Back in my TS1 days, a british dealer solved this problem by machining a slot in the piston ring instead of moving the ring peg in the piston. (The engine broke down for other reasons before the ring cracked).

It drops into inlet port and cuts a groove in the cylinder wall ..... not good .... re peg so ring runs in a safe position.....
