Hot out of the mailbox, I just received this 1959 Gillette FatBoy today and it's time to shave with it for the first time. It's in great shape, so I sanitized it, scrubbed it up a little and did a tiny adjustment on one of the blade guards. How well it shaves will determine whether or not I keep this and give away the revamped 1960 model, or keep that one and give this 1959 away.
Either way, one of these is going to one of you out there in KZbin land. Stay tuned for that.
Let's shave!

I found a rough looking F3 in my Dad's stuff after he passed in 2005. It was laying in a drawer for 17 years and just last month I sent it off to Razor Emporium and now it's like new and it's my daily shaver.

I just got given my grandfather's 1960 fatboy today. He's still around but gave up wet shaving in the 80s and didn't know I was into it until this week since I'm an on and off shaver that will keep a beard for a year at a time.

I found my dad's E4 about a year ago. I cleaned it and the case up and put it back in a drawer. I didn't know they had any value until I did a Google image search. Yesterday day, I stopped in a thrift/junk store. It was cluttered with stuff, and the stuff was everywhere. I was just scanning over everything in a hurry because I never find anything good, lol. I did good though first I found a hand carved pewter goblet , then a Vintage IRC resistor box. Looking down as I went, my eyes went across a Gillette case. I picked it up and couldn't believe it. It was another E4 in pretty good shape. I rolled it over, looking for a price, and couldn't believe it. Someone didn't know anything about Razors. It was priced for $10... I made my way to the cashier, paid and out the I went. Now I have two E4's and a Gem Micromatic

The 1959 Fatboy is my birth year razor and I just recently bought it at a Antique store that had just recently arrived(lucked out). I really like it also and shaves OK, I think for what ever reason it is a little smoother than my Slim 1962 H1 razor. It could be that the blade rides in a more curved enclosed chamber when the winged doors are closed? Great razor regardless and it was like new when cleaned up also.

I also have a F2 1960 second quarter,Gillette Fatboy. I live in England and was very lucky to win it on Ebay as you say they are rare here. I use Steradent tablets (Denture tablets kills 99.9% of bacteria) to help clean them up, clean with a tooth brush with ant bacteria dishwashing soap. Then finish with surgical spirit(I think you call it rubbing alcohol). Like yours look great.

Great attitude to include all your subs in the giveaways. Very well done, fair to all of us besides I'm a European citizen but the American subs must deserve to enter in the contest too. Hello SL glad I heard you mention boiling as a sanitizing method as I was an RN for many years and one method we used for actually sterilizing surgical instruments was boiling in a special machine nowadays of course it is always autoclaved (high pressure steam) as I was getting pretty confused by the many different ways I have seen on KZbin of doing this and didn't or wouldn't trust just scrubbing and Barbiciding razors to make sure there was no infectious material left behind. I now have two Fatboys and two Slims although the two Slims and one Fatboy are still in the mail but am going to give the Fatboy I have already (revamped for a charity sale) a run out this afternoon. All in all I enjoyed your spiel on this gear it was most informative as you you are are especially for those of us down under in Australia. :D
@SinatraLennon
@SinatraLennon 5 жыл бұрын
Ah, yes...the autoclave. I’ve been aware of that machine but didn’t know that it was steam under pressure. Yeah, boiling seemed to me to be an easy and effective way to kill any germs, etc. and I don’t have Barbicide or enough rubbing alcohol to dunk it. I hope that you didn’t have to pay too much for your vintage razors. I hear that they can be pretty dear down in your neck of the woods. After filming today’s video I actually bought another FatBoy for $22 on eBay. I must be stopped!

Hi Brian, another great one, thanks! Many like the early Fatboys more, because they are more „serviceable“ since they have service notches in the retainer cap, which is un-screwable vs. the crimped caps of the later models. I like the earlier ones a bit more as well, because of that and because they have the thinner black band below the adjuster ring. Already looking forward to your Friday video! Greetings, Dan.

You certainly are on a Fatboy spree these days , nice collection! as a fun fact, just today i managed to repair a black beauty adjustable using Captain Murphy 's method of disassembly. To reassemble the razor - which is not covered by any video on youtube i decided to trim the knob's lenght by about 2 cm using dremmel tool (just to fit the retainer cap). Thing works superb and i consider myself scoring a "Super-84" - another European unobtainium cheers !

New to the scene, been shaving with my Rockwell 6C for the last 6 months or so. Got my Fatboy a couple days ago, got it cleaned up and sterilized, and other than the chunk of skin that floated up big enough to make soup out of all went well. First shave tonight. Part of it's probably from listening to everyone wax eloquently about what a great razor it is, but I have to admit seem to be a mighty fine shave with a lot less irritation and I usually have. Got a Flair tip about the same time and will be acquiring a Slim shortly and I'm looking forward to comparing those shaves to the Fatboy.

I like The Fat Boy much better than the Rockwell. No messing around changing plates, I like the TTO much better than a two or three piece razor, and I like the nickel finish much better then chrome. Here we are in 2024 and at 72 years of age I shave with a 1962 Gillette Slim Adjustable using high quality super sharp "Feather" blades. Get amazing close shaves while using imported artisan shaving cream from London. Let go of those expensive cartridge razors and step back in time with an old version razor. Plus, today's double edge blades are far superior to cartridge blades and better than blades made back in the 40s, 50's, 60s and 70s. Instead of several bucks for a throw away cartridge I pay between 25 cents and 40 cents for a quality DE blade depending on the brand and if I buy in bulk or not. I get superior shaves at far less expense.

From what I have read the 59 fatboy is more popular simply because the service notches on the bottom cap where removed in 1960 so only quarter 1 and a very few quarter 2 1960s have the notches to disassemble the razor without special tools.

Before Stahly I was using Shake Sharp razor,that thing was a jedi sword specialty with persona or feather's,I still use Sharp when I grow like a week long whiskers)) it goes through it like there is nothing in front of it. SinatraLennon Hello, Sinatra, Here's my report on Fatboy. I have been shaving with a DE Saftey razor for three weeks now. My first razor was a Nobelisk, which is basically identical to the Bigfoot razor. I also ordered a range of blades to find my blade. My favourite was and still is the Feather. But I always had razor burn on my chin and neck. Since you always raved about the Fatboy in your videos, it was clear I also need one. On eBay I bought a Fatboy and a Slim. Both I polished today first with toothpaste and brush, then boiled in water for 10 minutes and then soaked in Barbercide for 30 minutes. Now both look like new. First I tried the Fatboy. I couldn't believe it, this difference to the Nobelisk (Bigfoot) is gigantic. These are not two different worlds, but universes. With the Fatboy I immediately found the right angle to shave. I shaved the face on 7 and the chin and neck on 3. Super soft, super smooth, no shaving burn. I can absolutely understand why you are so enthusiastic about the Fatboy. I hope mine will last many decades. Next, I'm going to pob out the Slim Adjustable. Certainly it will be as good as the Fatboy. Thank you for infecting me with the Fatboy Virus. Greetings from Germany Christian.

How often to you change blades? That is, how many shaves do you get from one blade? I feel like you're always opening a new Feather blade, but I'm sure I'm mistaken. How long did you boil the new Fatboy? Did you just put it in a small pot and stick it on the stove? I've got a Slim Adjustable that's kind of gunky (when you twist it, it doesn't feel smooth) that I think a bath would help it. Have a great rest of you week!

I usually get 4 or 5 shaves out of one Feather. I boiled it for about 3 minutes or so. Just a guess. It was a full rolling boil, so it should have killed all germs, etc. Dunk that Slim in a boiling bath and see if it loosens up!
@odysseusjak
@odysseusjak 5 жыл бұрын
@@SinatraLennon Well, I boiled it for about 5 minutes. About half way through I put a little Dawn liquid soap in the rolling boil. There was a VISIBLE yellow-ish, oily substance on the surface. Once it finished, I let it drip dry and then sprayed a wee bit of WD-40 in all the moving parts. It's MUCH better now. Thanks for the tip!

Great that you have no probs in the US getting fatboys, been trying to find one here in the uk for a while but the prices are sky high and to purchase from the US anything over 32 British pounds vat and tax has to be paid on top.

Great shave, and nice collection of Fatboy razors. After watching your videos, I got the same brush from West Coast Shaving. It works really well and is one of my favorite brushes now. Thanks for using it in your videos, otherwise I never would have known what a great brush it is. I am intrigued by the cool gold ring on your right hand, that I always notice you wearing. Is it a college fraternity ring?
@SinatraLennon

I love that brush too. The nice folks at West Coast Shaving were kind enough to send it to me a while back. That’s my college ring from the university I attended way back when. My Dad has always worn one from the same college, so I followed in his footsteps.

Get you a Rockwell 2C from Rockwell razors and go to Stirling soaps website (Stirlingsoap.com) and get some soap samples and one of their brushes. Or just go to their website and get a starter set. Watch videos & you should love it. Oh, feather blades are very sharp! Try some persona blue or get a sampler pack.
@SinatraLennon

I agree with Austin. Get whatever Rockwell you can afford. They are great razors. I also second the Stirling Soaps recommendation. Thirdly, get a synthetic brush. Check my description for a link to the one I use. I use solely Feather blades for my daily shave. Very sharp and affordable.

@@SinatraLennon Well thanks sir, their boar brush is only 9.95 USD. I don't remember how much the synthetics cost.
