Ranking Beethoven and Tchaikovsky number 9 literally caused me physical pain, I know it's personal and very subjective but still 😭😭😭

The Beethoven concerto I know from such a special time in my life, when I was 16-17 and hungrily devouring classical music due to a new-found love for it, when I also decided to start playing the violin. It’ll never be the most flashy violin concerto by a long way, but musically it’s so deep and lyrical and beautiful.

Tchaikovsky's violin concerto is my #1. The 3rd movement is absolutely epic and massively virtuosic.....better than the 1st movement IMHO.

I am not a violinist, but my favourite concerto was surprisingly not featured, which is Barber's violin concerto, it's very romantic, very American sounding, and a very hard last movement, or at least that what it sounds like, I also think that the Mozart violin concerti are quite good as well, same with Shostakovich's 1st and Prokofiev's 2nd. And Schumann's violin concerto is unfairly neglected and same with Martinu's 2nd

As a humble music lover my top 3 are: 1. Sibelius. 2. Khachaturian. 3. Mendelssohn. Please tell me I'm not the only one here who loves the Khachaturian.

Khachaturian is an epic concerto from start to finish. What I've noticed is that it is not played that often (at least among violinists)

It is always delicate to make a choice, let alone expressing a difference of opinion with someone else's choice. I feel it however urgent to say that the ranking of Stravinsky, Bruch, and Sibelius do astonish me very much. Not every body would agree with you on that point, and this is an euphemistic statement, to put it gently.

Interesting ! mine would be : 3) Mendelssohn 2) Sibelius 1) Prokofiev 1 I feel like Prokofiev 1 is the closest thing to perfection when it comes to exploring everything a violin has to offer !

It's almost as if he ranked them in reverse order. No shot in the world that those that come after are greatest than Tchaikovsky and Brahms. But I agree if he made the classic list: Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Sibelius, etc. It would be quite a boring video Only thing that I agree in this video is that it shows how underestimated Sibelius is, people generally leave it out of the "Four Great violin concertos" but it's actually better than Bruch, Mendelssohn and Beethoven

Now I do agree the Sibelius and Mendelssohn concertos should be two of the top 3, but where is Elgar? Also MOZART wrote 5 brilliant concertos, plus the sinfonia concertante, yet none of them ranked! What up with that?

I find it hard to believe you included nothing by Paganini. His 1st Violin Concerto is the most beautiful and memorable music I have yet heard come from a violin.

It's a nice list, although my own top 10 would be different. But beyond basic quality criteria, preferences are always subjective. So these types of lists are by definition subjective However, what makes the list pointless are the ratingfigures given. For the sake of clarity, the rating scale from 1 to 10 is a so-called 'interval scale', where each number corresponds to a certain predetermined and objectively measurable score. Those intervals do not have to be the same, so an 8 is not twice as good as a 4. This also means that scores such as 4.5 or 7.5 are not possible. You would essentially use a rating scale of 1 to 20 in that case. Needless to say, composing any music does not lend itself to such an assessment, which makes this list pointless. It would be much better and more interesting to simply make a list of your own preferences and explain the reason for the individual ratings and the order.

oh, this may be it, poor guy, doesn't look too different than many of those voluntary aesthetic surgeries though. "In 1999, Hadelich was severely burned in a fire on his family's farm, causing extensive damage to his upper body and right hand. His concerts were all canceled, he had many reconstructive surgeries, and Hadelich's life suddenly changed."
