In my opnion, this is the most beautiful and fully optioned out car that Ford ever installed a 427 side oiler in. Driver's side power bucket seat, p.w., AM/FM, power front disc brakes standard equipment, and just listen to this tiger roar. These Galaxies and LTD's with 427 (R) engines, whether in 7 Litre trim or not, should be on this list for fastest cars of 1966. They were big, but not that big, as they all rode upon a 119" wheelbase which is only 3" longer that the GTO.

According to a KZbin video, Motor Trend tested a 1963 Studebaker Avanti with a R2 supercharged engine in July 1962 and found that it could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 8 seconds. The car could also reach 100 miles per hour in 12 seconds after reaching 60 miles per hour. Powered by a supercharged 4.7-liter V8 engine rated at 289 horsepower, the Avanti could reach a top speed of 178 mph (286 kph), a figure that made it the world's fastest production car upon its introduction. Yes, that was more than a Ferrari 250 GTO was capable of at 174 mph

My friend and I took a 455 out of a Buick Electra, and put it in his '64 Skylark and put dual exhaust on it. It would just smoke the heck out of the tires, if you didn't feather the gas pedal, and it was really quick.

In '66 I was driving a 427/425 Corvette. The only thing that bothered me was running into a Cobra. Never saw one. I didn't run it on the track but road tests in the day put its 1/4 mile time in the 12 second bracket. It was a beast. I ordered it with off road exhaust (drove cops crazy) and knock off aluminum wheels. Wish I still had it.

Not a muscle car, but the 1966 full size Chevy with the 425 horsepower 427 was a beast. The 1966 Cyclone GT test car was a heavily tweaked and modified car. It was far from stock. The test car had non-standard 4.11 gears with a Detroit Locker. The 1966 Cyclone GT did come standard with a fiberglass hood though.

These performance numbers are pretty honest... I've seen a lot car claims videos and it was rare for these cars to do better than we see here. I grew up with these cars. a 427 Vette, stock, had a hard time breaking 14's 1/4mi. Ken Miles got a 12.8 in one prepared for Car and Driver. I own all those C&D, SCG, R&T mags from 1960 ish to early 70's.

The 0A1 442 OLDS W30 was not messing around either. The R code Fairlane of 66 was the baddest of any mid 60s offering. I will never forget that being unable to exhale acceleration that car had. The FE even 390/410 cars had the most torque and when geared like a hot rod should be they were surprising.

@@Wilett614 Thunderbolts were 64 Only, if you had one, you know that. We have one here locally, beautiful, fast car, I was speaking of the R code Fairlane, they were fast also, but couldn’t stay with a 375, 396, if you know them you know the HP and torque ratings are the same as the 425 HP version they put in the Corvettes. And the 396 will rev all day long, the 427 Ford, not so much. I love the old Fords as well, had a few myself. I had a 62 Galaxy 2 door post car, 406, 405, 4 speed 4:11 rear, no option car, for its time was very quick. The insurance companies, more than anything else, ruined the muscle car era. The premium could run as much as 5 times the normal rate for a 4-spd muscle car. Of course, the muscle car owner was a big factor in those rates with speeding tickets and wrecks.
