Thanks for posting this wonderfull memorie. I played in the massed band "40 years NATO". One of the twenty young musicians from Holland. We had such a great time there.

This is definitely 1989. The opening music is 'Songs of the Early Airmen', arranged by Wing Commander Barrie Hingley, especially for that year's Royal Tournament. In 1986, the Massed Bands played film music: Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark & Star Wars.

We got in trouble for bulling up the 18 inch bayonets, as they were from a props company and needed to be ‘used’ for their films. Still nostalgic.

Unfortunately I think this is the 1989 show, NOT the 86. I just listened again to the CD and it is labeled for 1989. Still, nice to see this vintage year of the iconic show. Just thought you should know. Thanks again.

By the way Mally this was'nt the program I commented on about the Smellies. The Smellie carriers wore blue boiler suits to match the blue of the RAF colour guard

By the way they also wore Battle Bowlers also the Smellies shown here are No4 mk1's they were not around in 1916 they were issued to the British Army in 1941 or there about. In 1916 they would of used No1 mk3 in which the barrel and forestock ended Bluntly together, these were the original SMELLIES

+Mally Leivers He's talking about the guns the guys dressed as the 1916 Royal Flying Corps were carrying. The rifles issued during that time were called SMLEs ("short magazine Lee-Enfield" rifles, or "smellies").

Evidently your not old enough to know what a Smellie is ask any who fought in the 2 world wars
