We decided it was time to put the 1947 Ford Super Deluxe Business Coupe (or is it a 1946) up on the hoist and the only word to describe what we found is pathetic. The missing mounts are minor compared to what we just found
Remember, it was advertised as "rust free, original, one repaint, safety certified, no need to spend anymore cash on this beauty."

I remember the seller saying the car had been for sale for a while due to buyers not liking the colour of the interiors upholstery. I think it was still for sale because potential buyers had taken the time to inspect the underside and body of the car and found it needed significant repairs.

Well Chad, I'm an auto mechanic, and I get very upset with my customers that buy cars without putting it on a lift first. As my dad would say, if the seller won't let you take it to a mechanic to look over, don't buy it. I won't even give an exhaust repair quote without putting it on the lift. Everything looks different on the lift.

There is no hole in the frame is a clue to what and how that is for. The L bracket has a hard rubber pad that supports the running boards. A center bolt fastens the rubber bushing to the bracket and the running board sits firmly on top of the rubber pad. Had you consulted with someone who knows, you wouldn’t have to assume or keep guessing. This is straight forward for those of us who have knowledge in these areas .

And most likely NOT certifiable for safety purposes But THAT is not the point. The fact is that you paid some twenty thousand plus dollars for the car and couldn't be bothered to ask for it to be driven to the closest lift for further inspection. The biggest issue here is , Chad ultimately bought the car and drove it ( problem free ) all the way home .to Nova Scotia . If any of you think he is going to tear this down and restore / resto-mod this car to the highest level of anything he has ever built ( and go on a long road trip with license plates on it ) , you are sadly going to be disappointed . . Some of you can condemn the vendor all you want but , Jolene and Chad were not held at gunpoint to buy this car .

I was shocked when Chad purchased this vehicle with little more than a cursory look at it. In watching many car build and restoration shows I have watched as they throughly examined every vehicle prior to puchasing them. To include wallowing in mud and worse to verify the sellers statements in regards to the intended purchase. One of the tells for me as regards a problem was when just prior to puchase Chad turned to Jolene and asked if she liked the car, her response was; 'If you do, I do'. After three plus years of watching Chad and Jolene interact it seemed a bit strange that she was not more specific when answering. Chad messed up. Plain and simple. All the whining in the world does not relieve him of the responsibilty of not doing due diligence before purchasing this car. 'It was to close to the wall'. 'How was I to see this, that and the other thing under the car'. Give me a break. You are a professional. I've seen you look, look, and look again before doling out cash. 'Let The Buyer Beware', is the foundational position from which to start the examination of a potential purchase. Just please stop the whining!

@@mritron7649It is obvious that this seller was being less then forthcoming from the beginning of their discussion. And as it went on the little details, such as the way the vehicle was conveniently parked in a way to inhibit a detailed examination As well as nuances in the conversation that should have been triggers. Particularly in the purchasing of vintage vehicles sadly a buyer has to assume that there will be discoveries that the seller will not reveal. They then will claim ignorance of the basis whatever that discovery or the less then truthful advertisement for the sale excluded or embellished. It's was Chad's responsibility to thoroughly examine the vehicle, top to bottom, front to back before purchase. Chad let himself and Jolene down by being flippant in the why he handlec this situation. I have never seen a vehicle purchased by Chad or other similar You Tubers were they didn't get a good look at the undercarriage. The mount that started the downward spiral of discoveries was 6" underneath the vehicle. Chad just needs to accept responsibility for a poorly executed purchase and move on. The whining is a bit much, and is about to run me off. He is even making reference to the situation as he starts the new project.

Nope, that is not a running board as you are not able to stand on it as can be done on earlier cars. Running boards are quite promenant, this is just a sill. Just imagine, you have been ripped off by a fellow Canadian. What you have is 'Caveat Emptor' (let the buyer beware). I do not know how much you paid for it, but surely you would move the car so you could put a jack under it and do your due diligence. For someone with your experience, it really is your own fault. Most pre war cars had running broads. After war they moved the body out over the running broads. But most of car manufactures use the frames designs from the pre war cars. If you falsely inspect and put the cert stickers on windshield..you Lose your license, can be fined up to $10,000 and if vehicle has an accident due to faulty inspection you could also be held liable for that too. Hi Chad and jolleen watching your video of the underneath assessment of the car, I feel you were completely justified in saying it like it is. That car is unstable when cornering on the road, because when the car leans on a bend the stress is all on the side with the mount that's fixed the other side has no stress because it's not attached to the car. Potentially dangerous. Contact the owner and ask for payment towards repair, or legal action will be served. This will damage the reputation of the seller of the car, and the M. O. T TESTER, fined for wrongly issuing a certificate, if he has any common sense he will comply or ruin the reputation of two people's lively hood s. Respect.

I would have made a B-line to get my money back. Chad and Jolene probably got one-way tickets based on the phone calls to the owner and the "rust free and certified " add prior to leaving. Totally agree with Chad the certification and rust free on the car was misleading, but also agree that a proper thorough inspection should have been done before taking the car and upon that inspection gone from there as to negotiate a lower price or walk away. Chad was in the dilemma of believing Larry also as he has been in the car game for along time and being a car appraiser as well. Chad and Jolene spent a lot of money just to get there but Larry did offer money back which would have left Chad and Jolene to find their way home again. I can also see Chad,s point of selling the car As Is with a lower price there would not have been a problem. The car looks nice and i am sure Chad and Jolene can bring it up to scratch once again. In Australia we call it buyer beware.

I bought an older car much the same way you did in this video. It was a California car and body rust was not an issue. But believe me it had plenty of other issues. It was my fault for not inspecting MUCH closer the interior and running gear, including the transmission. I was able to save the car, after much work and cost, but I was so disgusted I sold it. The person who bought it got a good deal and was happy. I did not want a phone call like this buyer had to make. I, of course lost a significant amount of money. It was a lesson WELL learned. I will NOT buy any used car without a thorough inspection. Eleven years ago I bought a used Lexus in 'very' nice condition from a dealer. Because of my previous experience, I bought the extended warranty. The car, with 54k, was an anomaly from Lexus and had some major mechanical issues. They (Lexus) completely fixed everything that was wrong and I ended up with virtually a new car. I just dread buying a car and have not done so for some years now. All the best. I understand your pain.

KZbin is full of videos of old cars that look pretty but are horror shows on the hoist. Incredible mistake. Everybody is human - I once bought a secondhand Toyota Hilux from a Holden dealer in Burnie Tasmania, the dealer ticked a box saying 'no warranty' and in my rush I let it slip. Two weeks later the vehicle was off the road with catastrophic diesel engine failure. My dad, a senior automotive engineer all his life was offered an apparently pristine late model Mercedes by a neighbor, a week later the air-conditioning compressor blew taking out the radiator, condensor & lots of other expensive gear. It can happen to any of us in a moment of weakness.

Chaddy, He did say, "that you were the one that should have this car". Check the tape! If a couple of people looked at it and didn't pick it up, that was your first indication that something was awry . If it isn't 1947, why didn't the Motor Vehicles Branch pick up on that? If the car came across the Border from the US, the K22 form should have been checked and verified that it is what it is. Consequently, the Canadian and the Ontario Governments let you down on the registration of this car. The serial number should be located on the left front frame horn so you can verify the serial number and year it was made.

I do accept that there are less than honest sellers. However, someone with your knowledge must accept your own failure for not doing a proper inspection.
