My own ah ha discovery was that playing fast is not the same as playing good. In fact, it was often more challenging to play accurately at a slower tempo

I kinda quit for a while… i was to attached to an outcome. The comparison with the masters fueled my impatience. It’s like looking at a mountain seeing the greatest musicians high up in the sky while me on the bottom somewhere 😅. I knew I needed a different approach to music because my old mindset puts me in a place of dispair and procrastination. I just took some time of music and started to focus back on classical music instead until maybe i find the flame fore jazz again… it’s still there i guess but i don’t force it anymore.

couldn't agree more!. I'm strictly amateur (and not that good either), but the best advise I ever got was to play something in all twelve keys. nearly brought me to tears, but taught me lots of music theory. back then as a result I had nearly a dozen Joplin rags memorized. twelve pieces times twelve keys was a lot of practice, which I don't have the energy for any more, but even now if I have trouble fingering something I play that bar or two in all twelve keys and it ends up pretty smooth and flowing.

Hi Josh, There is no such thing as ‘muscle memory’. Our long term memory is called ‘procedural memory, also known as implicit memory. Nice video by the way👍

@@JoshWalshMusic You could try Professor Lauren Stewart a neuroscientist who specialises in music and the mind. She is a keen amateur violinist too. Google her and you should find useful information on how the musical mind and memory works.
