Before the apartment building became a staple of city living, there existed just two types of housing in New York City: tenements and townhouses. The first apartment building in the city rose in 1870 at 148 East 18th Street, and was known as the Stuyvesant Apartments.
Though it was demolished in 1959, many of New York’s first apartment buildings are still standing today.

They might as well demolish the last building (Black,Starr & frost), all its original beauty has been obliterated, sad.

Why arbitrarily demolish a still useable building just because you don't like the way it looks?

kind of sad how the first ever apartment building in New York was torn down in 1959. Would have been one thing if it was demolished in the late 1800s or early 1900s, but even by 1959, you think they would have recognized the historical value.

The Dakota for me! Ever since seeing "Rosemary's Baby" which had the Dakota as the fictional Bramford and even though the apartments were just movie sets and after reading Stephen Birmingham's excellent book "Life at the Dakota" I've had a special fondness for the building.

@drpoundsign
@drpoundsign 4 жыл бұрын
I would think that most of them were retrofitted (if need be.) But, remember-these are "modern" apartments-not walkup tenements. Otis invented the elevator in the 19th Century.

I live in the Midwest, but lived briefly in Brooklyn, and for ten years in the NYC area. I looked up the Adam Clayton Powell ave. building under NYC housing violations portal. I knew from the address that it's in Harlem. There are a LOT of violations(!) and it's in the alternative code enforcement program. I saw numerous "roach" issues, but no mice or rats.
