Well, people often have a awkward look on their faces when I tell them that I still use cassettes...yeah, those hissy old tapes that sounded rubbish and always got eaten by their cheap car stereos. Then I tell them NO, cassettes are far better than you might remember and let them listen to some GOOD recordings on a GOOD tape deck. Many people don't remember cassettes as something that could sound good and you probably had the same bad memories when I came to vinyl. Welcome back! :) Really looking forward to your first vinyl release! I got my first record player when I was 3 years old (not kidding) and had record since then. I never left vinyl behind but I must admit when I bought my first CD burner for my PC in 1999 I quickly turned away from cassettes because I already had an Alpine CD changer in my car...but never abandoned cassettes completely or threw them away. I still have my Yamaha KX670 I bought new and tons of other tape decks. I got into 45s when I got my first jukebox and doing my own 50s / 60s radio show...several thousand records so far and still growing. When I buy *new* music, I usually go for vinyl. When I was a kid during the 1980s I always got new music on vinyl and recorded it on cassette when I played it the very first time, usually on Maxell UDII which my mother bought me in big multi packs. Later I moved on to TDK SA or SA-X...those were the days. I don't know why but somehow I love the look of the mid to late 80s Maxell and TDK cassettes best.

I got Becker tape player in my car and good sounding speakers and I record cassettes on my cassette deck. I adjusted the azimuth and speed and whenever I play a cassette and especially if they hear new music they would be like "Wow how do you record them??" I say "With a cassette deck!?" and they don't know what this is. Also they don't expect them to sound like I am playing a CD.

One of the reasons I like vinyl is because it tends to make me listen to a full album instead of skipping from song to song like I do with my digital library. But of course also the whole physical format thing plus the artwork and actually that it takes more effort to play a record, it's more fun.

Record playing was what we did growing up. It took time and money to build a system that sounds good. Unlike todays earbuds and phone... But you had to be active in the process to hear good music.......

I think that experience is the main thing people like about vinyl. Digital is music we listen to while doing something else, like working or driving or jogging or bicycling. Vinyl/cassette/CD is what we listen to when we listen to music where listening to the music the primary activity. There's also the dork factor of messing around, using different cartridges and needles, setting up the deck or vacuuming your album etc. Instead of listening through shitty earbuds through an even shittier op-amp in shitty cell phone, we listen in a good listening environment through a competent amplifier connected to OK speakers and where we are not distracted At least this is my experience (other than vacuuming my records, something I will never, ever do...that is just an eccentric activity too far for me). Presumably I'm not that special and am not the only person who enjoys this part.

@Jan Johansen Funny thing is, I do the opposite. I have yet to figure out a way of creating a digital copy of a YT audio track (that sounds good) and so I record them to cassette and listen to them while running or cycling, on a walkman. All of the downloaders for YT recompress the audio and it just sounds awful. The generational degradation of digital to analog is very slight, while the YT to mp3 is godawful.

If you want to be forced to listen to a whole album try 8-track tapes, these are continuous loop tapes that don't even rewind :-). And as far as effort goes, almost all tapes need to be repaired (repadded and respliced, and if you're unlucky the roller replaced) when you get them before you can even play them LOL.

My first cassette ever was a TDK C-60 that came with a little mono tape recorder I got in 1969 when I was a kid, that I used to record music off the radio (shout out to the Real Don Steele on 93 KHJ!). Anyway, I've been a TDK fan ever since, and in the 1980s, the SA-X 90s were my go-to tapes for recording my vinyl albums so I could play both sides in one go. Amazingly, you showed two of my favorite album from back in the day and somewhere I have both recorded on a SA-X 90 somewhere in my collection, and probably another copy on a D cassette that I carried in the car. (I hope my recordings were done after I upgraded to my Denon DR-M3 deck. Modest by your standards but the best cassette deck I've ever owned and it still works great.) I'm all for physical media. I'm a CD guy who still likes to play with vinyl. If music lovers win the "loudness war", then we can hopefully return to being able to enjoy new music without being fatigued. It's a shame because digital media (like CDs) offers extremely wide dynamic range, and modern engineering not only ignores that, but crushes the life out of it by just setting the levels to max like a middle-schooler would. I guess that's what happens when you let salespeople and accountants master your music for you.

another wonderful video. I have mix tapes I made from CDs that I wrote the date on the card, and finding them again in recent years has been a joy. Also finding receipts in CD cases for albums I bought (do the same with books). I know kids these days don't want piles of "junk" they have to lug from shared flat to shared flat because they can't afford housing, but I doubt many will maintain a streaming service history for 20+ years that they can look back on. I'm about 10 years older than you Tony. Our generation bought tapes to copy their mates vinyl, until they could afford to buy it. That's probably why I still prefer the sound from a good type 1 to a type 2. Back in the day , I simply could rarely afford chrome's. My favourite tape was the TDK AD in the early to mid 80's or the sony AHF/BHF. I have two rooms filled with vinyl...and an understanding wife

It’s amazing to me how refined separate directions of an analog sound reproduction became. Here you have a physical manifestation of sound waves read back by a diamond being recorded as a magnetic wave on a tape, both sound amazing, both are two totally different answers to the same question, both have their own separate flaws and benefits and both were successful in the same space at the same time.

Love all of your videos. My Father had a nice Pacard-Bell stereo console in the late 60s to the mid-70s. Then he replaced it with a 3-in-1 Crown stereo unit (Record player/Cassette/AM-FM radio unit). Me? I worked at Radio Shack in the early 80s and I bought my first system there, a Realistic STA-79 AM/FM 5-band eq. amplifier paired with a pair of Optimus T-120 3-way speakers, a Lab-430 direct-drive turntable a CD-2000 CD player, and a Realistic SCT-23 ( I paid about U.S. D $1410.00 back in 1985!). From that system, I still have the speakers and the turntable; I replaced the amp/cassette deck and CD player in 1997 with an all Optimus brand system (STAV-3770 5.1 surround amp an SCT-57 dual cassette deck with HXPro/Dolby B-C-S/CAC and a CD-7300 6 disc (cartridge style) CD player (about U.S. D $750), and I still use to this day.

I have a few of the USA SA-X90 that I bought in 1985 and I also have a few SA-X90 from later on, gloss black with a large window and gold logo and txt. they are still good after 35 years, a cd won't make it unless in controlled environment and don't play those LPs too often, copy them to tapes. My TDK tapes have survived many of the brutal stops that a Dragon can muster on a full side Fast Forward or Rewind, so for longevity, cassettes are still TOP. Thanks for making me look what I still have as cassettes go and maybe play a few later on. Oh! Keef Hartley Band, The Halfbreed album...

I have some original 60s Beatles albums that my parents bought and played over and over back then, but they still sound great on my Pro-Ject , Rega, Technics, or Audio Technica turntables... :-)

I recently bought some records and a cheap-ish player (250 sek + replaced cartridge 300 sek) that I repaired myself in order to re-experience playing a few of them when a kid. I’ve found that what I think makes it a different experience is that you have to be so much more deliberate when playing something, and you’re more likely to listen to the whole album instead of just jumping between “best of” by every artist on Spotify or etc instead. Also records that are good enough quality to listen to costs very little, unless you go hunting for those popular rarities, but finding something new (to you) old is a interesting and cheap weekend experience to do sometimes.

@Cassette Comeback. Thank you for your excellent YT content. Back in the day when I was asked about who made the best cassettes, I always said TDK. I have TDK tapes from the mid-1970's and they are still just fine. TDK were the tape of choice for me because they offered tape lengths/times to suit recording vinyl and CD e.g. C-46, C-80, usually AD spec. And since I did most of my listening in the car, it saved winding on un-recorded tape! Don't know if you have come across or reviewed TEAC cassettes. I had a couple in the 1980's and the tape "spools" had "rims" that were the full size of the wound tape inside the case. So through the clear tape shell - plus with the slots in the "spools" and the TEAC name printed on, it looked like a scaled down version of a reel-to-reel tape when playing. Can't remember what kind of tape, maybe Chrome or Metal maybe? Also, have you heard of a cassette brand called Dindy? Keep up the good work sir! Stay safe and well.

In the 90s, when I had a lttle band, we made our first 'album' on compact cassette. The studio guru played the first cut from reel to reel and the monitor boxes in the studio. After that, a short break, and then it should face the 'real test', as he said. He and band headed to the parking lot and there we sat, five guys in a VW Polo, listening to tape over the car's hifi stereo. It was awesome!

Such a beautiful tape, a must have tape for my collection when I can find them! My father had a 60 min and 90 min variant of the SA equivalent of this tape. The 90 min had the Top Gun Soundtrack on it, and the 60 min had an 80’s compilation on it called Smash Hits 88! Even if I had the SA version of this tape, I’d be happy! Watching this reminds me - I must replace the belts on my Sony TC-K611S deck and play my tapes! I used to have around 500 - having a decent tape deck given to me when I was a teenager (a Pioneer CT-F500), and there being an excellent record and CD department at my local library meant that I built up my music collection quickly. I used cassettes throughout my student years - I’d buy secondhand records (they were dirt cheap in the early 90s) and record them during the holidays to play on my Walkman during term time. And of course, cars all had tape decks in them back then. Later I started using cassettes to build up a collection of classical music - piano recitals mainly. I still remember the joy of opening a new cassette!

Remember having some form of study grant and instead of eating properly and using public transport I'd starve myself and ride a push-bike just so I could go out and fill carrier bags full of cheap vinyl. By cheap I don't just mean old and discarded, but brand new (including white label) from a guy who bough it in bulk and sold it at rock-bottom prices. The store didn't look mainstream like WH Smith or Woolworths, and a lot of people tended to avoided it as its location looked a little bit dodgy. The guy who ran it just wanted these records out the way, as most of his clients were into stuff like rap etc, and these were just an afterthought to him. Not to us. The vinyl itself, was mostly pristine: you could sense that "new" smell like on a new car the moment you took out the sleeve. In competition with each other, myself and my brother would ram carrier bags full records, then race home or to a relative's house the latter of which had a record good player and tape deck so we could record everything. Not a new Hi-Fi but one from the 70's that was built like a tank and had manual record levels. Sounded great. The folks would alll go out for the day, and there we were, me and my brother going crazy to the latest sounds; the bass from songs like that one you showed from the Cookie Crew, rocking the walls. Then the folks would come back and wonder what the hell was going on as they walked up the drive lol. Fortunately we kept most of the vinyl and stored it away. I could go back I wouldn't change anything it would be the ability to spend even more time and money buying records :)

I was in the same boat as a kid in the 1980's. I loved cassettes, records, MTV and even radio was great back then. I didn't realize until I was much older how good all these things could sound on quality equipment. My Soundesign all in one stereo was what I had and I was used to snaps, crackles and pops. I was just grateful for a new record or cassette when my parents got one for me. My mom was really pissed when I got 12 cassettes in the mail. She asked me how I got them. I told her I taped a penny to the card and mailed it in. I'm surprised Columbia House didn't take me to court when I reniged on my contract. I was around 12 at the time. Yes, most media sounds better on good equipment, but the most important thing of all is just enjoying the music. I can't imagine living in a world without it.

That's the thing with Vinyl. They get tracks without the brick wall. If CDs we're still mastered like they did in the 80s and early 90s then I think Vinyl wouldn't have taken off quite like it did, and people wouldn't be chasing SACDs and Vinyl as much as they do. Like I just bought some old Wang Chung CDs and they're quiet, but they have such a dynamic range it's just wonderful. You could tell they were pressed in the 80s because they say made in Japan. We didn't have any pressing factories in the US at the time, so all (if not most) CDs were being pressed in Japan. It's clear they cared about properly mastering these as they had a whole message on the back about how the album was made on analogue masters and they tried their best to preserve the sound, but due to the nature of CD, it might showcase flaws in the master tapes. You would never get that kind of message on CD cases these days! The only reason people are chasing such high resolution digital tracks is because CDs were ruined by the stupid loudness wars, killing all the dynamic range they had. It's sad... Because CDs really are just such a good format. But like you say, life has tape hiss, and that's okay, and I'm okay with it too.

Nicely told. . I returned to my young days custom to record anything from radio music to cassette just to have it in disposition ta any time for fun no matter that with radio talking inserts - at least it is not for sale nor gift to anybody. . Within even parts of it after few listenings I discover sometime very pulling music worth listening on and on . Bad side of new times is that people listen to something only once and go to next and next. With cassette we always check recording even once by curiosity, if no like it's so easy to rewrite with new stuff. . .

That is a great looking cassette, just good old school 1980's TDK, black shell, gold label. Even the SA (C90) is a fantastic cassette. I have a 1995 (SA90) with music recorded straight from CD, it is fantastic. I don't have a vinyl player but am considering one in the future. I have a few sealed Type I TDK's from this era (1985, 1986, 1987), mostly D's.

Hi, I watch for a while some of your movies, and really support getting back to physical media. Streaming, is not that what people want. Something special, you can keep in hand, record, tape - compose some tunes you want to give someone as a gift. That is all about - the feeling of handing over sth, that will last and survive the Internet outage :) I really hope, that manufactures like TDK, SONY MAXELL, will get back to produce tapes. As the records now. Lets support the artists in physical media, instead of having music in the "cloud". I get back to Pioneer CT-S777 and rediscover all over again after 20 years. Cheers!

Hi Tony, Congratulations, welcome to the black side 🙂 I'll give you a tip (no pun intended) - the Shibata stylus you have on your turntable will make brand new/pristine vinyl sound gorgeous ; the one caveat is that it is known to struggle slightly with vinyl that is slightly worn. You my find that your used discs may be prone to sibilant distortion and inner groove distortion. If you have the funds, I srongly recommend you *also* purchase the next stylus *down* from the VM95SH... the VM95ML. This has the microline tip (or Microlinear as Audio-Technica seem to call it nowadays). I'm not exaggerating why I say this tip is usually amazing with used vinyl; it really does cure distortion with slightly worn discs most of the time, giving you pristine audio. This makes crate digging for used vinyl a fair bit more enjoyable, and less prone to disappointments. I started using this style of tip in 2008. Truly the stuff of miracles.

I bought quite a bit of vinyl in the 80s and remember using BASF chrome tapes before going to SAs...generally I followed what mates were using. I (hope) might have some used SA-Xs in my parents loft. I never had a quality setup (a Pioneer all-in-one system) but remember being mad with myself if I messed up the start of a recording and had to (oh the horror) record on the first bit of the tape twice. Actually my car cassette players were generally of an 'Audioline' quality so didn't do the tapes justice anyway. Brothers in Arms was my first CD and remember being blown away by the quality.

The thing was, you never knew what was going to be on the shelves and sometimes it was genuine joy when something you'd been waiting for was finally released. Better than the deed, better than the memory...the anticipation. That's what made Friday's so awesome, Saturday was the day after. Now, I hardly ever go in to town. Hello Tony,, fascinating video, nice to see you're getting into vinyl, as you say there's nothing better than having a physical copy of your music, that you can actually hold & look at, not to mention some of the brilliant sleeve artwork too. I've still got all my vinyl collection from the early 80's to around 1990, mostly 12 inch singles, plus a few LPs & 7 inch singles, much of the collection is still in mint condition as alot were only played a few times, as I used to make mixtapes of a lot of them, mostly TDK AD or ARX & a few SA chrome too, these cassettes still sound as good as the day I recorded them, despite being played many times on various Walkmans & other portable ghetto blasters! I heard you say late generation SA tapes are going for £10 a time, I've still got a couple of wrapped ones, better hang on to them then! That new artist you were playing sounded good too. Brothers in Arms, brilliant album, both in musical & audio quality, I've got it on CD, it was one of the first CDs to be recorded entirely digitally, (DDD), Mine is a very early copy, It's recorded very loud compared to other CDs & seems to have a very wide dynamic range.

Hi Tony, 1. Welcome to vinyl (well, again)! It's a great format and great artwork. And indeed, something physical to treasure... 2. Who cares what the turntable is (well, preferably not the Crosley kind as they sound quite poor). As long as it's good enough for you... Cool thing: you can upgrade, set it up as well as possible, and it all makes a difference (and can be cheap to free as well!). 3. I still have records that are quiet. No cracks and pops. Daughter and Khruanbin (recent stuff), but also the Jean Michel Jarre record you showed from the 1980s still is dead quiet. People say you really need 180 gram records to sound good. But I have records that are 90 grams (really light and thin), and are quiet and sound great! It how good they pressing is I guess. 4. To my experience, the first time you play the record (modern one) is not really the best one. There seems to be some residue left on the record which you hear. Once you cleaned it and played it a bunch of times, that disappears, and the record sounds a lot better (and quieter). 5. Some are just garbage. Again a limited edition Daughter has so much noise, sometimes just one channel. It's horrible. Same with Enya's last LP (Dark Sky Island). Not brickwalled, just a very poor pressing. Which hurts if you just spent 35 euros on it to get it imported. London Grammar was fine (Truth is a beautiful thing), let's see what the new one is going to be like (once it arrives). 6. Cool! I'd love to see your music on vinyl too! 7. I think your test pressing has a spindle hole that is off-center. The center weight and cartridge seems to be swinging from side to side.. That won't help the quality. 8. It's ironic. You use a cassette deck and cassette that are both more expensive than the turntable and record (once it gets released) are as the source! So you might actually get an equally good recording on a normal SA :) (but the SA-X is great to see! And I wish I had some!). 9. I still hope that the youth will get into physical media as well. I'm really glad that I can still play me old records and CD's that I bought decades ago (well, from the late 1980s on).. 10. I use vinyl (LP's, 12 inches, and singles (7 inches), cassettes (on Nakamichi decks, thanks to you), CD's (old Philips CD player) and Minidiscs (better than you don't remember). I really really love physical media! 11. I just use Spotify to record new things onto cassette with. And if I like it enough (and can afford it), I'll buy the CD/LP/cassette.. I love that! 12. I hope your new business gets off to a great start! And I still love your channel... 13. You should have a better turntable, MC cartridge, audiophile great power and racks, silver cables etc. Otherwise, it just won't sound right ;)

For a while after I started my cassette collection I didn't even bother with vinyl, mainly due to the idea of me taking things gradually, but also that I didn't really feel like I would enjoy the medium. (Mainly storage and seeing the asking prices!) But then I decided to pick up a couple of those Maxell "Sampler" LPs from my local goodwill, and shortly after I scored a complete Audio-Technica TT for a good price at a different goodwill. At some point I do want to upgrade to a better deck (as it's a P-Mount) but it was definitely a good intro unit. Meanwhile the records multiplied. The best part about vinyl to me was finding new music, not newly recorded, but artists that I hadn't heard of or hadn't heard much of their other material. I haven't stopped listening to FM, but they play the same old stuff all the time. Just perusing a record shop's "discount" section one can find plenty of interesting music, some of which was only a demo record and the group never released anything else afterwards. And double thumbs up on the Jean-Michel Jarre album Tony!

@@CassetteComeback I did not see that, I'll have to look up a recording of it later. I will add that the beauty of the internet, YT, and the streaming services as well is most music that your not aware of and want to know how it sounds is just one search away... although I do still pull the trigger on something without even looking it up first. One LP that I bought that way recently was "Fool's Gold" (self-titled, 1976), a Illinois-based country rock group, mastered and managed by the same people that also formed the Eagles. (Glyn Johns, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh) Spellbound sounds almost like them, the group has one other album that I hope to get at some point "Mr. Lucky" (1977). I would have never heard their music or known they even existed had it not been for the "pick-one-for-free" bin at my local record shop if you make a purchase. I just grabbed it out of curiosity. While previewing music on the internet is handy, the action of doing it blindfolded and being pleasantly surprised after is something I've only had with a handful of other hobbies.

I love TDK. I say this as an avid cassette taper in the late seventies to late eighties. TDK SA was my personal reference. I felt it gave the most performance in fidelity and low noise together in one tape. That said the SA-X was a game changer. You could hardly overload it in any kind of ugly way. It was so crystalline in the upper octaves as long as your equipment was up to the talk. I did try metal in many nameplate iterations but I never felt anything (even Maxell's best) bested the SA-X blank cassette.

I love all sorts of stereo gear and that is a model I am unfamiliar with, and now I know why - we don't have that model in North America. Not only do we not get exactly that model name, we don't even get a variation of it, at least not as far as I can tell. It's really nice to have direct drive, and that looks like a very good version of the classic Technics SL1200 type turntable. I just got one of the reissued versions of it when my 45 year old Dual 701 direct drive turntable failed, and it's excellent. I know people will whine and wring their hands about it not being true audiophile grade, but they're I think they're wasting their time. If these turntables are good enough for studios to use to check masters and pressings, and that is exactly what they use for those purposes, then they are way more than good enough for everyday and critical playback.

glad to see your ventureing into the vinyl revolution and thats a dahm nice looking record deck you have brought their tony. i got my records out from the loft from my dj'ing day a couple of years back and got my self a deck from local charity shop with a decent cartridge and needle and as back in the 80's i still record them onto cassette and use them for when i go out with my walkman. for me the best version on the 1985 rel dire straights album is the track 2 long version money for nothing i really crank the volume for that one. i got introduced to john michel jarre when i had a saturday job at a butchers and have liked him ever since. music is in the "ear" of the listener so to say and i do really hate that dahm word a lot of people like to call them self "audiophile" to me its just like that stupid word "mancave". i think my last album i got witch was last year and that was change ....paradise on that 180g vinyl and to me it sounds great esp as it has certan mix's i was after on it . i did buy a album of e-bay a few months bac used called upfront 1 and as i do have a couple of them on cassette witch i brought back in the 80's and when it turned up i check it out and saw the state of the record and it as been used for scratching this is a problem with buying used vinyl you can not guarentee the history of it as we all now handle vinyl with the same respect as a tape never touch the playing face of it oh and yes i agree that sexy sa-x has got to be the best looking cassette in and out of the wraping
