Number 10: The Roselli Brothers.
The advent of the Internet enabled some of the greatest things to ever exist, but it also made possible numerous scams and all kinds of thefts. One of such is the infamous Roselli Scam.
In the time frame from 1995 to 2000, two online scam artists pulled off something insane. They called themselves the “Roselli Brothers” and, during those five years, they operated in casinos from Nevada, Puerto Rico and New Jersey. And they stole $37 million dollars from them.
The Roselli brothers hired someone who was great with computer hacker and managed to obtain credit information for people with really good credit scores and, within just a couple of months, the Roselli Brothers were able to get credit lines from major casinos, and up the stakes. What happened next is like something from the “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise: by the year 2000, they were playing 100k-bets per hand. After cleaning the casinos out, the Rosellis disappeared. No one could find any trace that would lead to them. The FBI needed additional six month to realize what had happened - nobody had even known that the heist had even occurred! And needless to say, the name Roselli Brothers was just a backdrop, as the real Rosellis had died years ago. To this day, no one knows who the casino scammers were.
Number 9: The Cigarette Scam.
The previous entry was like something out of Ocean’s 11, but this one - this is straight James Bond material right here. And it involved a pack of cigarette - how fitting.
Before we talk about this insane plot, though, take a moment to subscribe to our channel using the buttons below. While you’re there, be sure to like this video and click on that little notification bell, too. That way you’ll always know when we’ve posted new content.
In 1973, at the Casino Deauville in France, a roulette scam took place, and it made the list of the smartest casino scams ever. The set-up is as follows: one of the casino’s dealers was also in charge of the radio signaling. He had come up with a radio transmitter that was a perfect fit for a pack of smokes. But that was just one piece of the puzzle; there was also a receiver, a weightless one, which the dealer had placed inside a roulette ball. Of course, it was the roulette ball from the table he was working at.
The dealer’s brother-in-law played as an unknown casino visitor, and he placed bets at the table. The third member of the gang, the dealer’s sister, used the pack of cigarettes and pressed the transmitter button. Every time the button was pressed, the roulette ball would slide off from its spin and fall into a group of only six numbers that were possible per combination. The roulette ball was 90% accurate, and the team managed to rake in over $5 million in one week. They were eventually caught, not because their scam fell through, but because the dealer’s sister was so good-looking that she caught the attention of the casino staff. After realizing he was always at the table, they became suspicious… But the cigarette scam is still one of the biggest ever.
Number 8: The Contact Lens Scam.
Technology can really help you go a long way - especially if you’re creative.
This scam took place in 2011, when a Frenchman, backed by three Italians, stole little over $80,000 from a casino in Cannes, using a really smart method. The game they played was stud poker; what the Frenchman would do is mark the card decks with special ink the normal eye cannot detect - and then the three Italians wore special kinds of contact lenses. These lenses could notice the marking made on the card decks.
When two substantial winnings took place in the same casino, the staff members became very alert. Right away, they called the police. But once the police came, it took them quite some time to figure what had happened. It was pretty clear, right from the start, that invisible ink was involved, but the police couldn’t prove how the scammers were able to see the ink. After an in-depth investigation, they saw that each of the scammers had those contact lenses. In the end, the scammers all faced long jail sentences, but this has got to be one of the most creative casino scams ever.
Number 7: The Edge Sorting Scam.
Before we get into it, let’s first make sure you know what “edge sorting” really is. It’s a method of memorizing cards in a deck, and using them for running all kinds of shady plans. In order to do this, you have to be good with the cards; I mean, you have to have your “way” with them.

@Adnan Rafique -- You have to think about a casino as entertainment. Risk only as much money as you can AFFORD to lose and take your chances. Have fun playing, and if you win, even better! This is why I don’t gamble. I understand that the odds are stacked in favor of the house. These places would go under if they weren’t. I work way too hard to throw away a week’s/month’s salary on the roll of the dice or turn of the card. It’s simple- if you don’t like the odds, then don’t play. Vegas has enough people willing to do so and won’t miss you!

@@aeromedical6750 Grand larceny isn't funny but the casinos know exactly what limit they can get away with to avoid gambling commission visits . The best you can hope for is that you are a lucky person that gets the rare big pay out as part of a promotion used to draw business. This typically happens on a slot machine or other where the odds are astronomically low targeting the penny pincher players who will use their ATM or credit cards enough to offset the payout. Level two targets the mid range player with bonuses like free well drinks free buffet meals etc these are the guys who might pay for a night or two and order some room service. At level 3 the casino targets higher range players with more lavish extras like premium alcohol and food with lavish extras like spas, message etc at level 4 the" big roller" the house opens the accommodations to free rooms and all the trimmings mentioned even high class hookers provided at no charge. These are often individuals who can take a million and write it off as a expense of doing business some even using it as a business write off lol!!!!!! The Casinos also have many stages of security to protect themselves from pit bosses on the floor to eyes in the sky and its rare when a actual theft is undetected. Hundreds have tried and most fail with a rare exception and even then the casino will track down thieves with strong attitude. Was part of a team that did all the above for a Reno casino and assure you that some try few succeed in cheating and many regret their decision to cheat . Hollywood depicts the robert de niro Movie CAsino roles which did occur but it's so much more discreet that the average player would not see how a casino deals with a cheat. Lets just say cheats dont come back period and leave it at that.

@WSOPisajoke jones - interesting insight on the inter workings of the casino business. I certainly don’t advocate a casino outright cheating anyone and should be severely punished if they are caught at it. That being said, I stand by my original statement. It is HIGHLY unlikely that you are going to hit it big when visiting a casino. Play with what you can afford to lose. If you happen to get lucky enough to come out ahead - icing on the cake.

@@aeromedical6750 I can speak with direct experience of how the Nevada gaming board acts. When the board believes discipline against a gaming license is appropriate the board acts in a prosecutorial capacity, while the commission a 5 member board acts in the judicial capacity to determine if any sanction should be imposed. The Nevada state governor appoints members to a 4 year term and 1 senior member will serve as the boards chairmen. Do casinos get popped for cheating? Yes it does happen but typically the violations involve scams from in house employees who work vulnerabilities. Example 2009 a heel clicker was used to count face cards at blackjack tables and was hidden in a players shoe. Old electronic surveillances missed these clickers and it was even suggested that some casinos were putting ringers( conmen) at the table on purpose defrauding the public. Rules regarding how employees can play at their place of employment were further established and i know some robbed the public blind. The commission imposed some sanctions and it damn near caused a internal war between the commission and the casinos Other common items like a slot machine can be also be adjusted for pay out which some would consider cheating however as long as regulated minimum pay outs are met the one arm bandits operate. As far as big payouts the slots are the best chance and your worst chance at the same time and generate millions in profit . What is of interest as well is the # of colleges that actually teach poker and its influence on the many poker games. Casinos hate these players but no rule prevents these players from playing, however the commission is on top watching very carefully in light of the # of cases where collusion was involved and the casino's responsibilities to the public. As for myself I play a yearly poker tournament at the Atlantis Casino resort spa in Reno offering a $1000 buy in straight up Texas holdem tournament and pay $72 bucks a night for a room which is a deal . You can pay this for a crappy motel 6 type operation stay. The casino offers well drinks and nice food such as jumbo prawns and filet mignon sliders for actual players gambling and their goal is that you have a great time. This casino offers excellent free advice on how much you can afford and has employees whose job is to actually cut off chronic gamblers like alcohol being cut of to those severely intoxicated. The Atmosphere is extremely entertaining and you don't have to go broke to have fun here. The Atlantis makes Vegas look bad and has become a favorite for families that want a vacation not just gamblers. The casino can guide you to other activities as well such as skiing at lake tahoe resorts, visiting historic gold mines were you can pan gold after a horseback ride and other great destinations and fun for the family. I know th Atlantis is legit in every way and goes out of their way to make each trip memorable. As for Las Vegas not a fan of the seedy town its people or visitors which is loaded with drugs and rip off artists and would never go back.

# 3 is an interesting read. Louis Colavecchio was a retired machinist from Rhode Island. When Foxwoods opened it was literally his first casino ever. He got interested in the slot machines and the coins and then tokens they used. As a joke he had the tokens metal analyzed, made similar size and weight coins and tokens. The only way he was caught, besides winning so much and drawing suspicion, was one day or one week the casino did an informal token inventory and found out they had more tokens than they issued! So they realized somebody was putting in fake tokens! Louis got a little crazy and started making bags and boxes of coins, going to different casinos with his car trunk loaded with fake tokens, becoming a high roller, getting comps and suites. He could have quietly made maybe $ 100 K a year and nobody would have ever known.

Anyone who cons a casino deserves my utmost respect. All casinos do is con gamblers, so anyone getting their own back is fine by me. Gambling can be an addiction, and casinos are just taking advantage of people in EXACTLY the same way as a drug dealer does with an addict. While I certainly don't condone anything illegal, legalized gambling is among the many things that perplex me in our society. Then again, I also feel that people should be free to make their own choices in life. They know the consequences before they walk in. It's definitely a double edged sword.

Huh? Big Pharma advertises on TV every day and if the truth were known it would be declared a criminal activity. How is that you ask? People are being "programmed" by commercials for starters... Then consider pricing in the US compared to other countries... then consider 20% or more of big pharma drugs are really placebos... Their is more... So... who decides to walk into a casino? Answer... people that like to gamble... who is responsible for walking into a casino? Is it the casino or the gambler?

There are a lot of comments concerning IVEY. What has not been mentioned is IVEY and the Casino had an arrangement prior to IVEY even playing. 1. Same decks, 2 Same Dealer, 3. IVEY had someone with him that was an expert in edge sorting. 4. His bets had to be a MIN of $5000 a hand, and he had to place several million in the casinos safe as collateral. This whole thing is a case of the casino agreeing to terms set by a high roller to get them into the casino, with the player agreeing to the casinos term of funds and min bets. IVEY simply made the bets, his edge sorting pro did the work.

In Phil Ivey's case, he had negotiated the terms of the game before hand. He requested that a specific deck of cards be used and a dealer of his choice and play for a set amount of time which they agreed to both since he deposited the cash he would play with up front. They figured that regardless of the stipulations that Ivey would still lose but he didn't. They knew that he would edge sort the cards but went alone with it anyway. They must've figured that if he lost , good for the casino. If he won , they'll take him to court claiming he cheated and recoup the money they lost knowing they'd win the lawsuit since the casinos are in business with the governments and have the best lawyers. They must've been really salty that he had swindled them at their own hustle. But it's not like they would've gave him his money back had he lost by saying the game wasn't fair so therefore doesn't count. Ivey beat them for millions and they couldn't take it. So they cry about it to big brother government. Fucking pieces of hippo shit they are!!!

Fact check for your Phil Ivey story - He was not edge sorting. His partner sitting at the table with him was and signaling to him. His partner was an Asian woman who was well trained in edge sorting, Phil does not posses this talent. His contribution to the scam was being able to have the game rules slightly modified to make the game more conducive to reading the edges, this was because of his hi--roller status.

It's a difficult one to explain without giving away the knowledge to someone who is likely to try his techniques. In the 70s when I was about 17 we had a locksmith friend who taught us a number of scams on how to defraud slot machines. From removing a selected rivet so a 6inch length of wire coat hanger could be used to trip the coin insert resulting in free plays as long as you wanted. On other machines by picking the lock on the side of the machine you could access the mechanism that stored your winnings in the bank, again careful maneuvering of a longer piece of wire would short the counter resulting in the bank total increasing rapidly. This was a tricky move though, shorting the counter for more than a second or two resulted in the bank's total reaching an astronomical amount and you'd have to leave quickly before the security caught you. Also waving a length of coat hanger around in the back of a machine full of electrical components and wires led to a few shocking experiences

Nora Die H0e Right, if Ivy cheated, they for sure would have had him charged. But more or less the courts said it was unfair would Ivey did. The brains behind this story was a chubby Asian woman, named Sun. She used Phil as her big player, and the casinos being stupid gave them the keys to the house, the casinos deserved to have their money taken, dumb shits.

20 years ago I visited Australia from New Zealand where I live when I came back I played a slot machine in a bar and put an Australian $1 coin in by mistake but the machine accepted it and gave me credit of $2 for it. The weight of the Australian coin must have weighed the same as our New Zealand coin. The exchange rate was about the same so mate and I organised a mate in Australia to change $20,000 to $1 coins, he had to visit plenty of banks to do it. Then we shipped the coins back home through a relation who worked in freight forwarding company. Once here we hit the bars putting the Aussie coins in to around $500 a machine then got paid out as once machines hit $500 they don't cash out in coins. Operator pays you cash and deletes the credits on the machine back to zero. Only took 2 days to double our money. Lot of work but fun doing it. Just felt sorry for the players after cashing out winnnings and getting Aussie $1 coins not New Zealand $2 ones. Didn't make a fortune but still a scam that we pulled off.

The absolute best scam (until they got caught) was the hollowed-out 3 chip stack of blacks. It was a real $100 chip on top of a hollow short cylinder that looked exactly like 3 $100 chips. The dealer was in on it, and when the player lost a hand, the dealer would collect the hollow stack, put it in his rack and it will 'fill' with 2 other $100 chips. The next time the player won a hand, he'd get paid $300 for the 100 he lost before. All night, playing, getting paid 3 for one - they KILLED. I don't know if they ended up GETTING killed, it WAS back in the day.

All casinos will scam you. It's known that slots are all computerized and don't pay out until they gain a certain percentage. Table games are also a big scam, dealers take classes in how to count cards, trick you and there's even some magician skills they take classes for on high end tables. Seen it , worked in Casinos for over 20years.

Very interesting. As casinos are just legalized criminal businesses, its no wonder people will try to defeat them. When you offer game that are already fixed in the house's favour, do you blame them for trying? Using your brain for observing cards, counting cards and then being banned for that skill...is the criminal act.

You and the casinos are wrong about edge sorting being "a scam". The casino chose to use cards that had anomalies, not the player. The player just took advantage of that fact. This is not a scam, this is an advantage, like card counting, which is also not cheating.

Casinos spend billions of dollars trying to combat scammers. If they are dumb enough to use faulty decks, shame on them. Edge sorting just exposes their weakness. It isn't a scam it just gives certain players an advantage. I personally don't believe that counting cards is a scam either. It's just an advantage that few players have.
