I see mumbai getting bigger as outer regions of mumbai are growing but they are turning more in a residential areas and that's just not enough. The same thing is needed in the country to share the burden according to the population of the region. West and south india is considerably less populated(1/3rd of india's population) but have most of the major cities in our country and hence, we need more cities bigger than mumbai or at least bangalore mostly in northern regions. Skyscrapers and economic success are not always correlated. Although there are a lot of skyscrapers being built in China, many, if not most, of them are being built just to boost GDP numbers artificially. They do not generate any profit and many of them are completely empty or only partly inhabited. All they do is generate more debt into an already enormous debt bomb. The same thing can be seen in other places too, particularly in places like Dubai. Also, many countries just don't have skyscrapers because they would be useless (or because of ridiculous height restrictions), but that doesn't make them any less economically successful. Many European countries are deliberately not building skyscrapers, but I think Germany is more successful that Venezuela, despite the fact that Venezuela has more tall buildings. And don't get me wrong, I love skyscrapers. I hate the stupid height restrictions in Europe and I think skyscrapers are not only good looking, but also (mostly) economically beneficial. But I just wanted to remind you of the fact that many of the skyscrapers you see in China or Dubai, even though they are cool, are still only built for a big fat economic lie.
@luuchoo935 жыл бұрын
While I do agree with your comment, I must disagree about the restrictions in Europe. European cities have legendary architecture styles that might be ruined by the presence of skyscrapers. Take Paris for example, that managed to retain its impressive geometry, diagonals and uniformity... when they built Tour Montpatnasse it became an immediate eyesore to the skyline.. it pops out of nowhere and ruins the style of the city. Skyscrapers can be beautiful, modern and impressive, when they are built correctly and in a fitting place... many European cities are just not meant to have them
@internetuser27215 жыл бұрын
@@luuchoo93 Maybe you're right. I wouldn't want skyscrapers to be built in the historic centers either. But perhaps a high-rise business/residential district outside the old town would be a good idea. At least in my opinion.
@christopherlee39685 жыл бұрын
What you mentioned is true and nobody can dispute that. Skyscrapers in Chinese Tier 2 and 3 cities are usually built in advance of strong demand, a situation similar to residential apartments and hence invited a lot of reports of "Ghost cities". However if building these skyscrapers mean: (1) providing jobs for rural migrants for ensuring social stability; (2) training and employment opportunities to younger engineers, architects and construction managers so that their university trainings do not go into waste; (3) control of office rental which in turn helps to control cost of doing business; (4) more orders for manufacturers of construction plant, equipment and materials to sharpen their skills, techniques and widen their knowledge base, etc. money spend on them are still relatively more worthwhile than quantitative easing by FEB, ECB and BOE for propping up the banks without much fund flowing into the real economy. That is to say what China doing is the lesser of both evils.

Interestingly, Chicago currently boasts 126 skyscrapers but, the city only has a COMBINED TOTAL of 19 buildings which are BOTH under construction AND proposed. This means that; "Within a few years, Toronto will have 157 skyscrapers while Chicago will have 145, bringing Canad's largest city to second place in North America after New York's 284 skyscrapers". No city can copy that. I am from Holland. No real skyscrapers there. My heart also lies in Hong Kong which is an amazing skyscraper city. Still most skyscrapers above 100 meters and above 200 meters. Thank you for producing this. I've some questions that could make for future videos: - The first skyscrapers were built on solid granite foundations. Can we build them anywhere nowadays? Do they have to construct a "bath-tub" foundation whenever they build near water? Are there limits to how close together these foundations can be? How will they cope with sea level rise? Has subsidence occurred despite these efforts, and how is it mitigated? - Is a higher grade of building material required the taller they build? What are the height "bands" for different grades and how does that affect construction cost? How do the economic savings from building upwards change the taller you go? - Earthquake proofing: what methods are used to mitigate the risk of damage / collapse? Are skyscrapers in non-fault zones designed to withstand earth tremors? - What are the challenges to providing service utilities (plumbing, temperature control, secure communications) in tall buildings? - Building maintenance - how to they clean irregular shaped buildings? - Emergency access / escape provisions : what are the regulations, have they changed with time, do they vary by region? After recent disasters, are there any new safety innovations, or ways to evacuate people? Has the structural design of new buildings changed since 9/11 ?

One city that isn’t building the most skyscrapers or the tallest but is still building many new modern buildings is Manchester UK, many building don’t exceed 10-15 floors but many bigger projects have started and are starting to make bigger and bigger buildings, in the next 5 years the tallest building in the city will switch several times

That is impressive for a city in a developed country. But developing nations experience this a lot more. 4 tall building( 10+ floors) in 1990 to over 75 buildings with 20+ floors, 18 120m+ skyscrapers and 39 120m+ skyscrapers currently under construction including a 600m+ skyscraper.

ora et labora a nation where people from across the world accept each other’s differences and live together in a peaceful society with freedom and equality to everyone regardless of race, gender or sexual preference. That’s what the culture would be. Also, Canadian culture today is basically American culture added hockey and maple syrup, minus guns, AND America’s culture is formed and shaped by Europeans, Africans, Hispanic & Jews living together in the same country. So Canadian culture (basically a melting pot) is already formed by different cultures.

Not too surprised at the list being dominated by rapidly growing cities from countries that are undergoing significant economic growth (the Chinese and Indian cities on the list). Melbourne, Toronto and NYC are outliers in that regard, but Toronto and NYC's skyscraper boom is driven by residential demand. Melbourne's is from commercial demand, and that's kinda interesting. Australia has been a developed country for a long time, and Melbourne has been a major city for that entire time, which makes the construction boom happening now kinda weird (like, why now instead of decades ago?). Also, the narrator on this channel confuses me with the Chinese city pronunciations. He gets Chongqing here (ignoring the tones), which is the city whose name most non-Chinese speakers mess up on youtube. But on the hyperloop video on the same channel, almost the entire Chinese segment has their pronunciations botched.

Nice to see some well-deserved light shed on Shenzhen. Due to the inaccessibility of a lot of the documents on shorter skyscrapers (as in the 150-200m range) in China, CTBUH's database isn't quite accurate. Some more accurate estimate of the No. of Completed and Topped Out 150m+ skyscrapers in Shenzhen hits in the high 400s, which shows a gauging difference to the number provided by CTBUH (221 Com and T/O). And as for HK, I think the number could be even more jaw-dropping.

Not really. Hong Kong's construction and building data is pretty well documented, so it is unlikely they are under represented here. However, it is definitely true for most Chinese cities, which I would recon actually takes up all the top ten positions.
