This was how we snuck/sneaked an electronic game into class in 1982 - and now you can bring one into your business meetings because Casio has reissued their Number Invaders game calculator.
UPDATE - In the game if you shoot two numbers in succession that add up to 10 then the invader appears - the invader is worth more points.
The last two minutes are my usual outro. If the proportion of new content to existing outro is unacceptable to you - here is an alternative version with a quicker outro. ;-) • The 1980's Maths Teach...

I'm still bitter that my middle school insisted that we learn how card catalogs worked because we "couldn't expect computers to do everything," and yet I have never even used such a system in my adult life, as they were already dead by the time I was learning about them.

In the 1980's the pinnacle of computational power was the (by then) 5 year old CRAY-1 Supercomputer. 80 MFLOPS raw computational speed. Today's Galaxy S5 has a comparable raw computational "power" of 364 GFLOPS (the Tekra ARM-1 196 core K1 chip). By comparison today's Smartphones can comfortably out-compute the IBM Deep Blue that beat Garry Kasparov in the late 1990's. - www.phonearena.com/news/A-modern-smartphone-or-a-vintage-supercomputer-which-is-more-powerful_id57149

I bet it being on their watches is one of the reasons for the simplistic control scheme - you could play it then with a finger and thumb gripping each side of the screen and pushing a button each. A bit like the ever-so-fancy Tetris watch my brother had in the 90s (and the only computer game my mother has ever played at length - she got a bit addicted to it) which pared both the display and the controls down to the bare minimums... two buttons on each side of the actual watch body - left, right, rotate (clockwise only) and drop...

mspenrice: Yes, simplicity is the key, as so often in life. I wonder if anyone actually knows who came up with Number Invaders. With hindsight they deserve some recognition; I certainly couldn't think up another game you could cram onto a calculator watch in the 80s that was actually fun and addictive to play.

Ditto. My mate across the street had this and the watch. I had a VIC20 then a C64. Where did we get the time? I also had a full physical/active life and yet spent hours on things like this, typing in games code from magazines and trying to set speed records on the Rubik's Cube (and mini).

You need at least a 12 segment display for a truely readable alphabet. Honestly I wonder if that would have been cheaper than a custom 7 segment. Edit: If you are curious: www.ohijamn.com/covers/12-Segment%20Display.png 12 segment displays are a thing of beauty :)

OMG! When I was in 'Intermediate School' (years 7 & 8, or in my case 1980 & 81) in New Zealand, this was the biggest thing going. I never had one but a kid used to rent his out for $2 for a weekend. We used to call the 'n' thing the 'Mothership'. Each time you erased 2 numbers that equalled 10, you would get one. So that added a other level of skill, requiring you to erase numbers quickly while also making sure they added up to 10. Kids that were really good at it would have a whole bunch of 'motherships' on the screen at once. On top of that, they were worth more points than the ordinary numbers. As the game when on, and you reached higher levels, the numbers that you had to delete moved faster and faster, making it quite hard. Thanks for posting this.
@trascyjaac534
@trascyjaac534 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's right. Any order you want, hopefully zapping 2 numbers that add up to 10. As above, this will produce the 'n' symbol or 'mothership'.

It was great for it's time, I have fond memories. I remember the big achievement was to 'clock it.' In other words to score more points than the game could display. This usually meant several hours of full on, dedicated play - something I never achieved. It's my one big regrets in life (not really!). Levels 8 and 9 were the worst, the numbers came at you so fast! Lots of fun though.
@ShellstaTube
@ShellstaTube 6 жыл бұрын
My mate 'clocked' it. I seem to recall it was at 1 million. My high score was in the late 800 thousands. Took 4-5 hours. My memory is sketchy ... But recall it got faster, in cycles, but slowed down at certain milestones.

Ive always loved casio brand electronics. I had a casio color graph calculator and a databank calculator watch. If i remeber correctly they had a databank watch that had an eye on it that you used with software on your pc and programmed the information into the computer then it comnunicated by flashing a special series of barcodes on the screen that the watch could read and translate into information you could then view on the watch. Hmmm smart watch? Different protocol but that is wireless infomation transmission there. Casio is one of the most underappreciated tech companies out there. There stuff works and is durable. Im sure if i still had the color graph, it would work just fine. And it was half the price that a competetive ti product was going for. Slightly smaller screen, but easier programming and it had three colors on the lcd display. Loved it.

I still have the GCE Space-N-Counter that I got for my 8th birthday in 1982. It has a simple 4 function calculator on one side and a windowed sliding cover on the other. Sliding the cover over the calculator keys would reveal a tiny LCD screen, miniature 4 way joystick and a fire button. It was a simple fixed display that used different combinations of dots, diamonds and chevron "spaceship" shapes to play three different games. Sliding the cover back would return it to a completely innocent looking calculator. I don't know how common they were as I've never seen another one like it.

This brings me back... I have never seen this calculator myself, but i vividly remember the digital watches with the built in melodies that everyone seemed to have somewhere around 1980 when i went to school, they were very popular for a while and then suddenly was gone. There seems to be at least one in that catalogue, number 17.

I had the Casio MG-880 which I think was the original version of the calculator that had this game on it (without solar). Actually it had three modes - Calc, Melody and Game. In Melody, it played a different tone for each number key (including the comma) you pressed, and a short "Chip" for other keys. Back then Casio had a line of calculators with special functions... for instance, one with an alarm clock. The most extreme one was actually the VL-1 keyboard which then evolved into a full line of musical keyboards (without built-in calculators). That was in the heyday of LCD games and VFD handhelds with Casio also having a few of those out, just before home computers and video game consoles became affordable.

Exactly my experience of this calculator in the early 1980s. I too was a bit disappointed (though not surprised) there no graphics for the game, but I still loved playing it, especially once I discovered you could make it produce the 'n' symbol by zapping two consecutive numbers that added up to 10. You got a fun melodic trill as a reward and a bigger score. I still have mine, which I bought from W H Smith in 1981 for £10.95, pristine, working, and in its box. The MG-880 started me off collecting the things as a teenager, and I have about 120 now, mostly from that period. I also got the calculator-watch with the same game, which I used to play during hymn singing in assembly...

I think I was too young for that game. My older siblings were in school still during the early '80s, and in our schools even a basic calculator was cheating. We were not allowed to use calculators until 7th grade. My teacher in 6th grade did teach us how to use basic calculators though. In 8th grade, you really needed a scientific calculator. They still were pricey at that time. I mostly use a basic calculator now for finances, but I still keep a scientific calculator around for certain other tasks. Yeah, I do have a smart phone with basic and scientific calculator apps on it, but I just prefer the simple experience of picking up a calculator for getting my numbers crunched.

That's cool. This thing is from way before my time, so I'd never even heard of it. Gunpei Yokoi was on a train one day in 1979 when he saw a bored businessman fiddling with a calculator to pass the time, which inspired him to create Nintendo's Game and Watch, which later led to the Game Boy. Of course, the day that he was on that train was the year before this calculator first came out (so it couldn't have been one of these that the businessman was playing with), but it's funny to think that two different people in the same small country had the same basic idea around the same time, but they had nothing to do with each other.

I had the calculator watch version of this. As you say, the game is surprisingly good when you get into it. I loved that watch, but the resin strap went the way of all of them and started cracking, eventually failing after about 3 years. I remember going into Dixons with my mum and asking to see the Casio calculator game watch. They insisted they didn't have one, so we had to buy a copy of ETI or whatever to show the sales droid that it really did do that. Such a shame that Casio didn't continue developing the calculator watches after the CFX400 and the databank / IR remote ones. Casio stuff always felt "right" to use.

This would have never gotten by in my math classes. Back in the 80's, in my school, our school system was VERY stick in the mud and obsessed with "show us your work on the page" as far as math was concerned. Calculators weren't allowed in our schools at all, even in our advanced math classes. We had to do all our damn calculations in our head and on paper, showing our work as we did it in these big, long, calculations. If a kid was caught with a calculator watch, the teacher would make him take it off for the class. Nowadays, though, calculators are allowed in ALL math classes and even REQUIRED in some. They don't care about the "show us your work" principle, so much as long as the kid knows how to get the right answer (this is according to my step mom, who's a teacher). And they teach math so differently (IE, the new method is to teach kids to do many of the simple calculations in their head instead of on paper now, where we would have to write out everything.) So, things have changed a LOT since I took math in the 80's.

Extra points are scored the closer it is to your "base" when it is shot down; so not only you need to add numbers so it ends with multiples of 10 in order to get you a "n" monster. You can easily earn a lot of points by shooting the number at the last possible moment during the slower levels

This seems a lot like a game on a Snoopy Calculator I had as a child, there it was called "Tens Stadium", but instead of aiming and firing, the numbers came from the right and you had to type in the correct number that (Added to it) would result in 10...

I had that casio calculator game wgen I was a kid on mu calculator. I snuck that past my mom, she didnt see the part about a game being on there lol. I rather enjoyed that game when I was a kid but there were not really any other calculator games out there in 92-82. God, I am old!! So many things I had when I was a kid that I wished I saved cause of their value now. Its good to see this oddity being sold again, though I suspect it will stay high priced since the demand for it will be rather low. Kids new calculators are wifi and all that jazz most likely and are in 1080p for all I know, lol! Anyway, good show chap!

Wow you had to live with these primitive devices in the 80s? I had a TI-83 Plus at school. Z80 cpu clocked at 6 MHz, 32 kB RAM, 512 kB Flash memory. That was a beast! Completely programmable in TI’s own language, C or assembler. Additionally there are already a huge amount of games on the internet for it. It even allowed a cable to be used for multiplayer gaming!
