When I lived in NC, my car was stolen from the gym parking lot. Guess where it was found months later? At a residence in Robeson County. It was partly stripped, and oddly, the firing order of the engine had been swapped around. No charges were ever made, not even for being in possession of stolen property. I followed up with the Sheriff's office for months, and they could not have cared less. Since then I have always thought of Robeson county as the perfect place to take your stolen vehicles. The most dangerous parts of most rural NC towns will be in the government assistance apartment areas, mill villages and trailer parks. These will be the most affordable housing in any area and their are government programs that will assist and/or pay those who qualify to live for almost nothing in the apartments. When textile was king and jobs were plentiful the "mill villages" were dotted with thousands pf little white houses most with a front porch on approx. 1 acre or less of property. These were good homes with good people in them until the jobs left and the mills closed. Many are now in ruins and those that aren't have been bought up cheap by realtors as "fixer-uppers" who rent them out cheaper than nicer modern homes or high end apartments. Trailer parks dot the area as well and the problem there is that there are laws that won't allow a person to move a trailer if they are over a certain age so many sit in trailer communities in need of repair and are purchased cheap left in place and rented out less than nicer homes will rent for. Income levels in these communities is typically less than in more expensive areas and most of these communities do not have strict requirements about what you can and can't do and their are no community fees or memberships to live in the poorer communities so property vales are much lower. Sadly, this invites crime in and the people who commit it. I am not rich but I work and live in a medium level blue collar neighborhood that I have seen in decline for several years because the older folks are dying off and the homes are not kept up. I have a friend though across town who's parents left him a business and he took over and where he lives, there is a community guard house that checks people into the neighborhood, video cameras all over the place and he pays a fee to for all this. His property value is higher than mine and many other poorer sections of town but he has the income level to pay for it. Unfortunately, most folks aren't in his position and even those like myself who work can't afford living in such a neighborhood. Poverty certainly plays a huge role with crime but allot of the problems in rural towns across America stems directly from the job losses going back to the late 80's and early 90's when NAFTA and free-trade opened the door to outsourcing blue collar jobs. The "mill communities" use to be some of the nicest, most well kept neighborhoods anywhere because everyone worked and the housing was affordable. When that left, it all went to crap. So now you have two main areas, lower crime ridden neighborhoods filled with folks living off the government, selling drugs and working low pay jobs sporadically. Or you have the ones like my friend lives in that are nice, well maintained and low crime because most of the people living in them own businesses or have high pay professions and they can afford the private security and protection. Then there are people like me, caught in the middle in whats left of blue collar America in neighborhoods that are struggling to hang on. Our taxes are high and our neighborhoods are closer to the bad areas so it seems that we are constantly under attack. I'll finish by saying that the worst thing that ever happened to America was free-trade because it lower the living standards and buying power of millions of people who use to be the productive staple of our economy.

I like the idea of community putting volunteering hours. I wish the mayor or city officials atleast make it safe for people to be onsite and volunteer. Example One Tree Planted asked for volunteers but they had little to no information on who all are going to be present to plant trees and what kind of ID check have they in place. Makes it difficult esp when going to remote locations. I am from IT sector and have noticed that over the years people have been glued to screen and work hours and schedules have been crazy hectic. In CA we have tirelessly worked in front of our screens under orange skies during wildfires. Looking around at surroundings example state of homelessness - all this isn’t right. I am from India and had grown up seeing homeless people on streets. Ignorance was thinking that government will fix it all or that these people have to work harder. Both of which is nearly 100 percent wrong. Seeing the transition in US in past 20 plus years made me realize how wrong I was to think that we just need to vote and pay taxes; rest of it will be on few govt officials to fix. Leadership needs to expand and civilians should come forward in being part of solution through actual labor more than donations.

@@breez2max I moved to Kings Mountain from Charlotte after 57 years in 2017, I lived in Noda and the taxes doubled so I bought a house in K.M. I love not only the area but the taxes are so much cheaper, in fact my car taxes, water bill and even my power bill was nearly half, I am so happy with the less traffic and more scenery, you really do get a lot more for your money in the smaller towns around Charlotte.

I still live in NC, I live in Wilmington NC and was half expecting Wilmington to be on there. But anyways, I’ve been to half of these towns and I can agree, they are quite run down. With that out of the way I wanted to say this is an AMAZING and fun video I loved watching, I’m 17 and found myself finding this more interesting than normal tv shows. It was honestly really interesting and funny to watch! I love all the effort that went into this video!

I use to have to go to High Point NC for the furniture markets. People rent their homes so I rented from this nice woman. The next morning she came to tell me her boyfriend, a bartender was killed closing the bar the night before 😳. I was like, am I in the twilight zone? That’s when I realized how dangerous some of these places really are. Always kept alert after that in High Point/Greensboro area.

To discuss bad areas in North Carolina you have to talk about generational poverty and lack of opportunity. Unless you were fortunate enough to be born in certain areas you are pretty much screwed. People don't have the money to leave because anywhere they could move would be more expensive than where they are and if they own property it won't sell for enough to buy something in a better place Just takes money they do not have to move on and you have businesses that take advantage of those situations by paying starvation wages which leads to another generation living in poverty. You want to fix these kind of areas pay your workers. Here in Fayetteville the problem is that the factories left leaving mostly service jobs. If it wasn't for the military base it would be worse. The service jobs here in town actually paying more than $8 or $9 an hour would be a good start because people who are barely paying rent in the bad part of town don't spend money in town. The crime also has a lot to do with drug trafficking. We are about half way between Miami and New York right off of the interstate so a lot of drug deals go down here. Do I think it is going to get better? Not really. At this point it is what it is. I don't think the state government has the funds to fix this mess. By the way we have cops on the street, kind of. Saw a bunch of them at Waffle House a while back around lunch time. Try calling them and you hope they might show up in a few hours. Called them when I was robbed back in the 90s and they asked what was stolen over the phone and didn't even show up and was told yeah there have been break ins up and down that street and then nothing. You learn a lot when you are stuck in a shady neighborhood for some time. I got out by getting the worst house in a good neighborhood and putting in the sweat equity. Couldn't afford to go somewhere really nice like a bigger city but this is a decent neighborhood. Recently I have seen some undesirable behavior creeping into this neighborhood as well Lived in Fayetteville since 89 (because of the military - divorced military wife) and it has always been shady. To be honest I felt safer living in New York City.

Oh please such a victim mentality. I grew up with 18 year old parents when I was born and they had nothing bit that was no excuse. I worked hard, studied, read and learned from successful folks I encountered. I played ball and worked, then took out loans for college and now enjoy the fruits of my hard work. Fact is… if you simply finish high school, work a 40 hr work week, and don’t have kids out of wedlock you will be middle class. Look it up.

Myself and my family has all grown up in NC and I can definitely say that a lot of towns would be much better if they had funding to use to enrich the area. Kids would actually have something to do. Schools could be better. There would be more after school programs and more job opportunities if they actually just put some attention into bettering cities.
