"Tetris" should be on this list. It pioneered puzzle games with it's mechanics. Randomized pieces are falling down, which you have totally control over, and have to clear as many rows as possible in different ways. Either you have to arrange these pieces to form an even line or sort them by color or shape with specific amount to clear one row. Without "Tetris" there wouldn't be a "Candy Crush", "Collumns" or "Dr. Mario".

Ocarina of Time is not open world. Also they simply took A Link to the Past and made it work in 3D at a time where 3D games where already a thing. The game is great but there is nothing ground breaking about it. Btw that "open world" structure" as you call it was already established in older Zelda games. @@АлександрТерехов-ж3й it's difficult to say what influenced what exactly, factoring development time. I mean, before GTA3 the predecessors of Rockstar released an open world game on the N64 called Body Harvest. It was very much like ánd unlike GTA3. It had shooter mechanics more akin to Goldeneye (1997), the exploration aspect of Zelda but was very much it's own game. Yet, Body Harvest was released in 1998 whereas OOT was released in the same year. It's much more likely that it was influenced by Super Mario 64.

Dude, it came out 2 full years after Mario 64. 3D games were already established, it was just probably the most polished of its time. That's a great accomplishment for its time but it's not that influential. People are inspired by it because it was a huge hit. Not because it did anything new. Even as a Zelda game, it's the same as the previous games, just in 3D. The original Zelda is a lot more influential than Ocarina. Who cares if Den Hauser was inspired by it? While they are good/fun games, they never really redefined games at all. I can think of maybe two sports games: Tecmo Super Bowl and NBA Jam. Both of those games made their sport easy to pick up and play for anybody.

Halo redefined what FPS could be with its control schemes. All 3D FPS after it adapted the core mechanics of Halo's control scheme. Should be in the Top 10.

The Last of Us was included in the top, but not Ico? Ico is the game to which we owe the creation of The Last of Us, also Ico has influenced The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Uncharted 3, Papo & Yo, Fez, Brothers: A Tale of Sons, Rime, No More Heroes, Assassin’s Creed, Flower, Journey and Halo 4, Let’s add that if souls exist we owe it to Ico since Hidetaka Miyazaki decided to leave his job after playing it and also Ico was one of the first to use bloom lighting effect.

Some games that for me are very influential: - Assassin's Creed, like it or not, i'm not a fan of the franchise but since this game, every open world game mimics some of his mechanics. - Batman Arkham Asylum: the combat system was revolutionary, and many games use it after this game. - Alone in the dark: maybe the most influential survival horror of all time, the franchise never take off, but the first one was really ahead of his time.

Nobody knows alone in the dark garbage. Everyone knows Resident Evil. İt popularized the genre. Alone in the Dark shit 😂😂😂

Good list outside of Dark Souls as NES difficulty was a thing way before this. What are the "innumerable" other games that adapted this style without counting other Souls games?

METAL GEAR THE FIRST TO MAKE A GAME FEEL LIKE A MOVIE

You got Destiny wrong. Destiny was on an expansion model for a long time. It wasn't until FORTNITE popularized the season pass that Bungie and other companies implemented it.

I feel like Sonic the Hedgehog and Telltale Games' The Walking Dead was most influential. Because one popularized 2D platforming with the element of speed, and the other revitalized the weakened adventure game genre.
@domx7zero15711 ай бұрын
Sonic popularized 2D platforming? Never heard of Mario huh? Btw that element of speed you speak of is simply marketing, Mario games actually move faster, which shouldn't matter but you brought it up as a point.

Arkham games, star wars battle front 2, and the force unleashed! I could keep going. Old games are the best!

No Pokemon? The series that made RPGs mainstream and all the catching monster games. Animal Crossing? All the farm simulators. The Last of Us shouldn't been in there. It didn't do anything for games. It was RE4 only not as good. You forced that one in there so the ponies wouldn't cry. Give me a break.

Watchmojo is kidding itself if they think Mario 64 was more influential than Super Mario Bros, aka the game that saved gaming. And from a technical sense, SMB1 popularized the platforming genre and scrolling screens. It’s often regarded as the most-cloned game in gaming history.

The most influential game that got me started as a gamer was definitely DOOM, because of that game I got really good at FPS shooters that came after that like Condemned and Prey. Before that I had played some console games like Super Mario Bros., Pole Position, and Sonic just to name a few, but overall DOOM is what made me a serious gamer.

I might be wrong, but a gameplay style that has disappeared a little is the cover-based shooter, which was probably made popular by Gears of War. I think... it used to be a HUGE share of the market between 2006 and like 2013-ish (whenever the last Mass Effect came out). The dedicated take cover and shoot from cover was pretty much non-existent before Gears of War, and now it's pretty mainstream. I think Quake and Unreal Tournament have places missing on this list a well. Quake had a huge impact on the multiplayer arena shooter genre. Doom had set the groundwork, but Quake really brought it to life. I don't know if it was the first, but I think Devil May Cry set the stage for the style of action hack and slash genre that's used to this day. There is a lot out there. Wouldn't mind seeing a second list put together.

I just realize that, now that you brought it up. It's been a while since I've played a cover based shooter, or any cover based game in general..
@troydenbrum297911 ай бұрын
because the genre is kinda meh, you can just add that ability to any other shooter that isnt based off it entirely@@carlpacquing2575

I'd say Metal Gear Solid had more impact over The Last of Us when it came to storytelling. The PS2 era was when games were beginning to incorporate full fledged movie quality stories.

The original "Legend of Zelda", ya know, gold cartridge, is the most influential for one simple reason... it was the first that had an internal battery allowing the user to save their game! Think about that.. the first to allow a game save!! Where the hell would we be without being able to save games!!?!?!?

Destiny is on this list, but not Super Mario Bros. Yeah, okay, that makes sense.
