As a lance main myself, I have a couple tips and recommendations I'd like to share. 1) For non-knockdown rotation, only use high/low thrust a maximum of two times, never loop high/high/high/cancel thrusts together unless the monster is down or incapacitated (this is especially important for monsters like Rajang and Zinogre). Yes you have the ability to hit three times in a row, but unless the monster can't attack (in a trap, knocked down, etc but some like Rajang can still attack when in a pitfall and shocks don't work) you always want to save the last in the trio for a counter thrust or counter claw. *The reason I say this is because between animations of guarding/attacking/counter stance your shield is down; I have died to damage in this transition more times than any other.* 2) I can't remember if this combo was shown in video - probably was? - but another move to practice in addition to those listed at 3:44 is Power Guard Countering. Put simply, it flows as follows: RT+ B / R2 + O ---> RT + A / R2 + X --> RT + B / R2 + O. It is the same amount of damage as holding the Counter for the full two seconds, but much faster. Additionally you can actually aim it while in Power Guard. 3) Lance VS Savage Deviljho, standing under his head means you have a clear line of sight to his true weakpoint on his chest which may be tempting, but Angry Pickle has an attack especially to counter this *when he lifts his tail and shoots Dragonbreath straight down*. DO NOT PANIC. As soon as you see the attack coming, Guard Dash + Finishing thrust straight towards his tail, ideally twice. Finishing Thrust is important because it gets you out of the way of the Downward Dragon, adding distance, and keeps you from Shield Bashing instead as well as getting you away from the coming stomp while putting you into a good position to Reverse Power Guard Counter the tail, or his face as he turns.

I know this comment is a year old but still, thanks for sharing those tips, that first tip especially. I've been learning almost every weapon (can't get my mind into LBG/Bow as of yet) and lance is really enjoyable to play for me (that's how I beat Raging Brachy on ma second attempt solo cause with LS I got squished hard). Now that I've seen it in writing, I can definitely recall getting hit in transitions so many times to faster more aggressive monsters.

when i tried lance against Savage Jho for better survivability, I quickly switched back to my main weapon which is Charge blade, because it's exactly that downward breath that killed me every time i cart lol. If my dragon mantle isn't on, it's a guaranteed cart

What they want you to believe: Lance is a slow and clunky weapon with really low damage potential. You can turtle up but hunts will take forever. The truth: You can maneuver around a monster effortlessly attacking them where it hurts most. Wound without skipping a beat. You got counters for days and you never have to stop pressuring the monster. NEVER. STOP. ATTACKING. Over all I find the lance to be extremely responsive and reliable with a rewarding combat loop. Not flashy but never fails.

It still is low damage compared to other weapons, sadly :/. I main bow and lance, my hunts on bow are usually 5m diff from lance if not more. Obviously depends on matchups but the difference is really huge.

@@Vazio3 If your hunts have a 5 min difference than you are not that good with the lance. There will absolutely be a difference but 5 minutes is too much.

@@AJDC_5 really depends on the matchup tbf but I won't deny I am a much better bow user than Lance. Just want to point out though that speed runs have a difference of ,2-3min between bow and Lance. 3 min difference is still a lot, considering Lance is harder than bow (imo). When we translate to average play the difference gets larger and larger. The timers only gets closer when the matchup is raw favored really.

Lance is one of the most basic weapon. It give yu better protection (better than SnS and CB) , counter move (like long sword), constant damage (like DS), somehow yu can said mobility too... its DpS not so bad, u can stab enemy body closely even in rage mode. The weakness of lance is no Flashy attack move... its playstyle is so boring but effective. I see alot of people play MHw is new player and prefer using weapon that looks cool... lance is one of. The most boring weapon in MHW.. even iceborne update give counter claw.

That video just shows the potential of this weapon. Coming from a longsword main, the lance is incredibly fun to use. People say LS makes people feel like they are dancing with the monster (which is only a handful, let me tell you.). I have to say after trying the lance, that depiction fits perfectly wotj this tanky weapon. World and Iceborne did so many things right with the Lance. You really cannot compare it to previous incarnations. Clutch claw counter. Guard dash. The oh so satisfying sound of offensive guard activating when you use the guard dash to close the distance, ram that spear into their leg and make them stumble over at your mercy. Have a main weapon, but be open for something new. I am still in the middle of building my own perfect lance set, but I love it. Keep lancing people!

@@wuchanx I rage quited the game anyway xD, gone to ICEBORN and got pissed of by how long soloing monsters is going. And all those Burning and Poison statuses all the time, you need to scheathe your weapon which takes 2 seconds and you need to find a good moment for that, then you need to roll two times or drink antidote, back to monster attack 2-3 hits and you are poisoned again xD. I've gone into a monster firing me 5 times in a row and I got rage to the point I alt+f4 the game and uninstalled it as fast as possible because I wanted to throw monitor out of window. I just got it in my mind WHY I'M PLAYING A GAME WHERE I'M JUST RAGING ALL THE TIME, because of broken monster hitboxes and stupid status mechanics.

Why I should play a game where I'm yelling all the time, because of broken hitboxes (sometimes when I should not get hit I get hit because I saw that monster claw or tail didn't touched me, it was 2-3 meters away, and sometimes when I should get it the monster attack just goes through me, or just movimg me to a different position [not while dodging ofcourse]) and annoying status effects.

I'm happy to say that last time Safi was present, I was forced to level up to Lv 6-7 as a designated aggro-holder in my group (it was our first Safi in general). Being forced to stay safe behind my shield for majority of the time, I had to learn all my opportunities to attack least I would be simply a dead weight (I've almost mastered Guard Dashing thanks to that).

All Things Begin in Lance, and All so End. >: D Fantastic video, absolutely love everything about it. I do have tips to add: When fighting monsters like Safi Jiiva and other monsters with vibe checks, I see a lot of lances trying to sheath their weapon and then running for cover. This is slow. For Safi in particular it is much faster to locate the nearest rock ( generally in the direction you are already facing ) and charge towards it. You don't need to angle around it either, you can simply jump towards it and then thrust backwards while in the air and you will land in relative safety and can begin sharpening. You will not knock down fellow hunters during the Safi Drop either, they gain special flinch free levels during the animation, at least after Safi's blue light appears.

Nice vid! Counter claw to wall slam is my fav. Takes some knowledge of the monster part you will clutch onto (be blocking), stamina management, and map awareness, but feels so good when it works. Much better that lowering a shield and chasing a monster while trying to clutch the head.

I think I’ve been doing pretty okay with Lance in the base game so far… but sometimes my inputs get eaten? Like, sometimes when I try to use the Clutch Claw while unsheathed I end up switching camera targets and doing a Counter Claw instead and it’s super disorienting. Same thing happens to Counter Thrust. Not really sure what to do about it

On level 6, anyone know how to do the strafing Guard Jumps on PC? Going forward is obviously easy, but I am not seeing controls in the top-right that suggest the ability to hop in any direction with the shield up, usually my character just faces that direction and hops without defending themselves.

After just over 2000 uses with the Lance, I can thankfully say I have mastered all of these. Very awesome video. P.S. I especially like to use Lance against Ruiner Nergi. He thinks he can get us with his 2-hit pepega slam and spikes coming off his hand, but we can just Counter Thrust the slam and Leaping Thrust the spikes. Offensive Guard for days.

I finally know why guard dash are so important when I play lance on sunbreak. You can go offensive and defensive just like Ippo did in hajime no ippo with his roll.

Going back and looking at every level I think im comfortably level 9, maybe even level 10? Which, granted, makes sense, I've prolly been playing mh for like 700 hours at this point, and most of that time I've played lance. That being said nergi humbled me the other day, and now I have a score to settle...

Rewatching this after Rise I hope Sunbreak brings back the Perfect Counter Claw as a Switch Skill, it will lose the Tenderizer effect but gain A temporary Crit Buff(the other 2 switch skills already give attack buffs)
