The uniform is amazing, the scenery was spectacular. I agree about the drone shot. Almost made it hard to concentrate on the performance of the gear. Quite suprised by the ball bag.(were there snickers and poor taste jokes about "ball bag" then as there is now? haha) it did seem to work rather well. I liked the flask pocket very much and may see about altering my shooting gear. Thanks for an informative and visually spectacular video.. What a location.

An excellent video again. Thank you. I recall that the Baker loose balls were indeed pre-patched by the Ordnance. Surviving examples are of a thick, coarse fabric cut into a triangular shape. The points were drawn together over the ball and joined by a few threads. The patch was soaked in a mix of linseed oil and beeswax. From evidence in the EIC records. Thank you for the pointer to period correct leatherwork. Is there no end to your talents? Peter.

Thank your for the Video ,and thank you Peter Gosden for info on Pre patched . I am a Hunter who does not dress for a certain Period . I watched closely to see how your uniform functioned . I built a reproduction kit when I was 14 and Hunted with it for decades . .58 cal 2 band Zouave , I hunted white tails with Round balls . .570 was the round ball that was easier to find ,I would grab .562 when I could find them . Load was 80 grain 2ffg Black powder ignited by Musket cap . The 3rd barrel ( Decades ) had a round ball twist . .015-.017 was the thickness of patch . I enjoyed seeing you use a patch folded over to get the . 022 thickness . Pre patched to me meant a Ball in the loading block . Thank you for showing me something else and explaining Pre patched balls . My 80 grain load did blow plenty of still burning powder out of a longer barrel , shooting it over snow showed how much powder remained . My main enemy was moisture , Deer were my comrades . Great stuff !
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. The patch was not folded. Have a look at the "Testing for Accuracy" video. It's the same material used there. Unburnt powder is a bit of a red herring... rather the stuff that comes out the barrel that looks like powder is a "product of combustion..." We had an interesting discussion on that very subject over on the BMF... www.tapatalk.com/groups/britishmilitariaforums/some-night-firing-t17398.html
@markcantemail8018
@markcantemail8018 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing out patch was no folded . And I am glad you mentioned the red herring effect . I hunted for years with a too heavy powder charge By choice . I would see the unburnt powder on the snow and wondered how much was ( ash ) is not the right word . I stuck with that load knowing you can only push a ball so fast . Like I tried to convey I did not shoot for historical accuracy , I was Hunting Whitetail . Patch thickness was important because I had an Odd Ball size to work around . Greased Doe skin is something I never tried . I looked at some of your other videos , Great stuff ! Thanx

A Sharpe-ly dressed presentation :D It's interesting to note how long the process of patching and ramming the ball is, I've always thought that maybe a rifleman would fumble a bit more under fire or stress. Also the shako looks like it would present a much taller target to the enemy, sitting behind low cover would have been difficult haha~
@britishmuzzleloaders

To a degree... but if you take it in the context of a Napoleonic battle, not that much of impact really.... have a look at the Waterloo 200th anniversary re-enactment from 2015 to get a sense of how little the "camouflage" impacted things...

@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 6 жыл бұрын
Baker ramrods were intended to be used as shown. The large end does not fit down the barrel and is intended to be used to allow for the forcing of the ball into the barrel with the palm of the hand. Cheers.

britishmuzzleloaders Very interesting, obviously I don't know my Baker Rifles ha It seems the Baker ramrod is faster than say an American 1861 Springfield where there is a need to turn the ramrod. I think that feature should have caught on and been used in other muzzle loaders.

@britishmuzzleloaders 6 жыл бұрын
The drill involved holding the rifle between the legs as shown (when standing) and pushing with the hand.. Rifle Muskets of the 1850s and 60s were too long for that kind of motion. Also, they don't require the same kind of force to push the bullet into the barrel.

the rifles, were a light infantry type of regiment (like the jägers in Germany or the tirailleurs in France) whose occupations were scouting, foraging and skirmishing and no, the skirmisher is a soldier whose job is to harass enemy units and cover the flanks and rear of the main body of troops from enemy skirmishers, they are also used to attack sentry posts and disturb logistic lines the sniper role is one of scouting and eliminations of high value targets (such as officers) from long distances, often out of detection range by the use of camouflage they also operate differently, skirmisher type units works in battalion engaged in loose order, making use of the covers of the battlefield to protect from returning fire and keep the enemy pinned by use of intermittent fire, while snipers operate alone or in small teams (usually two: a spotter and a shooter) and try to keep their presence unknown from the enemy as long as possible

I have read that one duty of the Riflemen was to take out officers. You have to remember the British, Portuguese Cazadores, and Jäger used rifled Arms. Napoleon and non-rifle officers, hated the Baker Rifle since it was slow to reload, 2 rounds per minute compared to 3 for smoothbored arms. There was no distinction of special operations outside general terms, ex. Light or regular infantry. Most regiments gained there specialties through actions, like the Coldstream Guards and Connaught Rangers just to name a few. Also, most officers did not like the killing of other officers, since they were "Gentleman" aka from wealthy families. At least thats some of information i have gotten from research.

flint lock , why would you think an American Long Rifle would be slower to load? I use a wood block that holds the patched balls which is authentic and speeds up the loading. I'm surprised that they didn't use paper cartridges with a patched ball

Dammit, now I feel compelled to watch even more of your videos and maybe even to subscribe and I don't even know what brought me here. Great to see this video. Serving in a Rifle Regiment and a big history and firearms buff, this has been the one weapon I've always wanted. I was about to ask you where you were able to acquire it, a little annoyed you managed to get it from the Rifle Shoppe. Almost 10 years, and I'm still waiting on the Rifle I ordered >:|
