Strange that this retelling of Beowulf did not do well at the box office despite sequences such as this.

Actually, that's partly taken from a first-hand eyewitness account by Ahmad ibn Fadlan of a Viking funeral in 921AD. No, he didn't do what Antonio Banderas does in the film, but his character is based on him 😉

@GKeeper316 during covid the cops here in Melbourne have absolutely earned the slur of fascist pigs, arresting grandmothers on park benches, arresting pregnant women in their homes in front of her kids for posting on FB, heavy handed tactics with lock down protesters while giving any protests with the right ideology(BLM)a free pass so yeh Vic-Pols reputation is lower than snake shit right now, that being said, I can’t honestly say with a 100% certainty, that everyone of them is a piece of shit sociopath. This is a film that, today, might score woke points by presenting an Islamic protagonist as the hero, and portraying the northern Europeans as barbarians. But whatever the film's flaws (and it has several) a woke agenda wasn't one of them. The relative backwardness of northwestern Europe of the 10th century AD was simply a historical reality. At that time, Islamic civilization was far more advanced, more literate, more cultivated, more educated. The roles were reversed. White, northern Europeans were the primitive "indigenous peoples" who were, at that time, retreating before a more culturally ascendant Islamic civilization. Islamic imperialism stalled a bit during the 8th century, after the Frankish victory at Tours in 732. But it never abated entirely, and the Muslim Ottoman Empire, at its peak, was the most powerful state of its time, still threatening the conquest of Christian Europe as late as the 16th century, arguably even the 17th, with the last Ottoman assault of Vienna in 1683. This _ought_ to put things into proper perspective, and end the notion of white Europeans as somehow uniquely evil and exploitative. Sadly, it won't. People are alike all over the world, and no race is more noble, nor more evil than any other. But that notion isn't fashionable in today's "woke" era.

I am not a history scholar but I thought it was the Arabic culture that was a very advanced culture and the mohamadians who believed that the scholarly knowledge of the age was blasphemous and destroyed the great libraries of Cordoba and Alexandria that housed hundreds of thousands of scrolls of the knowledge of science and astrology that even today we have yet to recover!
