the OBD1 scanner, seems those disappeared from the face of the Earth ! Saw a couple articles about what you mention with a clip using a small connector that is supposed to be located by the battery. Will try it, I do not see the plug though, perhaps it has been enclosed in the wire plastic cover that is in place. Thanks for your reply !!!

Tried giving Sidetracked a call. Are they usually busy? Tried calling for three days and it just goes straight to voicemail. Can’t find another source for an engine, so this swap might be dead for me before it even started.

Hey Mr. Ghost, I wouldn't give up on it just yet, Steve is a pretty busy guy and a one-man-show.
