Great video! AKG D5 sounds the best! It catches the deeper part of your voice that other mics missed. Sennheiser E835 sounds more natural, but I like when a voice sounds nice and full - and D5 managed to pull that off perfectly.
@proclaimav41972 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I love this about the AKG. In live sound I tend to lean toward the e835 with multiple vocalists as too much low can muddy up the mix and I end up using a high pass filter anyway. For a soloist with a low voice or for just the bass singer in a group the AKG is a solid choice. Also for spoken word recording and podcasting, it's a good sounding mic.

Greetings Tim. I have been singing through SM58s, in live bands since the late 70's. Today I found three Sennheiser E835s, unused, in the original packaging. They were donated to a local thrift shop. I grabbed all three, at the price of $30.00 each. I shall give them a go this weekend. Your singing was well done.

A great comparison for deeper voiced bluesy vocalists! two mics stood out for me, the SM58 and The Sennhesier E835. I opted for the E835 because the SM58 is definitely bassier but if you've already got a deeper voice, you don't need lower frequencies highlighted and the mid range punch and clarity of the E835 easily won for me. A great test and thank you Proclaim AV!

Thank you, I really enjoyed this test and I feel that I got a lot out of it. Obviously what I hear is also colored by the frequency response of my headphones, but at least your demonstration afforded me the opportunity to hear these mics side by side, which would be difficult to do any other way. In the end I found the Sennheiser most pleasing to my ears, followed by the AKG, SE, and Audix. The Shure may have had the flattest frequency response of any of them, but I found it lacking perhaps for that reason. The Sennheiser seemed to bring out just the right amount of warmth and presence to enhance your very nice voice.

For vocal performances with fuller live bands, I tend to like mics that have slightly more mids and tighter highs (that help as deesser without killing the crispiness). It helps the vocals cut through the mix without much EQing. The Audix would fit this, but for me it was a little too much hi-mids and highs with not enough low-mids presence (bass rolls off sharply). AKG was more the balance I like for vocals, in that respect. The Sennheiser never disappoints. In my experience female performers tend to love it because it reduces some of those nasally frequencies and adds smooth warmth (she'll be happy). I have heard the sE before, and I must say I am impressed with this new-comer. It sounds a lot like the old work-horse Shure, but with less low-end. So proximity and handling noise are much less (which I consider a plus in my book). If you want the closest thing to that bassy podcast/radio sound, than you will like the Shure (and ad a healthy amount of compression to the signal). Nice review.

I like your methodology. However: According to tests published by Neumann (without naming names, unfortunately), a mic’s polar pattern (and therefor its ‘wash’ rejection) changes as a face gets closer to it. As such, the 2’ test is unlikely to be representative of actual use. Comparisons need to be done with a lot of loud noise coming in from all directions.

All decent dynamic mics, thanks for a fine demo. Btw. you sing better that most too but you certainly keep it solemn by reading the bible and singning the national anthem. Kind of inappropriate for those of us who sometimes watch KZbin with no pants on. Oh well... Persiflage aside I own an sE V7 and I am quite happy with that choice. It sounds great and the design with the beveled grille is a nice touch. Very little handling noise too. It has a bad smell though which is still present after a few years. I can also highly recommend Samson Q7 which is a cheaper alternative of comparable quality. They are essentially the same mic other than a slight scoop at 7000hz on the sm58 intended to cut down on some of the harsher high end frequencies that can occur in vocals. The 57 is probably more versatile over all for its applications as an instrument Mic, but for vocals or spoken word, the SM58 is likely better. Keep in mind, both mics have been around for decades, so if the 57 was better, you'd probably would have seen more producers opting to use it over the 58 by now.
