Man, double bass drumming is the most soulcrushing thing ever! The amount of hours you have to put in with very very little progress... absolutely brutal! -__-
@almadaestudios3 жыл бұрын
I know dude! it´s very unforgiving. Worst thing is the more you progress, the more you have to keep your muscle memory in check. I´ve taken a huge break of 9 months, and my endurance has reduced 50%. Well, drumming is almost a sport I guess hahaha
@prod_adrian3 жыл бұрын
@@almadaestudios Oh yes man, so many emotions that get triggered throughout the progress... anger, hate, depression, distress! Sometimes it seems like its not even meant for me to play 200bpm on feet... & at this point of extreme drumming it definitely is like a sport, very demanding! Any tips for me? I can only do 135bpm 8ths seperated and 125bpm both together... i practise everyday with click and various patterns. All full leg motion for now, waiting for clean 140bpm to be playable and then start ankle motion.
@almadaestudios3 жыл бұрын
@@prod_adrian of course, lots of tips! I´m a big advocate of balance being the key for it all, so it begs the first question: how are you sitting? if you lift both your legs, can you balance yourself, or do you immediately fall over?
@prod_adrian3 жыл бұрын
@@almadaestudios I think balance is a big problem for me, thats probably the reason why i have to go slower when playing with both feet together (legs/feet not grounded to floor) than seperated. And for throne position, basically like what Marthyn or James Payne recommend. Pretty far back on the throne, so i can tap with the ankle but also you full leg for drive. I dont fall over but i can also sense its not comfortable for me either (yet). I used to play heeldown when i was a child so the lack of anchor to the ground was a very different feel for me starting the full leg motion. I had like hip flexor muscle soreness the first weeks, because the change of movement. thank you man
@almadaestudios3 жыл бұрын
@@prod_adrian the biggest issue is taking everything with a grain of salt. Everybody is different, so recommendations are always to be taken with care. Not everyone reacts the same to the same type of practice. What I'd recommend for sure is to work on balance. At speeds until 16th notes of 160bpm I wouldn't even worry about hip flexors or whatnot. I'd just go for it, you can go full leg caveman motion easilly. From 175 or so, that's when ankle play has to get involved in order to maintain endurance. In any case,enjoy your practice! As a rule of thumb, I'd do workouts of 10 mins (straight) of a comfortable tempo, 5 mins a bit faster, And 1 minute on a bpm close to your max. Rinse and repeat, the only changes are the bpm, that hopefully keep getting higher and higher. Also remember progression is not achieved daily, sometimes it takes a year for you to notice

Hey bro, how are you? Yes, this actually really can create a couple cool ostinatos. I uploaded to FaceBook a silly exercise based on the first warmup on this video, wich uses it as an ostinato, then hands play 3 against 4 and ultimately become a metric modulation when the snare is added. It´s all goofy and riddled with light mistakes, but I´ll leave u a link in case you want to take a peek, since it´s related to your comment. facebook.com/almada.estudios/videos/1925811277473574/ PS: I really admire Jazz drummers, although I don´t play jazz at all. Cheers and thanx for watching!!

My oh my I like it! Reminds of me of some of some of the stuff I used to do in college. I'm not in this kind of shape anymore... but it'll come. I just recently picked the drums back up. I cannot live without it. I was feeling depressive, nothing was going on in my life and other ventures like photography... and then I just though, fuck, I'm not playing anymore... and I forgot how badly needed this therapy was. There come a time when you can't go back. After 12 years and going through cancer and mental illness... the drums always been by my side...! Anyway thanks bro. Hope we run into each other one day. Hey buddy! I don´t know about the p932, never used them... but if you want to know more about the Demondrive, watch my video where I review them, (just turn the subtitles on because I didn´t spoke english on it)... But long story shot, the demondrives are really good. The p932 is good if it´s going to be your first pedal, but if you´re into getting a pedal for some years, just save up some more money... it´s going to be worth it
@bnrz287 жыл бұрын
Emidio Alexandre thanks for the reply. And we'll I'm looking to try the longboard style pedals and the p932 is cost friendly and as I'm on a budget.. but right now I have a set of dw 5000 which work well but they are a little older and I'm starting to notice the wear on them.
@almadaestudios7 жыл бұрын
Well the only prob I see with the p932 is that the foot board doesn´t have an independent ajuster... but that shouldn´t be a prob to you, since I believe the dw5000 also does not. No big deal there. also - bear in mind that the Pearl longboar is the shortest in the market

@MeytalHead Hey bro all good with you today? First off, thank you very much for commenting, hope u do try the warmup! Well, now for your question: For me these are actually part of a speed gaining routine, because they work on your BALANCE and u need to be well balanced on your seat/throne in order to properly execute some techniques. Once you have the balance down, check out james payne´s "Stone killer" exercises for the feet, they cover alot of ground for speep. Finally, check out Eugene Ryabchenko´s video also about foot speed, he has preety good recomendations about speed/endurance. Cheers bro!

Use it more then. Instead of playing with your right foot, use your left foot. When playing a pattern with a double stroke on the kick, get your left foot involved: play the second or first note. Alternate. After you do both for a few months, it'll become easy and there will no longer be such a thing as a "weak foot."

@almadaestudios Жыл бұрын
Hi Andjelo! great question. First off you need to realize that different drummers have different aproaches, so take what I´m about to say with a grain of salt because it is my opinion only and not a scientific fact. For me ankle motion is the same as dribbling a basketball: you use control and also use the momentum of the beater itself, never losing contact with the footboard of course. All the muscles involved are below the knee, so it´s important to have a good balance in your drum seat, hence these "balance" exercises. Let me know if you need some clarification on this. Have a great day!!
@TvRageOfficial Жыл бұрын
@@almadaestudios Hello Emidio. Thanks for the answer. I saw the adjustment of the chair, as well as trying the warm-ups on this video and it helped a lot. I noticed that my left leg only needs a lot of practicing, especially for the triplets. I tried faster BPM with ankle, and I did it but i cannot keep it for longer time. I have a Mapex double bass drum pedal P980A. But for some reason, and maybe this is ok, it is a really hard pedal. Can it have somthing to do with this because I have not played on other double pedals? Thanks in advance, Andjelo.

Hey man this is awesome, your technique is sick. I'm recently trying to get into the habit of ankle motion, do you have any tutorials on how you go about the technique? My feet naturally swivel at higher tempos, but its sloppy at times and I suck for long stints of single 16ths. Also I got the same pedal, forever messing around with the settings, can't seem to find a comfortable setup. What have you got your pedal setup like? Cheers!
@almadaestudios7 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanx for the comment!! As for ankle motion, just practice the floating technique (also called the "basketball bounce") for long periods of time, on lower, more confortable bpms. Also, practice heel down for some time - in spite of you NOT using heel down on your playing, it helps to strenghten your shin muscles, used for ankle motion. As for my settings I have the pedal on longboard and springs maxed out. These are the only things you really should try, all the other settings depend on wht´s confortable for you. Just don´t keep changing them everyday... it´s important you give it a try for at least a week! Also, try this warmup in the video, it helps, I promiss. ;)

Hey Alex! Glad u liked the video, hope you try the warmup yourself!! Well, yes my heels are up, but the motion is only from the ankles, not the leg. Of course you CAN play ankles and ALWAYS keep your toes stay in touch with the pedal, but I like to use a little bit of swivel as well. What DOES stay in touch with the pedal always, is the ball of my foot (that little lump, right below your toes.) But this is just me, it doesn´t mean it´s the correct way to play, at all. Hello, I'm learning double bass also and I have some troubles. Some days I can play without problem 150-160 bpm, but other days I can play just about 130-140 maximum. I do not know why, but some days I have not so good control at my foots and this happens. I'm playing twice per day 15 minutes without break 134 bpm and every week I increase about 2bpm. Do you think it is a good method or not? What do you suggest to do to reach higher tempos without problems? Could you tell je how you build up speed and if you had similar problems. Thank you for answer, your double bass is really amazing.

Hey dude, first of all thank you so much for watching and commenting the video! Let me ask the important questions first: what technique are you using for 150/160 double bass? I presume it´s full leg, right?
@ja-sl6vt3 жыл бұрын
@@almadaestudios I use something between leg and ankle motion. When I play 120 bpm my legs are moving at all, but about tempos 150 it is just small move with full legs, but ankles are moving much more.
@almadaestudios3 жыл бұрын
@ja So 2 things for me. first i´d say ankle motion should not be involved in speeds lower than 165 bpm, but of course there is no rule. it just feels HARDER to use them than to not use them. second, I´d change up your routine because the 15 min 2 bpm increase wont work forever, once you reach 220 bpms, you will start to hit major brick walls. I´d try this instead: - 5 mins of X bpm -3min of X + 10 bpm -1min of X +20 bpm -30 secs of MAX speed possible where X is a bpm of your choice that you feel you can start with. Let me know how this went!

thanks so much, I will try it. And should I do some special exercises for ankle motion, or should I try it, or just play and don't really think which technique I'm using? Hello Emilio, thanks for great video! I'm definitely will try those )) Some odd question: i do stamina exercises for 5 min, returning to drums after 15 year break. Playing heel up, trying to nail the proper ankle motion.I started to notice that my right foot is actually weaker than my left foot (very weird!) while playing consistent 8th single notes, as well as 16th notes. For example at 165 bpm I don't feel any pressure or discomfort in left foot, but when I switch to right foot after a minute or two I experience a nervous twitching in the leg, as well as different stroke volume while executing this exercise. I manage to play the exercise till the time runs out but it happens at ANY speed, even at 100 bpm. I'm very frustrated about that, as never experienced twitching before break. What can you advise in this case? Thanks in advance, and have a great day!
@almadaestudios Жыл бұрын
Hey brother! I´ve only experienced twitching at lower speeds when I used to ONLY practice faster stuff like 210-220, then when I would go back to slow stuff I would twich by unnecessarlly getting the ankles envolved and botch it up, mainly because my muscle memory was all taken up with the "fast twitching" of higher speeds. Had to go back and re-learn the motions of lower bpms. In your case, at 165 I´m not sure what tecnique you are using but you should (and take this with a grain of salt, it´s just my personal view) only use full leg motion, no ankle involved whatsoever (ankles locked) before you hit 170. If even so there is a twich, I´d check if you´re sitting properly or have proper balance, if not, that can be the culprit. Or just exhaustion settling in, or just being in the failure zone of the exercise (no one can keep going foverer). Let me know how you progress, cheers and have a good weekend!!

Hi Larry, how u doing bro? HOpe all is good man, thanx for watching! Well, the space between my pedals is the minimum possible for me, hence the opened shaft. Less than that, and i´d have to angle my leg "inward" because of the snare between my legs. Anyways - if it feels right to you, there´s no need to change or question it! Cheers, Alex
@larrytate16576 жыл бұрын
Ok yeah I use a 13 inch snare so maybe that’s why too. I have the same pedal but I’m chain drive. I know the direct is preferred by most and not many seem to have my pedal but I found a great deal on it on amazon so I went Chain. I got it new for 289 bucks. It was strange but I’m not complaining. It’s very light and smooth but I think I’m going to stick with it over my Tama speed cobra. Have you tried other pedals yourself before settling on Pearl or?? Thanks for the feed back.
@almadaestudios6 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, what´s up buddy? Believe it or not, even today I was looking at the drive shaft... and there is no way I could even play with it closed, even with a 13 inch snare, so that leads me to believe maybe you sit further from the snare? Anyway, like I said it´s just a curiosity, what matters is how u feel confortable. In response to the pedals thing: I´ve tried almost every pedal out there, except Tricks. What I can say is this: What matters is the FEEL you´re USED TO. Try and emulate the weight, drag and tension you have on your Cobras, but on your demons. I guarantee you´ll like them alot better. Remeber - it´s important to EMULATE, not copy directly ( for example, full spring tension on an Axis is alot more than full tension on cobras, so it´s not about copying the specifics, but the FEEL, it that makes sence). Cheers! -Alex

Hi Jose, all good with you? Thank you for your kind comment about the routine, I really apreciate it! Well about the pedal, good question bro! I setup my drums like they had 2 kick drums, so it really doesn´t matter what kind of pedal you use, lefty or righty, ou where you place the main kick drum, left or right (you can check my playthrough videos so give it a look). Hope that answered your question bro! Hit me up if u need anything!
@JoseMTamez7 жыл бұрын
Oh shit! I just noticed on your play-thru you're a lefty and you use a right double kick pedals using the slave pedal as your main kick. As long as I've been playing I've always used a lefty double pedal and the thought of using righty double pedals the way you do has never occurred to me. Mainly because in the past you couldn't use the slave pedal as your main pedal because there was to much lag and the slave just didn't feel as good as the main pedal. Now days, the pedals are made so good that you can now use the slave as your main, like you do. Especially with Pearl Demon Direct Drive pedal. I have been playing DW9000 double pedals for last four years and about two months ago I bought the Pearl Demon direct drive double pedals and for me, the Pearl Demon direct drive double pedals made a huge difference. Not only are they much better pedals but they cost much less. I thinks its because of the advancements in technology and just how good the double pedals are made today that we can now use the slave as the main pedal. Thanks for posting and bringing this to my attention. This can be come in handy down the road when I'm stuck having to play on a righty kit.
@almadaestudios7 жыл бұрын
Hey josé!! Wow, DW9000 cost more than the Demondrive? Damn... didn´t know that! Oh, and don´t get "stuck" playing a right kit, bro. It´s really good for you at home, to practice full right - it will help you! But at a show, or something big, don´t let anyone tell you "oh u gotta play the kit like it is". no way man. Stand your ground!!! LOOOOL
@JoseMTamez7 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct sir, I will never play on a righty kit at any major show. Now that I think about it, the last time I played on a righty kit it was disastrous and I promised myself to never do that again. So scratch that last remark. I don't know what I was thinking or I was thinking of something else.I just want to say there a lot of bad ass drummers down south and I've seen many of them doing speed metal or just having fast feet. How long did it take you to get up to 195BPM? I just turned 55 and even when I played back in the early days before I stopped playing, I could only get to maybe 140BPM on a good day. You youngsters are very lucky to have social media and the internet. We didn't have any of this back in the 70's, 80's or 90's.I just started playing again 4 years ago and I've learned some new techniques just from watching You Tube videos and I'm up to 160BPM already. But its fucking taken me years practicing off and on to get to 160BPM. Compared to you and most of the guys on You Tube 160 BPM is relatively slow. I just started getting into a regular routine because I think that's the trick. I have noticed some improvement in the last six months already, so I'll keep going.Your doing 195BPM and you're just warming up, WTF! How long did it take you to get to that speed? Thanks for the advice and I'll keep watching. Rock on brother!

Jose, my man! how you doing bro! yes man, Leftys are THE POWER! XD To answer your question - getting to 195bpm was relatively easy and quick, but to be honest with you, now I´m having a bit of a struggle to get past 230 bpm. Well, don´t worry about your age, because in the end, it all boils down to Technique: start using the "floating technique" or "ankle". and by that i don´t mean swivel, just the ankle motion itself, playing from the knees down (mostly) instead of a full legged motion. Hope that kinda helped, let me know if you need anything. OH and yes, you´re absolutely right: keeping a routine is KEY to achieve any type of results!

I am a beginner drummer ( not even a year having a kit), bought myself a twin pedal a week ago. Do you have any exercises for beginners to develop tempo and regularity? I love your playthroughs tho!

@Franciszek Nosal Hi buddy! Thank you for your comment, my friend, hows your evening going? Thanx, I´m really glad you like the videos bro! Well, to answer your question - You can just play the Rhytmic table with you feet (Quarter notes, eight notes, eight note triplets, sixteenth notes, etc) or you can simply play these very same "warmup exercises", since they also use a couple diferent divisions,.. Just slow it down, if you´re beggining, BPM is not important at all. Just make sure you ALWAYS use a metronome! Take care, hit me up if u neeed anything

Franciszek Nosal Keep it slow and this expert will have more guidance but count the notes and ideally use a metronome 1e+d 2e+d 3e+d 4e+d etc etc. Play firm strokes, none of this playing on the nerve nonsense , with each foot. It is a slow process but that is good as it builds your muscles. I used to practice on a wood floor without drums so I could hear when I wasn't playing evenly. My number one tip forget speed and concentrate on playing evenly. As an aside I used to practice with my hands in front of a mirror to play as evenly as possible. Personally I never really found much of a need for double bass but I did go through the motions and used the same principles as I did with my hands. I know a lot of drummers who use them for triplets but my argument to that is just play the triplets. I play rock and punk rather than metal and jazz jam sessions.

Yeah man, the metronome is key. Do the same exercises but at a slower BPM. I wish I could do 195 but I'm at 160 but doing the same routine. This is his warm up routine and he probably plays a lot faster. No wait, I'm sure he plays much faster...lol Also, the metronome is key but practicing relaxed and not tense is also key. When practicing don't use your legs, and do the bounce (like bouncing a basket ball) with your angles at a slow BMP for 2 minutes and work your way up, always staying relaxed. He also uses the swivel motion with his feet/ankles. That will be another technique you will incorporate to play faster later on. One step at a time though. Lastly, take from as many good speed metal drummers as you can but I'll tell you right now, It takes a lot of work and the right technique. Check out Eugene kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3WtiXuVeq2em5o to give you an idea the amount of work Emidio has put into to achieving 195BPM. Stick with it and good luck!
