In Michigan we had a brown out in 03' that lasted for 2-3 days for some and up too a week for others. Our power didn't come back for 7, lost water pressure day 1.. had to go live with relatives after two days who had gotten their power back fairly quickly. 2 days of heat and no water drove us out of that house, i'll never forget that.

I have a small Coleman generator that I would run an extension cord down to my breaker box and hook it up to lines 15 + 17 for my well pump which is out in my front yard that's how you get your pump working.

I really have enjoyed the series on your well. My granddad Robb was in the irrigation pump manufacturing and well drilling business in the Texas Panhandle all my life. I spent my summers building submersible and turbine pumps and drilling wells for irrigation so this whole thing brought back a lot of memories and it was interesting to see a small residential well go in. You’re a little submersible pump fascinated me, I wish I could’ve had a better look I’ve never seen one that small with such short stages. Some of my fondest memories as a child are my granddad climbing the sand pipe with a coffee mug from the truck to get us a cool drink of water straight from the well. To this day I’ve never had water that tasted so good, when you talked about how delicious your well water was it made my mouth water and almost brought a small tear to My eye I wish I would’ve known this was coming I probably could have got a pump sponsored for you. It would’ve been such a thrill to see a Robbco pump in your well. In my opinion this has been one of the best video series you have ever done. Thanks for the hard work I enjoyed it

Here is some additional information from a groundwater professor: Groundwater (well water) temperature is the average atmospheric temperature. It doesn't matter where the water comes from, groundwater moves super slow. It moves about 1-100 feet per year. The water levels within the pump pipe will only drain down to the static groundwater levels. It doesn't go down to the bottom of the pump piping. Also, are you planning to place concrete around your well head? It is a good idea to put an impervious surface around the well to make sure you eliminate groundwater contamination. Imagine some type of surface spill (like oil, fecal matter, or urine) running down the side of the well and entering the aquifer. Could be a major source of contamination. Let me know if you have any groundwater questions.

I've had a bison pump for 7 years and it's also pressurized. My house uses the electric pump and when a storm comes we have either the hand pump with a bucket or we can pump up the bladder. It is fairly hard to pump but my well is 275 feet deep. I have not had one problem with it and it has been fantastic.

To anyone who gets a pump like this when after you install the pump make certain to pump some water through it every so often to get the water out of the pump and if your going to use it for potable uses run the pump for a good bit the water in the pipe leading to the head will be full of water that has been in that pipe since you pumped it last

Look where the check valve is on the pump . It is on the nozzle past the actual pump so any water in the pump and well head will drain away .

Exactly what I was thinking Gary. Once this check valve is installed, not only could the discharge line and everything after the check valve freeze in cold weather, but the pump itself would no longer drain back to it's 4 foot below ground level, as there would be no area that air could enter the system, unlike when it's left as an open discharge. The only other problem I see with this system is that unless there is a screen or aerator on the outlet, insects seeking a warm, moist living environment tend to try and crawl inside piping like this. Then they die, causing a bacterial problem in the well potentially. That is why most modern wells that are drilled are required to have a well cap that keeps, insects, vermin, and other surface contaminants like rain or surface water out.

@@PaulA-il7ms if the pump is used without a check valve, as designed, it would offer an entry point for insects, because it's open to atmosphere. Unless, as I said earlier, there was a screen or aerator. Now, when a check valve is installed, it wouldn't allow air into the discharge pipe upstream of the weep hole, causing a vacuum on the pipe. Think of it this way. Put a straw in a glass of water, put your thumb over the top of the straw, making a water tight seal, (like a check valve). Pull the straw out of the glass, what happens? Does the water spill out from the bottom of the straw, even though it is surrounded by, and open to atmosphere? Nope. It stays in the straw, as long as your finger or thumb remains on the straw. This is why I believe, with a check valve left upstream of the weep hole, it will defeat it's purpose, potentially causing a freeze hazard. Hope this helps.

I happen to be the Emergency Management Director in a small town in Connecticut (life long East Coast guy) and after going through several week long power outages, I can tell you water was the number one issue for us. Our Town is all well water with no municipal water and it didn’t take a day before things got heated. This is a great option, even if you have back up power. Very cool. Thanks

We had a Simple Pump and used it to pump water into our pressure tank. It took me 1,000 strokes (I had to add a cheater bar to pump it as I am a petite woman) to get enough water for one load of laundry. We ordered a 5GPM but the distributor sent us a 3GPM. We pulled it out of the well and it's for sale at 1/2 price.

I have a Bison Pump and you can pressurize your in-house system. It also can come with a similar check valve that you have, which I have for my pump. Pumping it is just as easy. The only down side is it really isn't set up to do the electric/solar add-on part. If you would like I can send you a video of mine so everyone can see it for comparison. Of course I'm on the East Coast so I don't know if that will matter to you. ;)

Hi Cody. Thanks so much for your videos. They've got me thinking a lot more about prepping/homesteading to the point where I've already made some changes in my life to become more self-sufficient. Still, it's very difficult living in a more urban area, renting from a landlord. But every little change I make helps somewhat towards the end goal. EDIT: One example... With all the Corona hysteria going on, I realised I didn't need to panic buy anything. I literally have 95% of what I need right here because I focused on stocking up on long-term storage items while everyone else was worrying about buying the latest gadgets. It feels good to be prepared for any eventuality, knowing I can get through it AND help my family at the same time with spare food, water, heating supplies, medical things, homemade high purity alcohol for disinfection, etc.

It is a great installation. Nothing like having your own water. I used to get it free off a hillside when I owned an Inn, it was amazing in whisky and so cold. It was a great party trick in the winter, "let me go and get some fresh water for that".

Percolator well pump system. Lower a large garden hose with a ¼" air hose taped to it. At the bottom end you have a copper "J" tube that is fitted into the air hose and clamped. The other end is "J-ed" into the open end of the larger diameter of the garden hose. The upper end of the garden hose is upright and position so as to allow the output of water to fall into a collection tub and any air to escape. An 12 vdc air pump is attached to supply air. The air BUBBLE rises under a bit of water as the end of the hoses is below the water level of the well. The water rides the bubble up and out into the tub. JUST LIKE A COFFEE POT PERCULATOR ALLOW WATER TORISE ON A STEAM BUBBLE.

I have lived on 4 properties in 3 Provinces and the wells varied from 58' to 120'. The temperature in all of them has been around 40 degrees F. At one place I used the water to run through a radiator to cool my shop.

Did you drill a second weep hole farther down the pipe than the factory weep hole? I've seen it mentioned that it may be a good idea if one lives in very cold areas, so the water can drain out of the pipe a bit farther down to give more insurance as protection from the cold. I'm in Wisconsin also, and we get 20s below zero every winter and 30s below every few years.

Your information on this pump is valuable. You are right about the under ground temperature. You go 4 feet down or about there and all year round the temperature remains at a consistent 50 - 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

I didn't see this mentioned elsewhere. A pressure regulator or relief valve would prevent the young pump apprentce from accidentally over pressurizing the system. Great backup plan.

If the out put of the pump is not going to a system by way of a hose, then a check valve would not be needed. The check valve is there to keep water from being sucked back into the well and pump mechanism possibly contaminating the well. As a note to using a hose to hook up to the house or other system, make sure the hose is clean and sterilized to keep from introducing contaminants to the system.

I grew up on well water, and my parents still use it. It was never potable, it won't kill you but very high alkaline content. It slowly ruins the plumbing in their house. You are VERY blessed to have clean drinkable well water. Clean water is the number 1 thing people take for granted.

A number of years ago we were looking at a property about 40 miles south of Eugene, OR. The house was beautiful but there was Arsenic in the well water. They had installed an anion exchange system and ostensibly the water was safe to drink but we passed on an offer for this reason. Question: When you drill a new potable water well is it mandatory to have it analyzed for possible contaminants and does it have to be retested on a regular basis. And do the look for heavy metals as well as possible organic contamination?

When I saw the first video I wondered how much it would be. I guessed between $500-$1000. Boy, was I wrong? As a plumber, I don't know how many of those things I could sell at that price. That being said they really are selling piece of mind and you really can't put a price on that. It seems to be really well made and the machining looks great.

No hose adapters unless you have a full understanding of how these work. If you, for instance, hook up a hose and drop the end into you horses dirty water trough, when you stop pumping the drain hole will create a siphon and drain the water tank back into the well. I hook up a hose to mine though... just be careful and train your kiddos.

my grandkids and parents moved here to Oregon a long while back, from Florida. My grandson was 15 and he opened up the tap ,took a long drink of water and then opened the cabinet door under the sink and took a look around. Wondered what he was looking for so asked and he said ,wide eyed, " how do you get the water so cold and good, grandma?! ". Florida water is warm, nasty, and been thru the human body two or three times when it comes out of your tap!!! No, just no thanks! Our well water is precious.

The reason I ask when I was a kid I remember my grandpa and dad had work done on our barn well and the plumber poured bleach in the well before capping it and the water had to be run in the barn and house before it could be used for drinking...

Not all well systems include the large bladder tank as described here. That system typically operates with a pressure switch that energizes the pump which operates at full power or off. It is true that the large tank helps by allowing the motor to turn on less often thereby making the motor last longer. An alternative is a pump motor that has the ability to start slowly and the accelerate based on the amount of water required. This approach typically involves a much smaller pressure tank. My current tank is not much bigger than a basketball. The system with the small tank would not benefit much by the pump’s ability to “pressurize” the system. Good video. Thanks.

In latvia near the coast its realy swampy and wet so wells dont need to be that teribly deep, and you can afford to dig some preaty wide wells, so at my home we had a bucket for the need of electricity free water supply and a little pump for the hoeses, and even a second well, aksualy theres so so much water from the second well "not wide more modern like yours" it has an open top and the water just keeps runinng and runinng for years now "we dont have a pump yet for some reason"

I'm reminded of the Gaussian Curve, Normal Distribution, remember that one from school? It's a bell shaped curve with a couple of verticle lines at Standard Deviation(s) that reveals things hold true to this "normal curve". Cory, you are just great and I want you to please remember that MOST of the people who watch your videos are in the vast normal range. There is a small number on the extreme right hand edge of the curve that are exceptionally bright and about the same number on the extreme left hand edge that are dullards, exceptionally non bright and it is these folks who fail to recognize they are their deficiencies that are "experts" in virtually everything including telling you and other professionals how to do things and that you have done things incorrectly. Here in the UK we have a lot of our water tanks in the attic/loft so our systems use gravity to keep the pressure in our systems, maybe if there was somewhere high you could put your tank you could pump directly into the tank and have gravity do the rest

charlie oakman-hall Problem with that here is that in a lot of cases the attics are uninsulated on the roof line and only insulated on the ceiling of the house. Very rarely have I see anything water related in the attics of the US.

Gravity would work but anyone who is accustomed to city water and the higher pressure and flow rate would probably not like it all that much. That is of course assuming the attic was insulated as Kyle B mentioned. Of course a proper pressure tank is about the least expensive major component in a well system so no point in relying on gravity alone.

The bladder tank works with air pressure you pump air pressure into the tank, the air pressure compress the bladder and the pressure pushes the water out, when the pressure is low then the pump turns on

Cody, have you had the water tested at a local lab for purity, minerals, chemicals, and contaminants? As we all know, these things do get in our ground water, and it should be one of the first things you test for. Most can be filtered out, but you first must know if a filter is required. My well is extremely clean, so much so that after over 35 years, I have not had to replace any fixtures in my kitchen or bathrooms. No iron staining, no calcium buildup, and the water is perfect. Still, every few years I take a sample and pay a few dollars to get it tested, because one never knows if a containment has been somehow introduced. I would love to see you do an episode on getting your water tested, and why. Many people who live in cities have no idea this is a regular concern. My well pump went out on me about a month ago and those few days without water kind of sucked. This is definitely a great option. Especially being able to pressurize my system would have been lifesaver.

Anywhere in pump that has water passing thru metal, make sure u fit zinc anodes to clean metal.. otherwise it will have water eroding metal due to electrolysis.

i'm also in Oregon (between Wilsonville and Salem) and have a Simple Pump for the last 7-ish years...our well water starts at 300 ft and lives at 425ft and we hand pump with the simple pump in addition to our daily electricity (it's our back up). takes a full minute to prime but it works really well...you bought the best model (IMHO)

I've had a simple pump for several years with no issues. Runs about 182' ish. My only tiny complaint would be that I was not advised that there is an optional longer pump handle....which yours looks to be. To change out the handle is quite pricey so get it right the first time.

Very cool. So,, am I understanding correctly that it’s not either or solar or hand pump, it’s both? My thought is here in Michigan, there are days we don’t get a ton of sun. So if the battery was not charged enough during the day, it would be cool if you can still pump it by hand as well.

Your ground water will be roughly the same as cave temperatures. That is found by your areas yearly average temperature. And according to the areas around the mountain you mentioned, that is about 41 degrees. Very cool water indeed.

Does the weep hole work with that check valve? Where will the air get in?

I am curious if you could pressurize a gravity fed water tank... say 15 or 20 feet above ground. It would be a lot of pumping, but a sizable tank should keep a house pressurized for a day.
