Parts have all finally arrived and I'm able to get this back together and running again...hopefully a fresh piston/rings/hone will be enough to get it running right.

I had a 73’ TS185 back in the day. One of the best bikes I ever owned. I would probably still have it except it was stolen back in 1988. Cool video! Brings me back. I would’ve replaced the crank seals when you had the engine tore down. Then there wouldn’t be no second guessing.

Thank you! I took the gamble on the crank seals because with this engine you need to split the case to get to the right side one…the one that sucks oil when it’s bad. I think I dodged a bullet with it because it did t smoke excessively and the one behind the flywheel doesnt seem to suck air. That one can be accessed without opening the motor if it does go bad.

TS 185 is a great bike, after all the abuse your's has had it is still keen to hit the road! As a former 185 owner myself, maybe adjust the slide needle for that overrun. Those bikes are fussy about their air supply, I would use one layer of 20mm filter foam from an auto shop rather than two layers of low density foam. Also check the Cush Drive, it's a very high wear item that can cause the rear tube to tear out the valve if it's worn.

It's together. A friend of mine was given a 1982 Yamaha mx 175. Told him either do a functional restore or sell it to me and not let it rot away. Gd stuff. 👍 👍 👍

Thanks! I have the carb apart now going through it thoroughly…there was some dirt that somehow made its way past the fuel filter so I’m hoping that was it!

That's a really nice job you're doing on that old bike. I absolutely love those old two strokes, I remember when I was about 14 I had a 1972 metallic lime green 90cc with the dual range gearbox. Later on when I was about 19 or 20 I had a 1972 Titan 500 same exact color with a dual range gearbox, I have never seen another one like that Titan. You know when you're a young fella you don't believe everything that is told to you and when the gentleman told me it was an experimental motor I kind of didn't believe him but maybe so I have not seen any others like it in all my 64 years. I sure wished I would have kept that! Now I have an 82 GSG 650 that's in really good shape with under 10,000 MI, I saw that year was a Giant eagle in the video and I'm wondering if you're in the same part of the country that I'm in?? I live in Huron Ohio, I have never been able to get the carburetors right on that bike as the guy sold it to me have given me receipts and maintenance on it and it appears that the carburetors have been rebuilt a lot of times and I'm just wondering if there is a limit on that kind of stuff??? Anyway my friend keep making videos you're doing a good job.

Thanks a lot! I love hearing other’s memories of these bikes too. I’m from Pittsburgh so we are close! That’s an old Pittsburgh Penguins poster that giant eagle must have sponsored. Good eye! A lot of times I find that if a carb has been tinkered with or rebuilt enough, there’s a good chance someone may have used different jets or even drilled out a main or pilot jet so there’s always that to keep in mind.

Good job on the engine. J.l.S. screws and screwdriver on those case bolts!(l always keep some allen bolts in handy sizes. Good to check the carb, might be fuel mixture screw adjmt or pilot jet. Made me laugh when fuel tap hit your repair chunk😁 What was rattling when you first started it?
@Garage2Trail
@Garage2Trail 4 ай бұрын
Thank you! I do have the JIS screwdrivers but had to use what I had with the impact screwdriver to get those out. I already got the carb out and to my surprise there was some junk in there that somehow got past my fuel filter. I’m also going to turn the air mixture in a half turn to see what happens. Not sure to be honest what that rattle was but it went away pretty quick. I had my hand on the motor to see if I could feel any excess vibration but did not. Hopefully it doesn’t return 😝

Have you ever ran into any issues with the oil pump not working, how would one check if it’s doing its job? My 79 is almost ride ready but I’m just iffy on the oil pump, previous owner said he always mixed fuel.

I know it’s hard to trust something so critical to engine life but on all of these old bikes, I have yet to not have one work. There is a proper way to measure the amount coming out per engine revolution but I always have just adjusted the slack on the cables per manuals and have never had a problem. I will also take a look to make sure some flows when I turn the engine over when disconnected. With that being said, I always premix a little for the tank just as a safety net.

Is it possible to change the orientation of the petcock lever instead of chopping it?
@Garage2Trail

I thought of that but the stopper is positioned in a way that would still make it hit the tank unfortunately. I’m just going to dremel the end off.
