This is a great topic. I remember discussing it with members of ansar ud deen lagos some 30 years ago. I suggested that there had to be a way to own stake in profitable businesses to fund the activities but i know how that could corrupt the system. Now 30 years later i think the volunteerism and scraping for cash allows for a certain purity of purpose that having a lot of cash would not allow for.

We would spend all we have, and even get into debt for the dunya. Yet for the deen, everything is expected to be done “fisabilillah”. What we choose to spend on shows what we value. Footballers earn millions of dollars a year because we value their entertainment. How much do we value our imams, scholars and duaat? Not even as much as our footballers?
