When I was only around two years old and visiting my grandmother in her apartment building at the top floor, I accidentally fell out of the window she left open and I fell 20 feet into the ground with nearly no injury. have you ever heard the one about these two girls? sorry, i don't remember details or anything, but here's basically what happened: a girl (again, i don't remember names or anything) sent out a golden balloon with a note attached saying 'please return to so-and-so'. the girl sent off the balloon, and it landed in a hedge of a farmer's backyard, i think 400-something miles away. the farmer then proceeded to give the balloon to his neighbor, because she had the same exact name as the girl who sent the balloon out in the first place. the two girls decided to meet up. turns out, they are nearly the same age (9 and 10 i think), both brought a guinea pig with a birthmark on their bums to the meet-up, and much more. it was probably the strangest coincidence i've ever heard in my life. seriously, check it out.

I know what story you are referring to, and, while it does seem miraculous, much of the reports surrounding the story search for connections between the two girls, rather than the similarities all just being there. Also, some of the details were smudged a bit so the two girls seemed even more similar. Sorry to be a buzzkill, but the podcast Radiolab had a great segment on why this story isn't as special as it initially seems.

The coincidence of the Titan and titanic were actually no coincidence at all. The titanic had a sister ship called the Olympic which was built with a fatal flaw, so White Star Line the owners of both ships decided instead of spending possibly millions on a costly refit of the ship the decision was made to scuttle the Olympic for the insurance money. But to do this they needed to make it look like an accident. So they swapped the name of two ships and got the idea to sink the newly named Titanic (previously the Olympic) from J. Bruce Ismay's reading of the novel the Titan. All that needed to be done is steer the ship into an iceberg, and the rest is history. But this is all just a theory...No one would ever try to defraud an insurance company back in 1914, would they? Or would they? The telling of that story would be bigger than the movie the Titanic!

A few mistakes on the Futility/Titanic comparison: 1.) Titanic was 882.9 feet long, Titan was 800 feet. 2.) Titanic did not sink at midnight on April 14, she struck the iceberg at 11:40 pm April 14th and did not founder until 2:20 am on the 15th. A 2 hour and 40 minute sinking and the ship was fairly stable as it sank. Titan, on the other hand, sunk in minutes after grounding up on it's iceberg, and capsizing over. No specific time of night is given, and you may be mistaking this for when the Titan in Chapter 3 collides with and slices right through a smaller ship, cutting it in half, and leaves it behind to it's fate. 3.) Titan was not on her maiden voyage. She had at least 3 voyages, perhaps more when she sunk. 4.) Titanic did not have 2,207 passengers. She carried 2,224 passengers and crew the night she sank, 705 survived. Titan on the other hand had 3,000 passengers and crew the night she sank, and only "one boat-load of her people" and "the names of the captain, first officer, boatswain, seven sailors, and one lady passenger as those of the saved". Rowland, the story's hero, saves a child by jumping from the Titan's bridge onto the iceberg and is later picked up for a total of 13 passengers and crew saved. Only one lifeboat launched by Titan compared to 18 launched by Titanic (two more collapsibles floated off before they could be launched). 5.) On life saving equipment, the Titan had one cork jacket per cabin, 24 lifeboats with a capacity for 500, and 20 circular life-buoys. Titanic had life jackets enough for everyone as far as can be told (doesn't do much good in freezing water), and 20 lifeboats with a capacity for 1,178. Titanic also had something that Titan did not, a turbine engine for the center propeller, and Titan did not since that steam technology. Titan also had 19 watertight compartments to Titanic's 16. Interestingly enough, Titan would've survived the Titanic's damage scenario since she could float with any 9 of her compartments flooded while Titanic could float with any 4.
