what does the "D" of the 3d stand for?
@penniesshillings Жыл бұрын
Great question. It comes from the Latin "denarius", which was the smallest denomination coin in Rome. It was adopted by Britain, then later by us as a British colony.

Absolute min R130. It's 80% silver. Can go up to around R300 when in unc. Graded, up to R2000, in high MS grade.

Another interesting video, thanks. I wasn't expecting the number 4 to be altered into a 1, but kind of obvious when you see it. I had to google how the nick-name tickey came about, from telephone kiosk and the price of a phone call. Could you give myself and your viewers an idea of the silver value at the start and when (I presume it changed to Cupro-nickel) and what you else could buy for a tickey at that time, perhaps a bar of chocolate?
@penniesshillings2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter... Thank you, what a great idea! The tickey was one of the most circulated coins. It warrants an entire video on its own.

I have a 1925 3 pence with the protea in the middle of the coin in front and saying South Africa and Zuid Africa and on the other side of the coin is saying Georgivs V Imperator and showing his face, where can I go to have it authenticated and evaluated?
@penniesshillings2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason. That's a special coin. Just over 359k were minted (both the wreath and Protea devices of which the wreath is rarer). The quality of the coin in critical here. If you have an uncirculated specimen, you're looking at R5k+, if it's graded (say MS63), you can easily fork out R20k for such a coin. Sadly, in poorer condition these are obtainable, fetching anything from R100 upwards. A nice find.

@@penniesshillings Hi, thank you for replying back to me, I stay in East London in South Africa, do you know if there is a place to evaluate this 3 pence coin i have got?

@@penniesshillings Hi, the second oldest coin that I have is, on the front of the coin has a palm tree on one side of the palm tree has 50 and on the other side has Ces(1927)at the bottom it is saying Congo Belge, on the back of the coin it has a person looking left and on the left side it is saying Albert Roi and on the right side it is saying Des Belges, I thought I ask you if you know anything about this coin, if there is a lot and if it has any value?
@penniesshillings2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, I think this is a Congo coin while under Belgian colonial rule. I don't know anything about it, sorry. I suspect it is not worth a whole lot, but I cannot really comment on it. In terms of evaluating a coin, the easiest is to take some good pictures of it and post it on a FB group such as the SACCG. They have over 10k members and the vast majority are passionate coin collectors. You'll get a fair, market-related evaluation and offers should you wish to sell. I have not sold through them yet, but bought numerous coins (some worth quite a bit) through the group. Just be careful and make sure the person is an established account. Good luck!

@penniesshillings2 жыл бұрын
I'm going to need more than that... Which, denomination, wear, etc. If you have a 1937 raw tickey and the condition is excellent, you should be able to get R200+ (there was about 3.5M minted). If the quality drops, then the value drops. A poor quality will be worth bullion value, R15 tops.
